Who: Elsa and Rapunzel
Where: Elsa's then an animal shelter
When: Recently
What: Rapunzel wants to adopt a cat (or two...)
Status: Complete
Rating: PG-13

Rapunzel was excited to surprise Elsa with a visit to the animal shelter. She had decided it was time to get a warm blooded animal for her place and she wanted Elsa to help her figure out. She was thinking she would most likely go with a cat, but she wasn’t completely opposed to a dog. She sent the texts to Elsa to tease the date, making sure not to text and drive, and then arrived at her girlfriend’s place. She grabbed her purse and made her way to Elsa’s, knocking playfully, and waiting for Elsa to answer.

The only thing Elsa knew for certain was that there was some kind of surprise and that Rapunzel was really excited about it. It was enough to make Elsa feel excited and boy did she want some excitement right now.

She was in the middle of getting ready when the knock came, and she rushed to the door, pulling it open and forgetting that she didn’t have a shirt on, “Hi!”

Only then she remembered she didn’t have a shirt on, turned around, nearly tripped over HER cat, and rushed into her bedroom to put a shirt on.

At least she’d answered the door for her girlfriend that way and not a stranger, but that didn’t make her any less mortified.

“I’m a disaster,” she told her rats, before stepping back out, this time decent. “I meant to do that.”

Rapunzel let out a low wolf whistle when Elsa came to the door without a top on. Well, that was certainly a sight to see and thank god they were spending time naked together or else it would be very awkward. “You don’t have to put on a shirt yet,” Rapunzel called out to her as she dashed away to her bedroom and Rapunzel wandered inside, shutting the door behind her.

“You are a little bit of a disaster, but I like it,” Rapunzel replied with an easy smile as she pulled Elsa towards her and leaned up to give her a kiss, “It was definitely my favorite way to be greeted. I didn’t build in time to grope you into the schedule though, so going to have to remember to do that in the future.”

“I’d kiss you but then we’ll never leave,” Elsa teased, though she did lean in and kiss Rapunzel’s cheek. Kissing her was probably her favorite thing, maybe even more than sex. Well, almost. “You look nice, sweetheart. So where are you dragging me to?”

“While you’re correct on that part I can still pout a little,” Rapunzel replied with a small pout after the kiss on her cheek. Elsa was right though, they weren’t very good at restraining themselves with things like that, “Thank you and I also can’t tell you because it’s a surprise!”

Rapunzel gave some jazz hands before grabbing Elsa’s hand with a playful grin, “Are you ready to head out? I promise you will like this surprise. It’ll be a lot of fun.” She knew that Elsa would really enjoy going to play with animals and hopefully they found one that Rapunzel could fall in love with.

Pouting only made leaving harder, so Elsa held her tongue from more comments that might make it harder for them to get anywhere.

Honestly this sort of thing gave her such a thrill. A stupid, silly little thrill considering all the other things going in on the world but this thing with Rapunzel was theirs and theirs alone. “I love you,” she said, when Rapunzel grabbed her hand, and squeezed it back as she let her girlfriend pull her along, “Did I say that yet?”

She wondered at Rapunzel’s plan but decided to let her show rather than tell.

Probably wise to not bring that up or else they would get side tracked. “Not today,” Rapunzel pointed out with a small smile as they walked toward her car, pausing so Elsa could lock up, “I love you too.” It had taken her a bit longer to say the words because she hadn’t wanted to rush into anything, but she did love Elsa. She did want to take things slow because it hadn’t even 6 months yet, but their time together had been great so far.

They got into the car and Rapunzel started up the car and headed to their destination, “Okay, so did you want to do any guesses or just going to be surprised?” She had made sure to set the GPS before Elsa got in so she didn’t know the destination.

Elsa hadn’t meant to move so fast, if anything she’d much preferred to slow down. And they had, sort of. And then they hadn’t. Life was too short to get hung up on something especially when it might cost you something good. At least that was what she told herself.

It seemed like Elsa didn’t fall in love often, but when she did she fell hard. Which was somewhat scary if she was at all honest with herself.

