Truth be told, Anna had been getting progressively colder despite summer heat for what felt like an annoyingly long time. Just like how her hair was progressively getting whiter. But she didn’t really talk about it and she didn’t want to worry Elsa. After all, an answer existed in the Dreams. An act of True Love. She just had to wait for it to happen and she would wake up and be fine. After all, her sister would have told her if she died in the Dreams as some sort of heads up. Right?
Well. Because of the getting colder and feeling worse, despite the way the weather had gone off kilter and everything just felt wrong, Anna had passed out early, burrowing under blankets as if that would warm her up even though it felt like she would never get warm again. She’d been in the library and Hans was there and he just had to kiss her and she’d be healed from the ice to her heart.
“Oh, Anna. If only there was someone out there who loved you.”
And that was when she realized the truth of the man she had agreed to marry. He planned for her to die. To have Elsa executed for it….she would be the cause of her sister’s death…. And there was nothing she could do because she had thought she had found love when she didn’t know the first thing about it.
Then Olaf was there.
“Love is putting someone else’s needs before your own.”
“Some people are worth melting for…”
And Kristoff. Oh Kristoff….so with Olaf’s help, she somehow managed to escape the library and despite the weakness she felt and the strength of the wind and snow, she was slowly making her way to Kristoff. She would be saved. It would all be okay. But then she heard the sound of a sword. Hans was going to kill Elsa and without even thinking about the consequences and that it meant certain death, Anna threw herself in front of her sister.
“ELSA!”
Bolting upright, the seriously very cold Anna looked around her room as if her sister would be there. She didn’t know if she had succeeded. Logically she knew that Elsa had dreamed things that hadn’t happened in what she had seen. So that had to mean she had survived Hans trying to kill her. But in the chaos of waking up, the coldness that was seemingly overwhelming, logic wasn’t connecting and all Anna knew was that she needed to see her sister.
She could call. Of course she could call. That was the logical thing to do. But Anna was reckless and desperate for reassurance that Elsa was okay. Which meant that she bundled up in the warmest things she could find and despite the weird weather and terrifying creatures that were now seeming to invade Orange County, she began the trek to Elsa’s.
Once she saw Elsa, it would be okay. She just needed to get to her sister.
Elsa hugged her arms as she looked out the window, trying to decide if she needed to brave the weather and the monsters. She worried about Anna and Rapunzel, even though objectively she knew they were both capable women.
She picked up her phone, but Anna wasn't answering any texts and calling her went to voicemail.
She glanced over at a spark of purple flame, "I think I need to go out there, Bruni. Can you watch the condo for me?"
Bruni puffed a bit as Elsa made her way into the bathroom and started to fill the tub. It got to about the halfway point before the Nokk appeared, looking around in confusion.
"Sorry about this, but I need your help." Gently, she stroked his flank, freezing him part-way so he could run on land.
She guided him out of the condo and locked the door behind her, before galloping out into the chaos.
Anna probably should have brought her phone. She was beginning to regret that decision as she made her way in search of Elsa. But she’d just been so desperate to ensure her older sister was okay that things like that fell to the wayside. Also, okay, so she was also trying not to freeze and so she wasn’t thinking entirely straight either. She was just acting on instinct.
Any other day and it would probably have been fine. In theory. It was hard to say. But with the creepy creatures flying around and attacking people? Staying inside was probably a thing she should have done. But it was too late now and besides, when did Anna do what she should do when her heart told her she needed to do something else? And her heart was telling her to find Elsa.
Or to duck into an alley, clutching her heart. It wasn’t as fast as in the Dreams, but she knew she was freezing and it was getting worse. She could feel herself getting weaker. Feel the cold that seemed like it would never go away.
“Please be safe, Elsa…”
There was condensation in front of her from her breath. But it seemed the creature she’d ducked to avoid had moved on.
"Anna, where are you?" Elsa ran back out of the house and jumped onto the Nokk's back. He reared up and she barely regained control, which was not a good sign of her own mental state. But Anna wasn't home and something was terribly wrong.
Elsa scolded herself and her anxiety, Anna was probably fine, she'd just left her phone at home and... gone out into demons.
Freezing one that got too close, Elsa started to ride,, but then she heard a familiar chirping sound as Gale whipped past and spun up ... little bits of ice. There weren't too many things that could be and her mind jumped to the absolute worst.
