Winn had been at work for a few hours now. Although it wasn’t quite his lunch time yet he needed a quick break. He needed to refuel. The coffee in the break room wasn’t going to cut it. It wasn’t sweet enough, no matter how many sugar packets he put in it. He decided to take a quick break and head to a nearby coffee shop. Luckily there were a few around Xanatos Enterprises.
Luckily there were only a few people in line and before he knew it Winn was at the counter placing his order. “Um hi,” Winn greeted even though he didn’t really need to. “I’ll have a white chocolate mocha with an extra shot of espresso, skim milk, heavy on the whip cream.”
Sara was kind of exhausted, and she couldn’t wait until the end of her shift so she could go home and sleep the rest of the daylight away. She’d worked until late at the bar, and then once her shift was done, she’d slapped on a body suit, mask and wig and had taken to the streets to patrol all night. She hadn’t slept yet, but she also hadn’t fully adjusted to the nocturnal lifestyle in the OC yet either. It would come with time, but adjusting to jetlag, the exhaustion from moving, and everything else all at once was a little much.
“Hey,” she said, absently returning his greeting. She punched in his order, narrowly managing to avoid rolling her eyes at it - why on earth would someone need skim milk and a ton of whipped cream? It seems counterintuitive - and then set to making his order - accidentally grabbing the box of heavy cream for it instead of skim milk.
Winn liked to do what he can to make his drink healthy. He wasn’t going to cut back on the sugar so might as well on the milk. At least that’s what he told himself. Made him believe he was being somewhat health conscientious.
After paying for his drink he stepped to the side to wait for it, scrolling through his phone to check on work emails while he waited. See, Mr. Xanatos. It wasn’t a full break.
Sara finished making the drink, putting it on the counter. “One white chocolate mocha with skim milk and whipped cream,” she called, already beginning to rinse off the equipment.
Winn slipped his phone back into his pocket and went to grab his drink, immediately taking a sip. It didn’t taste right. It was heavier than he was used to. He frowned, brows furrowing. He wasn’t the type to complain or send back an order but this just wasn’t right. He stood there, taking another sip, his frown deepening.
Well, it was hard not to notice the nerdy looking guy sipping her coffee and frowning like it was one of the most terrible things he’d ever tasted. She couldn’t just go back to the till to serve the next person with him looking like that. “Is there a problem?” she asked.
Winn’s immediate reaction was to lie and say it was fine. He didn’t want to cause trouble. But he also didn’t really want this coffee. “It’s, um, a little heavier than I’m used to?” he finally said though it definitely came out more as a question than a statement.
Sara’s eyebrows furrowed, not knowing what he was talking about, until she looked back at the carton of milk that she had used for his drink. She caught herself before swearing, but only barely.
“Shi - Shoot, I’m sorry,” she said. “That’s what I get for working all night. I’ll remake that for you,” she said, already working toward it. Even if she didn’t understand why people would willingly drink skim milk, she couldn’t imagine how gross a drink made out of heavy cream would be. Frankly, she was just relieved he was taking it as well as he was.
Winn wasn’t the type to make a big deal about things. He wouldn’t have even complained. So he was relieved that she noticed the mistake on her own. “Thanks,” he said, giving her a smile. “Sucks you had to work all night,” he went on. “You have another job?” He knew most coffee shops closed in the evenings so he could only assume she worked somewhere else.
“Yeah,” Sara said. “I bartend too.” Among other things. “I just need to get used to the nocturnal schedule is all though, and I’ll be good to go.” There was something to be said for sleeping all day. She finished remaking his drink, and she put it up on the counter for him. “There, hopefully that’s better. I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t tell my boss about my screw-up?”
Working late nights followed by early mornings. Didn’t sound like an ideal schedule. Winn definitely couldn’t fault her for the mistake. Not that he would have anyway. He took a sip of the new drink a smile forming in his face. “Much better,” Winn assured. “Don’t worry. Your secret is safe. Just maybe be more careful on the rest of your orders.” In case someone wasn’t as understanding as him,
Sara laughed. “My hero,” she teased, though she really was grateful that no one else had to hear about it - partly because she was pretty sure her bosses would not appreciate her wasting over half carton of heavy cream. “Next time you come in, your drink’s on me.”
“Thanks,” Winn said his cheeks feeling warm. “But uh, that’s not necessary.” It had all worked out after all. And he still had some time to get to work. If he got going at least. “I’ll see you around,” with that he left.
