“No, Scooby put that down!”

Having a big dog wasn’t always the easiest, although Scooby was usually such a good dog, rarely acting out or getting overly pushy with smaller dogs or the like. But there were times, unfortunately, when something just caught his attention and very little could get him away from it.

This time, it was a stick about the same size as Daphne’s car!

“C’mon buddy, you know we can’t take home whole trees.” Thankfully, she managed to get it out of his mouth, which Scooby was trying valiantly to get around a piece of wood that was way too big for him to even get his jaw around. “Here, look, you want your ball?” Releasing the catch on Scooby’s leash, enough to let him run a decent distance, Daphne gave his favourite ball a throw along the grass, not too far but far enough to get him away from the branch.

“Go on boy!” So much energy.

Sam had Brady’s leash firmly in his hand, which caused him to lurch forward when the dog lunged after the ball Daphne threw. “Hey, don’t do that.” Luckily, even though he wasn’t prepared for it, Sam had a tight grip and he was able to plant his feet to keep from pitching forward.

“Besides, that dog’s twice as big as you,” he told Brady. He looked up at the person who threw the ball. Well, that was certainly a coincidence. “Daphne?” he questioned, because he recognised her from the network.

“That must be Scooby. Hey. I’m Sam.”

“Hey,” it came out like Daphne was just running into an old friend, someone she’d known for years, rather than a somewhat new internet friend, but that was just Daphne and her ways. “Hi Sam. How are you?!”

Catching up with Scooby, Daphne managed to get him to heel at least for a few minutes, since something would probably get his attentions. Given that she felt like she knew people so much better than would be typical of online friends, given all the information they shared on the network.

“And hi little guy, aren’t you just the cutest?” Although it was very true that Scooby was so much bigger, he came up to Daphne’s chest as it was. “You guys just out for a play around?”

Sam nodded. He didn’t mind the casual familiarity of the greeting. He felt like he knew Daphne, if not well, at least to the point of being friendly. There was no reason not to be friendly, in any case.

“We are.” He answered her question. “Brady needed to stretch his legs.” Maybe Sam did too. He spent a lot of time wearing a suit and sitting in an office. Or a courtroom. He definitely needed the fresh air.

Brady was a decent sized mutt, but he looked tiny compared to Scooby. “They seem to be okay with each other.” There was no growling, just a lot of sniffing. Sam had a tight hold on Brady’s leash, but slowly relaxed his grip when it seemed like there wasn’t going to be an issue between the two dogs.

“It’s the good thing about dogs right, forces you to get out and be healthier.” Although sometimes you really just wanted to stay in and relax, the fresh air was always good.

“Scooby is a pretty friendly guy,” aside from a few times when he got scared by something or a cat hissed at him, Scooby wanted to be everyone’s best friend, even if they didn’t want to be his. “I’m always worried around the really tiny little dogs, like the teacup ones?” Because they were so small and Scooby might hurt them by accident, “He just really likes playing.”

And if the tail wagging was anything to go by, he liked Brady well enough. “So how’re you doing? How’re… things?” Obviously, she meant the dreams, but she didn’t want to say it out loud in case someone thought they were crazy.

“We should let them play,” Sam said, giving a nod toward the dogs. He trusted Brady off leash. He’d come back when Sam called him. And it would be good for him to run around with one of his own kind. Sam couldn’t give him that, being a human and all.

He nodded at the question. “Not too bad. Just...you know, just taking it all one day at a time.” Or one dream at a time, as it were. He didn’t have the dreams too often. In fact, hadn’t had one for several nights. He was probably due to have one soon.

“What about you?”

“Absolutely,” thankfully, Scooby wasn’t about to trample anyone. And Daphne was confident enough to give his head a small scratch before unhooking the leash on his collar, “Do you wanna go play, Scoob? Yeah, you go on and play.”

The dog park was perfectly safe to let them run around, chase and sniff at each other, roll around playing. Maybe burn off some of the excessive energy that Scooby always had.