"Anna!" She galloped after the wind spirit, heedless of the demons. One got close enough to knock her from the Nokk and she skidded into an alleyway, blood dripping from a cut on her face. She froze it, and it dropped to the ground and shattered. Her chest felt like she'd been kicked by Sven.
No time for that, she had to find Anna!
While anxiety often jumped to the worst case scenario even when it wasn’t the case, this was one such instance where it probably was the worst case scenario. Not that Anna was really thinking about that or anything. She just needed to make sure that Elsa was okay. That was what was driving her.
Forcing herself up, the shivering 23 year old wrapped her jacket around her tighter as she started to move forward.
Only to see her sister.
“E...Elsa, y...you’re o..okay….” Her teeth were chattering and condensation from the cold continued with each breath but she didn’t care. She just cared that Elsa was okay. Except she noticed the cut on her cheek and her features furrowed in worry, “Y...you a...are, r...right?”
"Anna?" Elsa turned at the sound of her voice, eyes widening as she took in the state of her. Her heart froze over and a sound came out of her throat not unlike that of a dying animal. She rushed towards her, touching her arm and then her face gingerly, "Oh no, no no no...! You're freezing!"
It really was her worst nightmare. Elsa knew how to control her powers, and she knew what was required to save Anna's heart, but she didn't know how to accomplish that. "What are you doing out here like this? You should have called me, I could have..."
Well only Ahtohallan knew. Ahtohallan! It might actually know, though taking her freezing sister to a frozen glacier might not be the best solution.
That was the trick, figuring out what would work here to prevent her from freezing. Maybe if she had dreamt what actually happened and the aftermath. But she hadn’t. Just the moment of throwing herself in front of Elsa and that was when she woke up. Even if she still wasn’t thinking about herself. She was worried about Elsa.
Or well she could see Elsa was fine besides the cut on her cheek but...well, she was okay and that was what mattered, no Anna’s wellbeing.
Maybe a little of her own wellbeing.
Even so it continued to get cold, so very cold and all she could do was shrug.
“H...had to s...see y..you. H...had t..to m...make s..sure…”
Because Anna was reckless and didn’t think things through when she felt someone she loved was in danger.
Anna's wellbeing meant everything. To Elsa, Anna's wellbeing was the source of everything, good and bad. Being locked away, keeping secrets, the disaster of her coronation. All because she wanted to protect Anna (and by extension her people).
"I'm okay, I'm okay." She tried rubbing warmth into Anna's hands, tried to draw the cold out with her powers.
She should have brought Bruni, maybe his fire could have done something!
"I think my place is closer, I have something there that could help. I just need you to think warm thoughts. Think of … warm hugs and the fireplace and hot cocoa.”
As much as Elsa tried, it was as if the cold refused to leave. Even so, Anna just nodded some. She could see her sister was okay. That was the important thing.
“R….right. W...Warm th...thoughts...I c...can do th...that….”
Shivering, Anna did try to think about warm thoughts. Beaches and hot cocoa and fire and…..definitely not creepy monster things coming up behind her sister. With the last of her strength, the 23 year old managed to shift so she was in the path of the creature just as it’s claw-like thing ran right through her abdomen, the ice beginning to take over and freezing it from it’s contact with her even as Anna herself began to turn to ice.
"Yes, just keep thinking that." Feeling helpless, Elsa tried to smooth out the shoulders of Anna's shirt as if that would do anything but give her hands something to do.
That helplessness turned to cold, hard fear. Anna moved so quickly that Elsa didn't know what was happening until the creature froze, the weight of it causing the claw to snap as it crashed to the ground and shattered.
"Anna!" She grabbed for the claw then stopped herself out of fear of would could happen if she pulled it out. But then ...
In the dreams, she had not actually witnessed Anna freezing over; she'd only seen the aftermath. This was much more horrible than anything she'd ever imagined, and her voice broke as surely as the demon had, "No!"
Freezing was a very unpleasant feeling. She’d been cold for so long but now it was like everything was on pins and fire.
“El--”
And then darkness. A never ending darkness and coldness that would never go away.
Once frozen, the paradoom she’d frozen seemed to topple over and Anna fell to the ground, shattering at Elsa’s feet along with the frozen paradoom.
A wail of absolute despair ripped from her throat as she fell to her knees and vainly tried to push Anna together.
Elsa's heart had shattered along with her.