“Why don’t you surprise me?” She grinned, watching Rapunzel as they drove, “I like surprises.”

“That’s a good thing,” Rapunzel relaxed as she drove, reaching to take Elsa’s hand with her own for a moment and give it a squeeze, “Alright, so catch me up on what you’ve been up to lately. How are things with Anna?” She wanted to ask if Elsa was still running off to Ahtohallan but she was also a little nervous about that in general and didn’t want her to end up getting hurt with no one else able to help her.

“A lot better.” Elsa smiled. The subject of Anna always did do that for her. Now that she had her again, she didn’t want to lose her. It was a balance she was trying to strike between keeping her close and giving her space.

She squeezed Rapunzel’s hand back, enjoying the warmth and how the woman was always so good at heating her up. “Not perfect. I think she’s afraid I’ll ghost her again. But better. Otherwise I’ve been working on a project, and keeping tabs on Ahtohallan.”

The latter actually made her feel strangely unfulfilled, like she was missing some important aspect but didn’t have the words for it. “It’s kind of strange. It’s like it knows it doesn’t belong.”

“What kind of project,” Rapunzel inquired and then raised one eyebrow at Elsa’s comment about Ahtohallan knowing that it doesn’t belong, “Wait, what do you mean knows it doesn’t belong? I mean it’s not stuck here forever, right? Is it trying to morph into something else?” Rapunzel had no experience with magical places like that and Ahtohallan seemed extremely confusing.

Elsa had been keeping it in since she’d gotten the go ahead for it, but now she burst into a smile, “An Aquarium! I get to design an entire aquarium! All the exhibits and the places people will be walking through, or under. Like I’m planning the shark tank to have a tunnel through it. I’ll be working with a marine biologist to make sure the fish are all in a big enough environment!”

She sobered just slightly, and added, “I can’t… put into words. It’s like a feeling. It was never meant to be this far south, for one thing, and it doesn’t belong in our world”

“What?! You are designing an aquarium? That is so cool, Elsa! A shark tank with a tunnel is definitely one of the best things an aquarium can have. I am so excited for you,” Rapunzel was doing her best to keep her eyes on the road, but she did glance over at Elsa a couple times with a very excited expression. That was such a great opportunity and she couldn’t wait for this aquarium to be completed.

“Ahhh, that makes sense. Hopefully you’re able to get everything sorted with that soon so nothing bad happens,” Rapunzel took a couple more turns before they arrived at the building that declared it as an animal shelter. She parked the car and turned to look at Elsa, “Wanna help me pick out a pet?”

Elsa liked the idea of people walking with sharks, as it were, and she was really happy that Rapunzel seemed to be excited about the idea too. It made her want to walk on air, or at least dance around. She even wriggled in her seat a little bit.

“Yes, I think it will…” Elsa trailed off when they parked, looking at the shelter and raising her eyebrows before she turned her gaze to her girlfriend. “You want me to help you pick out a pet?”

It was super serious and she was super touched. “I’d love to!”

“Excellent! I was thinking of a cat,” Rapunzel did like dogs, but she wasn’t ready for the responsibility of taking it out for walks because she was leading a fairly busy life especially with dating Elsa. She turned off the car, unbuckled her seat belt, and leaned over to give her a kiss on the cheek, “Alright, let’s go in.”

She got out of the car and went around the front, waiting for Elsa, and held her hand out to her so they could walk in together. She was starting to get excited at the idea of hanging out with a bunch of cats and hopefully one of them would be the one.

"I happen to be an expert in cats," Elsa replied, grinning. "We're a lot alike, takes a bit of time to get us to open up." Though she supposed with Rapunzel that had happened rather quickly. Did that make Rapunzel the Elsa Whisperer? She'd probably do well with a cat, and the thought of Rapunzel cuddling and cooing at a cat made Elsa's grin wider.

She took her hand gladly, proud to show off that they were together (and willing to freeze anyone who said anything). "Knowing you we might end up going home with a whole litter. I'm going to have to be the adult I think."

