Uhura had calmed down a lot since the night she spent with Spock. Now she just felt bad about it and was convinced Spock wouldn't want anything to do with her anymore. She needed reinforcements... female reinforcements. Gaila was basically Uhura's only friend. Not exactly the person she would go to for advice on boys, but she was a good shoulder to cry on so she showed up at Gaila's apartment and knocked on the door, a gallon of vanilla ice cream in hand.
Gaila's apartment also happened to be Scotty's little studio above the shop now, and she answered the door with bags under her eyes, and wearing a robe that was barely sinched shut. She rubbed at her eyes, "Nyota? Are you okay? Is that vanilla? You're not okay. Oh my god that's horrible come in, I need to get dressed. Scotty's really busy with the spaceship, just come upstairs. Just ignore the missile shell and the submarine!" She let her in and rushed upstairs! Now she was glad Scotty had flushed those pills, she didn't need Uhura to find out she'd been taking E. Although maybe that might cheer her up.
Truely, there was an empty missile shell and a submarine, as well as numerous other gizmos, engines, gadgets and machines in the process of being meticulously put together. To form a greater whole.
Uhura didn't even have a chance to get a word in edgewise before Gaila disappeared upstairs to get dressed. Typical. Uhura made herself at home and went rooting around in the kitchen for some spoons as she waited for Gaila. When she reappeared Uhura frowned. "Scotty's working on that space ship too?" It only upset her more, but the fight was gone now.
Gaila reappered properly attired. She nodded her head, and peered downstairs, then back at Uhura again, "Yeah! He's got this new engine design that's cheap and efficient. They're missing some calculations and should probably look into communications equipment but we'll cross that hurdle when we get to it." She looked proud, "I provided some of the computer programming! I just wish there was more to do. I'm getting bored working on my strategy game." She got down some bowls, the better to share the ice-cream with, "But that's not important. Whats important is you have vanilla ice cream so there's a serious crisis here."
"Why didn't anyone tell me you guys were working on a spaceship?" Uhura asked as she opened the ice cream and stuck a spoon in. She didn't really care about bowls at that moment. "That's kind of big news and I wasn't invited," that last bit was said with an uncharacteristic pout. One that only Gaila was ever allowed to see and very rarely at that.
Gaila chewed on her lip, "I'm sorry. I didn't think you'd be interested. Its a little crazy." Just a little. A smidge.
"A little?" Uhura scoffed. "It's ridiciulous! You're all wasting your time and now Kirk is pulling Spock into the whole thing and here I thought Spock was smarter than that. I guess I was wrong." Uhura put the spoon of ice cream in her mouth and let it melt in her mouth.
"We can do it! There's even a prize if we pull off a trip to the moon, first!" Gaila jabbed at the ice cream with her spoon, "Is that why you're mad? Kirk talked Spock into it?"
"Do you even hear yourself? I believe in the dreams as much as anyone, but a spaceship? It's not possible. We don't have the technology." She swallowed another bite of ice cream and shrugged. "I think I sort of messed things up with Spock last night. It was awful."
Gaila shook her head, "Ever hear of SpaceX? Its a company that makes space ships. They won like ten million bucks in a contest to make a working, privately owned space ship like...8 years ago. I think they're getting ready to visit the space station. Its not impossible. Just really difficult with limited resources."
Trying to change tacks back to Spock and keep it there, She added, "Lets worry about the space crap later. Tell me what happened." Because hello. Vanilla ice-cream!
Uhura opened her mouth to retort about the spaceship building, but decided it wasn't worth it. They had obviously all made their minds up about it. Although she made a mental note to ask about where all the money for this crap was coming from when they were done with the ice cream.
"Well... Spock wanted to get together for lunch to talk about the dreams some more, but I managed to upgrade it to dinner because I'm sly." She smiled for a moment. "There's this little Koren BBQ place I like that's right by the coffee shop we first met at so I thought it would be easy for him to get to. I guess he didn't really know what Korean BBQ is because as soon as we get there he informs me that he's a vegetarian." Another bite of ice cream.
She grinned at Uhura, "You go girl! That is sly!" Uhura was alwasy more clever and picky when it came to dating. That had its downsides but it also had its upsides! She laughs, "He didn't tell you before? What did you do?"
"I apologized and said we could leave, but he insisted he just have fish. I promised I would keep my meat on my side of the grill." That was an important bit of information because she used it later. She did feel really bad about that. "We started talking about the dreams. I told him about mine with Kirk, he told me about his as a child. And then the spaceship came up. He mentioned he was going to help Kirk with it, that he thought it would be good for him. Give Kirk some sense of self. I don't know why, well I do, but it pissed me off. I didn't like the idea of Spock spending so much time with someone I loathe, which meant less time for me. I didn't have any right to get angry. We're not even dating, but I think that was the problem. He won't ask me out, but he'll have a bromance with Kirk? I couldn't stand the thought. I actually got so angry when the meat showed up I took over the entire grill." She said that last part a bit guiltily.
"You're seriously dreaming about Kirk too?" Gaila winced. That couldn't sit well with Uhura at all. She winced again, "I'm not sure I'd call it a bromance, you know? I mean how well do they know each other? Its not like they're getting naked with each other. You need to stand your ground, girl! Maybe you need to ask him out?"
Wait. "You took over the entire grill!?" Like that was some how a horrible, horrible thing.
"Yes, I know," Uhura replied, her voice full of guilt. "It was horrible. I think he hates me now. I've ruined everything." More ice cream. All of the ice cream. "I don't think I can ask him out now. Not after last night. I wouldn't blame him if he never wanted to see me again."
"Make him call you," Gaila replied, defiantly. "You gotta hold out, if you give in first its like..." she waved a hand, "Its like confirming every clingy stereotype there is, and Nyota Uhura is not clingy. Leave it to me, I'll work him." That there was her trademark 'theres gonna be trouble' grin.
"I'm so not that type!" Uhura replied, maybe a little defiantly. She didn't want anyone thinking she was. "He just needs to ask me out already!" She paused to take another bite of ice cream and then shook her head. "Ooooh no. No, you won't get in the middle of this. You'll only make it worse."
"I will not make it worse! I'll set up a date with him, right? See if I can figure out his feelings about you. It'll be easy!"
"No, Gaila. Please don't do that. It will ony make things worse. Really. I can handle it. I just needed someone to eat ice cream with."
She pouted, puffing out her lower lip, though she knew it would be of no avail, "Okay, okay, I promise I won't do that. I'm just concerned! You've really got the hots for this guy. I mean I don't blame you, rwar, but..." She patted Uhura's hand.
"I really like him," Uhura admitted, which was probably the first she'd said anything of the sort out loud. "I just hope I didn't completely ruin everything."
"...maybe if he doesn't call you in a week, txt him? That won't seem too cling."
clingy^
"If he doesn't call me in a week then he's not interested in making anything work," she said flatly.
"Or he's interested but confused because of your reaction," She pointed out. "Three days?"
"Fine. Three days." And those three days were going to suck.
Gaila made a mental note to bring Uhura seveal more cartons of ice cream. This was an emergency!
