"Ye were becoming such a beautiful woman, Rahney! I was sae proud.."
Who: Rahne and Moira
What: Lunch and serious talks
When: Saturday, before Moira went to test Conner
Where: Rahne's home.
Status: Complete
RAting: PG-13 for talk of death
Moira decided to make it a point to pay some more attention to Rahne, and that's why she showed up at her daughter's home unnannounced. Besides, maybe she'll catch her with a boy!
Not likely. Still trying to deal with dreams of sort of dating a boy who technically wasn't someone she should be dating because of age difference, but not actually with any actual boy. Rahne was, however, surprised but pleased at her mother's arrival.
"Brought yuir dinner. I wanted tae see how ye were doin', we havenae talked much lately," Moira said, regret in her voice.
"Och, that's lovely of you!" Rahne moved aside to let Moira in. "And aye, we've not managed to catch each other lately."
"How have ye been?" Moira stepped inside, carrying a bag of take-out.
"Pretty good." She closed the door after Moira and smiled. "How've you been?"
"Busy," Moira said. She couldn't say why exactly, that was up to Illyana. But it was the truth. She took a seat wearily, "Verrah busy.."
"Ahh. You should try tae get some rest when you can." Rahne took a seat next to Moira and started unpacking the take-out.
"I cannae rest, lass. There's tae much tae be done. I've got sae much knowledge and I could HELP people!"
"At least ye came over tae eat with me, so I know you're remembering to eat sometimes."
"Och, lass! I remember tae eat, most of the time. Maybe even half o'the time!" Moira laughed, and a genuine smile crossed her face. "Maybe that's an excuse tae see ye more often."
Rahne grinned. "We should schedule some lunch dates, aye."
"We could make it a regular thing?" Moira took the food out of the bag and then added, "Perhaps every Thursday, aye?"
Rahne grinned. "Aye, that'd be lovely!"
"Have ye given any consideration tae taking a research role with me, or someone else?" Moira asked.
"I've been thinking about it, aye."
"Ye'd dae quite well. Ye have the brains an' the schoolin' for it," Moira pointed out, taking a bite out of some chicken.
Rahne grinned shyly and took a few bites. "It'd be fun, I think. And good for making decisions on what I want to do next."
"The experience would serve ye well know matter what ye plan tae do!" Suddenly, she segued, "So when do I get grandbairns?"
Rahne coughed. "Och, Mum!"
"Well?" Moira leaned forward and grinned at her.
Rahne sighed. "Mum...I havenae even met anyone I want to date yet, let alone have children with." And based on the dreams, she wasn't even sure if she'd make good dating decisions whenever she did find someone to date.
"Ye could adopt?" By this point Moira was giving her daughter her best trollfase.
"Mum, I am not emotionally ready to have children," she said. "Nor am I really financially ready. So...not anytime soon."
"I know lass, I'm just joshin' ye."
Rahne looked at her mother. Joshing. That really was not very funny just now, and Rahne's face said as much.
Moira blinked, "Shite. Did I say somethin' wrong?"
"...not exactly," Rahne said. "I just...have had dreams about an awkward relationship that I should not have been having with a lad named Josh. You do not repeat that, though, do ye hear?"
"Och..I had nae idea, I'm sorry. That must have been after..." After she had died. Moira rubbed the back of her neck, the memory of that suddenly fresh in her mind.
"It was...complicated." And probably ended badly.
Moira reached over and patted Rahne's hand, "I'm sure it all worked out in the end."
Rahne gave her a look that said 'I think that is really bloody unlikely, but thanks anyway.'
"I've been meanin' tae ask ye..."
"What?"
"Did it work? Did the cure work?
"...what cure?"
"Och.." Moira sat back, and sighed, "Maybe ye dunnae remember Legacy yet, then."
"...nae, I've not dreamed of anything by that name yet," Rahne said.
Moria nodded, "It's a virus that affects mutants. I...was killed while researching a cure."
"...you got KILLED?!?"
"Aye. Muir Island was attacked by a woman called Mystique. There was barely time for me tae say good bye. I managed tae transfer what I could tae Charles."
"Och..." Rahne wasn't quite sure how to process the fact that Moira...was murdered in the dream world.
"I dunnae know what she wanted, except my research." It was easier to say now. And she was glad it was off her chest.
Rahne took a deep breath. Then she stood up and hugged Moira.
Moira wrapped her arms around Rahne, feeling suddenly choked up, "I..thought ye knew and I thought it was safe tae.."
"I havenae had all that many dreams...and there's...clearly some big gaps. Some of them I'm no more than a lass of thirteen, and some of them I'm a woman grown."
"Ye were becoming such a beautiful woman, Rahney! I was sae proud.." She swallowed, trying to blink away tears, and hugged her tighter, "Sae proud.."
Rahne hugged Moira tighter as well, tears welling up in her eyes.
"I'm sorry I didnae mean," Moira choked out.
"I love ye, Mum."
"I love ye tae, Rahney."