The comment about being a lot like a cat made Rapunzel chuckle and she shook her head, “Well, you can use your cat whisperer skills to help me find the right one. I just want to make sure that whatever cat ends up at my place also likes you and knows you.” It was probably a wise decision since Elsa did spend time at her place that everyone got along.

“Wow, that’s so mean but so true,” Rapuznel admitted with a grin as they stepped into the shelter, “I will do my best to only get one, maybe two, but no more than that.” She wasn’t opposed to having a pair so they would play together, but she didn’t need more critters running around. She walked up to the front desk and explained she was hoping to look at cats today and then they were escorted back to the cat area.

This was going to be so much fun. Amazing, even! Elsa followed alongside her girlfriend, though she moved back a little with the intent of Rapunzel getting a good view at all the animals without her being in the way. There were so many animals and she was glad it was just the two of them because if Anna were here they’d be in serious trouble.

As it was, she wasn’t entire sure she could be the adult here. Everything was just too cute. From the kittens piling together to a stray grey tabby rubbing against the bars and plaintively mewing at them.

“There are so many…”

The cat colony was a lot more than she thought it would be and she couldn’t believe how many cats there were in that moment. Rapunzel’s eyes went wide as she took them all in and then turned to Elsa with an amused smile on her face, “They are so damn cute. Okay, maybe I should just take a hoard home and call it good, right?”

She squeezed Elsa’s hand before reaching out to open the door into the room so they could go inside and get covered in cats. She made some cooing noises as she made her way into the middle of the room and sat down to let cats come over to her. It seemed like the best idea for contact so they wouldn’t get scared by her.

"You're not taking a hoard home," Elsa said, even though she sounded like she wanted to take every last kitten home herself. But she had promised to be the reasonable one, and reasonable was one of the things she was good at (at least when she wasn't being good at it).

She sat down across from Rapunzel, smiling at the cuteness of the situation. Her face softened as she did so, and she was... she was just the luckiest person alive, wasn't she? This blazing ball of sunshine was her girlfriend, the warmth to her cold, a reflection of the warmth within her own heart.

Two in particular, one white and one black, both with mismatched eyes, kept trying to get into her lap. The black one tried to climb up her shirt and stick his head down the front.

"That one takes after me," Elsa joked.

Rapunzel let out a laugh at the one trying its best to get into Elsa’s shirt, “Oh, it definitely does. Trying to get fresh on the first date.” Rapunzel held her hand out for a little orange tabby to come over and sniff before it crawled into her lap and started nibbling on the hem of her shirt.

Another tortoise shell colored one came in and did a running jump from a cat tree and jumped onto her shoulder. She was surprised and made a noise of shock as she reached up to try and grab the kitten so it wouldn’t hurt itself, “Wow, this one is a daredevil like you.”

Oh god, Elsa was going to lose it at how adorable this was. She grinned at Rapunzel as she bathed in Kittens, which quite frankly was a little bit of heaven. "Oh! Careful!"

She was talking to both of them, considering how sharp kitten claws could be. "That one's got an adventurous streak. I’m not sure which of us is more the daredevil though." Elsa sighed wistfully, "Shoulder cats are the best kind of cats. But you might end up a pincushion for the rest of your life."

Was that a worthwhile tradeoff?

Elsa scooted a little closer to Rapunzel, wanting to be as close to her as she could get.

“I mean, you can teach them to put up with getting their nails trimmed, right?” as long as you started them early then Rapunzel didn’t see it becoming a major issue. May be good to see if any of them had deep aversions to having their paws touched.

When Elsa moved closer she reached over and took her hand and gave it a squeeze, “Glad you came along. There’s just so many to handle by myself.” She still wasn’t quite sure which one she wanted to go with, but she was eyeing the fluffy one that had just fallen asleep on his back in her lap. She reached a hand down to give its belly a little tickle.

“I think so,” Elsa said. Her own cat wasn’t much of a problem except when she got super super playful. Yet she couldn’t see Rapunzel with any cat that wasn’t at least a little excitable. Rapunzel deserved a shoulder cat at the very least, riding for adventure in golden locks.

