Who: Billy Kaplan What: A text message induced minor meltdown When: After this text. Rating: Low Status: Complete / Narrative
Billy stared at his phone in abject horror at the text message he’d just sent to Teddy, eyes wide and barely breathing as he realised what he’d typed, how it had just come out of him so easily that telling Teddy he loved him was like breathing even though they’d never said those words to each other before. Not here, in Orange County. In the dreams, though, they’d exchanged those words countless times, whispered and shouted, giggled and pressed into skin. The typing bubble kept coming up and he watched the three dots start then stop then start again and wondered if this was it, if this was where he’d finally crossed that line of too far and he’d lost what was, arguably, the best thing in his life.
He flicked away from the message, not wanting to watch Teddy type - half convinced this was the end and that Teddy was trying to tell him nicely that he’d taken it a step too far - and looked mournfully at Wanda’s last text message thread, and at Blossom’s. He wondered if they would reply to him, he hadn’t really spoken to them much since they’d both left OC behind. And he knew it wasn’t because of him, and they hadn’t abandoned him, but abandonment issues were a bitch to deal with and Billy wasn’t on the best or most solid footing when it came to his mental health at the best of times.
He came back into the room to find himself hovering slightly, static electricity licking the air around him like it was trying to comfort him a little and he found himself reaching out, fingers outstretched as he summoned the energy towards him and curled it around himself, watching as it became visible, blue sparks and static crackling over his arm like a pet snake. His powers, he knew, reacted to his emotions. He’d seen that in the dreams, he’d experienced it in real life. He thought back to when those demon things were around, how he’d seen Teddy die and his powers had reacted accordingly. How he’d gone off like a nuclear bomb. How Wanda and Blossom had curled close to him in the days after and told him that even though he was dangerous they didn’t mind, they weren’t afraid of him.
Would Teddy be afraid of him if he knew that?
Would the other people in OC be afraid of him? How many people had powers, he wondered, couldn’t help himself from trying to think about the powers that others had, how many were like his, how different some of them were. Kara was here, with powers like Supergirl, and her cousin Clark - who was obviously Superman - meant godlike abilities that would probably manifest at some point provided he was a dreamer like the rest of them. How long before their powers were discovered by people outside of OC? What would happen then? He’d only heard of sentinels before in his dreams, but the idea that anything like that might exist here, or might get created here was terrifying
He chewed the inside of his lip and stared at his phone again, flicking back to his text message with Teddy. The bubbles had stopped.
Then the string of messages came through and Billy’s chest loosened immediately. He could worry about Orange County being discovered another day. For now, he was just happy he still had a boyfriend.
