There had been a lot of exciting parts to taking the contract job at the Dryden Flight Research Center – primarily the projects he got to work on.

But he’d been stuck in the middle of a desert, among strangers. His coworkers had been alright, he’d learned a lot from them and even had a good time getting to know most of them.

But they weren’t his friends from back in the OC. He’d kept up with his friends from back home, but texts and shared TikTok videos just weren’t the same as being able to see and hang out with your friends in person.

Lily was the first person he texted when he got back into town.

And now he was sitting on the pier in ‘their spot’ with two bags of churros, waiting for her to arrive. He hadn’t been this excited in a long time (okay, not since the last time he got to test the X-48B Blended Wing Body aircraft he’d been helping perfect out there in the middle of the desert – he was a nerd after all). But he’d not been excited to see a person in a long time.

Lily had missed Anakin when he'd left the area for work, texting and TikTok videos just weren't the same as getting to see him. Plus he was the only one of her friends who hadn't gotten to meet Bella yet - even though she had sent him a lot of pictures of her and the puppies before they'd found their new homes and families.

She hooked Bella's leash onto her harness before opening the door and calling the dog out of the car with her to walk to the familiar form at the end of the pier. "Best behavior Bella. Or no treats." She said with a small smile as she reached him. "Sit nicely." She told her, sitting down by Anakin and leaning her head on his shoulder as she slid one arm around him in a loose hug.

	Lily's arm settled around him, and Anakin almost jumped, but for a good reason. "Oh no, I did this wrong." Not that he didn't appreciate a hug from Lily. But the dramatics of the situation called for more. He stood up, holding a hand out for Lily, so they had could give her a proper, strong, full on hug. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

	Lily let Anakin pull her to her feet, a smile playing at the corners of her mouth as he did so. She wrapped her arms around him, hugging him tight as she rested her forehead against his shoulder. "I missed you you know." She said quietly. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Anakin hugged Lily back with the same enthusiasm.

"I've missed you, too." He'd had nothing but space nerds for a year for company. Nice when you wanted to talk about theoretical space travel. Not so much when you wanted variety in conversation or churros on the pier.

"Okay," he said pulling back, "introduce me to your new, cutest friend. I've been dying to meet her for ages."

Lily smiled as she stepped back slightly, turning her head towards Bella and giving a soft click to get the dogs attention. "Bella. Up. Come meet Anakin." She said, grinning as the long haired dog stood up and walked over to them, standing up on her hind legs to offer her head for pets to the man.

"She's made a lot of progress since the puppies got rehomed. When she first came to live with me she wouldn't go near anyone new. I swear it took an hour for her to even sit in the same room with me after Amycus left."

	"Aww-aw," how could Anakin not be touched by a cute little dog walking on her hind legs? Bella was such an endearing dog already. "Did you teach her this trick?" he asked as he squatted down and held out a hand for Bella to sniff. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

"I didn't. I think Amycus did? Maybe not directly but I've seen Chip do it at times and Bella spends a lot of time with them. More when he first rescued her. But if she hadn't already stolen my heart seeing her do that for the first time would have." Lily said, reaching down with one hand to stroke Bella's head. "Good girl. That's my good girl." She murmured as Bella leaned into butt her head against Anakin's hand.