“That’s probably about the best you can do with these,” Daphne often felt so bad for the people who had the trying dreams, the ones that came with darker themes or dangerous situations. Things that could lead to problems in the waking world.

“I sometimes feel bad, but my dreams are super fun. I’ve got the gang, and Scooby, and we go out and just solve mysteries.” Daphne gave a small shrug, smiling softly. “It’s weird, but, I dunno, I guess it’s pretty cool.”

“I have my brother,” Sam said. Even though in the dreams he’d gone off to school, he’d gotten out of the family hunting business. But then Dean showed up and dragged him back to it. Right after the death of Sam’s dream girlfriend who oddly had the same name as his son.

“And while we tend to get into difficult situations, it seems like we have a knack for getting out of trouble.” Hopefully that would continue. Sam didn’t know what he’d do if something happened to Dean in the dreams. Or what Dean would do if something happened to him.

He hoped he never had to find out.

“I think they like each other,” he said, gesturing toward the dogs. They were playing happily, as dogs should.

Daphne didn’t dream with anyone, she didn’t think Scooby had dreams at all. It was hard to say since he was a dog. Although he was in her dreams, just as involved as everyone else -and they were able to understand him, like magic or something. But she didn’t think there was magic in her dreams since they unmasked phoneys all the time.

“It sounds like you guys have a really good handle on things then,” Daphne wasn’t exactly one for fate, because she believed in choosing your own path, but it did seem like the dreams only gave people things they could handle. “At least it’s you and your brother, right?” Scary things would be easier with two, having someone to talk that stuff through with.

Scooby and Brady seemed to have the best time though, “Maybe we should arrange to meet up a few more times, let them have play dates?”

Sam nodded. “I definitely think I’m lucky to have Dean. Here and in the dreams.” They’d always been close. Sam couldn’t imagine his life, any life, without his brother by his side. Dean could be annoying, but Sam loved him deeply.

“I’d like that,” Sam nodded. “Maybe next time my kid will be with me. He’d love to meet Scooby.” Jesse was the reason he had Brady, after all. Because he couldn’t deny the boy anything, so when he said he wanted a dog, Sam got a dog.

It was nice seeing siblings that were close -Daphne wasn’t particularly close with her sisters after all. And the fact that the dreams at least brought them closer together, it was all the better.

“Oh, that’d be sweet, he’s welcome to come and meet him. Scooby is really good with kids.” Scooby was a sweet dog in general, and he loved meeting people. Sometimes kids were intimidated because Scooby was so big, but Scooby just wanted to play and be friends. “I’m rather fond of them too.” Kids were always fun to talk to after all, so honest, so imaginative.

“He’s five, but he’s already learning to respect animals and their space,” which was to say Sam didn’t anticipate an issue. Scooby was about as tall as Jesse, give or take, but Jesse would handle that like a pro. He loved animals, and Sam was all about cultivating that love.

“And I have a feeling he’ll just love Scooby.” Sam grinned. “It seems like Brady does too.” Watching the dogs play was relaxing to Sam. They weren’t burdened by human concerns. They were just in it for the fun of it.

“That’s a super important lesson. I feel like kids who learn to be good to animals, are nicer people in general.” And then there were little monsters who thought the world owed them things -she’d worked with more than a few of those people.

“I can guarantee, Scooby will love him. Anyone who wants to play with him? Scooby loves. Scooby’s best friend is a horse.” Because Ciri let Scooby run with them sometimes, and the horses were so good about Scoob in their area he’d just made friends with the horse that Ciri regularly rode.

“I dunno about you, but I’m down at this park at least three times a week? I think I’ll be back here on Friday for sure though.”

“That’s perfect. Jesse will come to me after school on Friday, and we’ll head out here then. Brady will be needing to stretch his legs.” Sam hadn’t been to the dog park before, but he was pretty sure he and Brady were going to become regulars pretty quickly.

“Maybe we’ll see you then,” he added.
