May & Clara
Who: May Parker & Clara Oswald
What: Run in
When: Wednesday afternoon
Where: Bookstore
Warnings: Nah
Status: Threading

May had a rough day at work so she decided to stop by the bookstore. She loved the mixed smells of coffee and new books, even if she only window shopped. Today, however, she had her laptop on her too. She was serious about changing careers and needed to do some research about becoming an editor.

She found some books she thought might help, purchased them, and plopped at a table with a coffee in hand.

Clara was bored. Okay, so that happened more often than not these days. She did random travel with people, both time and location. She had her diner for random walk ins. There were the investigations she sometimes did - though sadly nothing had caught her attention as of late. And well... when one didn't actually need to eat or sleep? Time could move a lot faster but also a lot slower.

And that led to boredom.

No wonder the Doctor was the way he was in her Dreams.

Not like she hadn't been dealing with that for years already.

And it didn't matter. Because when she got bored, there were always books. And books didn't care if you didn't sleep, they weren't on a time schedule. And it was very easy to get lost in a bookstore. Or end up with a stack of books that was definitely towering over her in her arms. It was a dance of sorts to not run into anyone or fall. But one she had mostly mastered.

May sipped her coffee and flipped through her book, stopping every now and then to make a note. However, she glanced up when she noticed someone with a towering stack of books in their arms. She couldn't help laughing. "Been in that situation before!" She said as she patted her table. "Want to regroup here?"

Times like this, Clara really missed Bucky. He could help with the books - after he stopped laughing because he had lost her in the bookstore. And that was a thought she was definitely locking away. The two had been in different places and so things had ended and she was okay with that. It had been nearly a year already, but the thoughts still happened every now and then.

Either way, Clara managed not to trip when she heard a voice addressing her. A familiar one at that. So poking her head out from behind her stack of books, the brunette grinned some.

"May, hello!"

Well, might as well take a break. So with only the maneuvering of someone who had done this a number of times, Clara changed direction and managed to get to the table without dropping her books, placing them down before sitting.

"How are you doing?"

May's face broke into a grin and she stood up as she recognized Clara. "Oh, hi! Here, let me help..." However, before she could so much as reach out a hand, Clara expertly maneuvered her books onto the table. "You deserve a medal for that," she teased. She sat back down and tucked her hair behind her ears. "Hard day," she admitted. "Trying to forget it with..." She gestured around. "Nerd, I know." She laughed at herself. "What about you? How is it going?"

"What can I say, a lot of practice." Folding her hair behind her ear, Clara nodded some at the comment. "Nothing wrong with that. We all have our own ways of dealing with hard days." Clara liked to fly in space and hang out of the TARDIS. Because that was healthy. But it wasn't like she could die, so... did it really matter? "I'm good at listening if you want to talk about it."

As for her?

"It's going well. Finished all of my books so clearly it was time to stock up again."

"Clearly," May agreed. Her book collection meant the world to her, which was why she carted it clear across country when she moved. She glanced at the titles she could make out in the pile. "Looks interesting," she added.

She gestured to her own books about editing and resume building then. "Well, here is a hint. I'm trying to find a new job."

It was also the benefit of the TARDIS. There was a lot more space for books than she'd have at the flat she'd been in when she first moved to California. And now that she was on her own again? Well, she had long since let that place go.

Noticing the books, Clara nodded.

"Nothing wrong with that. It's never too late to change careers, especially if it's something you're really interested in."

May chuckled. "It's like you read my mind." She shook her head. "I feel so behind the curve." She waived a hand dismissively. "Enough about me though! Tell me. How are you? What is happening in your life?"

Clara's change of career had been more related to the Dreams and feeling grounded and stuck but she figured in a way, even without the caught between one heartbeat and the last and dreaming of traveling time and space, that it could be said about anyone who wanted to change career. that usually people changed careers when they needed to or the urge was there. Why let something as insignificant as the concept of the right time get in the way of that?

"I mean, things are always changing and evolving, so that makes sense. It's just the nature of progress."

As for her? The brunette just shrugged at the question.

"I'm good. And nothing really."

May shot the other woman a grateful look. "Thanks," she said. "Sometimes it feels like life just sort of chose things for me." Not that she regretted her life. She loved marrying Ben and raising Peter. Her career had just taken a back seat; she worked because she needed to pay bills, but she wanted something more now.

"Nothing?" She repeated. "We need to get you out then. Call Peggy and have a girls night."

"Fairly common, I think. We get caught up in the day to day and find ourselves in a life we might not have had initially planned out. Nothing wrong with that, it's life. But it also means that it's never actually too late to make a change either."

She just had both the essentially immortal thing going on and the fact that she never knew when she might dream once more of going to Trap Street and that being it. It was an interesting dichotomy.

"I could be persuaded."

"You are a smart one," May teased. "I'll call Peggy and we'll plan something. Do you like dancing?"

"I usually am." At which Clara just grinned. After all, why should she deny that she was smart? "And yeah, dancing's always fun."

She didn't go often - at least to current club dancing - but she enjoyed it all the same. Even when she wasn't trying to ignore dream related trauma and feeling split apart. Either way, she wasn't going to turn down something different to do.

May admired Clara's confidence. Own it, right? She grinned too and said, "I'll text Peggy later. This will be fun. I'm really glad we ran into each other, Clara."

Life was too short not to be confident with your strengths and to try and downplay them in some misguided belief of 'humility' that really just didn't want people to be sure of themselves. Nodding, Clara brushed her hair out of her face, "It will be. So am I. And good luck with the career change. It can seem daunting but if it's something you enjoy? It's definitely worth it."

"Thanks," May replied. She hoped it all worked out. Clara was right. It was daunting! However, with Peter at college, May had loads more time on her hands to figure it all out. "And let me know how those books turn out. I am always looking for recommendations."

"Anytime." Clara had done it herself and she had all the faith that May would do just fine at the transition herself. Getting up, she picked up her books and nodded, "I'll definitely do that. Enjoy the rest of your day."

And time to go back to the dance of maneuvering her books to checkout without dropping them. But Clara had plenty of practice with that.