“Careful,” Elsa whispered cheekily. “That’s usually a trap.”

Then the kitten stretched and yawned the Big Yawn, just before grabbing Rapunzel’s hand with his paws and trying to groom her fingers.

Elsa’s comment about it being a trap made Rapunzel chuckle and she was willing to take the chance. That fuzzy belly was calling her name. She giggled when he grabbed her hand and started to lick her fingers before giving some love nibbles. She pulled her hand away after a moment since baby kitten teeth were as sharp as pins sometimes.

“Definitely a trap. Hmm… they’re all just so sweet. It’s hard to decide on one,” Rapunzel frowned a little before another cat crawled up her arm and came to rest on her shoulder. There were still even more running around their bodies wanting all the love and attention they had to give, “How do we decide on just one?”

“Well,” Elsa pretended to put thought into it even though she knew very well what exactly the best plan would be. At least she hoped it was a good plan.

“Why don’t I free you of these kittens, you go over there, and we’ll see which ones love you more than me when you psspssspssp at them.”

“Wow, that’s really expecting a lot from these kittens,” Rapunzel commented with an amused smile on her face, but at least it was a good idea. If the kitten wanted to spend more time with Rapunzel than Elsa that boded well since the kitten would be stuck at her house, “Alright, let’s give this a try.”

She got up with Elsa’s help moving kittens and then wandered over to the other side of the room. She knelt down and started making noises trying to get the kittens to come over and stuck out her fingers and wiggled them to entice pets. It took a little bit before the kittens noticed what was going on, but a couple did finally start to wander closer.

Giggling a little to herself, Elsa positioned a little ways away, cooing and wriggling her fingers to try to entice some of the kittens towards her. While one in particularly zeroed in on her (which might be a problem), most of the others either ignored them both, or gravitated towards Rapunzel.

The power of the Disney Princess at work! Not even a Queen or a Fifth Spirit could compare.

With one snow white kitten in her lap, Elsa watched as several kittens got distracted and played with each other.

“Looks like you’ve got your own companion,” Rapunzel called out with a laugh at Elsa with a kitten in her lap. A snow white kitten was perfect for a Snow Queen and Rapunzel wondered if they both may be leaving this place with a new fur child.

Finally a cute little calico made its way over to Rapunzel and immediately pounced on her when it got to the finish line. Rapunzel let out a chuckle as she picked the kitten up to sit in her lap properly and it began to immediately purr, “Looks like we may have a winner.”

“I do not need another cat,” Elsa pouted, trying to ignore how adorable the snow kitten was or how it was giving her the most heartbreaking look imaginable.

She looked over at her girlfriend, thinking a kind of patchwerk cat seemed oddly appropriate for Rapunzel. “She does seem like she’s completely at home, but I hope she realizes she’s borrowing your lap from me.”

“Why not?” Rapunzel challenged with a smirk on her lips as she continued to pet the kitten that was curled up on her lap, “I wonder if I should do one or do two so they have a pal to play with.” Rapunzel wasn’t quite sure, but this little calico was definitely going home with her, “And she will probably try to lay claim to it for a long time to spite you now.”

“I’ve doomed myself,” Elsa decided, referring to both the cat and the lap. “A companion might not be a bad idea for your calico. Maybe that tortoise shell?” It had seemed to really like Rapunzel’s shoulder. Not that Elsa could blame it.

“I think we’ve found some winners. Shall we attempted to extract ourselves and get the paperwork started?” Rapunzel smiled as she double checked the name tags on the kittens she was considering adopting, “And thanks again for coming with me and I’m not sorry that you’ve got yourself a new cat.” She winked as she got up, promising the kittens to be back shortly, and went to help get Elsa off the floor. This was definitely a lot of fun and she couldn’t wait to get the kittens home.

“I kind of thought that would be inevitable as soon as you told me what we were doing,” Elsa admitted, taking Rapunzel’s hand and getting up. She took a moment, just to smile at her, and stole a kiss. “Hey. I love you.”

And she loved saying that.
