WHO: Thomas and Elena
WHAT: The awkward ex conversation
WHEN: Recently
WHERE: The clinic
STATUS: Complete
RATING: Low
Thomas wasn’t even sure if Alex was working at the clinic today but he figured it was worth a shot to swing by and check on him. And if he wasn’t here than it would be a quick stop that no one needed to know about. He wasn’t even thinking about the fact that Damon’s ex fiancee worked here although he knew it on a subconscious level and as he stepped through the doors and caught sight of the dark haired young woman the knowledge hit him like a bucket of ice water getting dumped on him and he was sure he made an almost audible gasp. Shit he should have remembered that she worked here too. He must have pissed off God at some point in the past to get luck like his. He squared his shoulders and gave her a smile when he saw her glance at him, crossing the waiting area with a smiled apology tossed at the redhead at the desk. “Hello there doc. Got a moment to talk?”
***
“How can I help?” Elena questioned, glancing up from the computer work she was engaged in at the moment. She’d certainly seen him around the clinic on more than a few occasions, had even exchanged greetings with him but if they had ever had an extended conversation or if he had ever told her his name it was escaping Elena’s mind at the moment.
**
“I was hoping we could get to know each other a little seeing as we both have history with Damon.” Thomas told her, getting directly to the point in hopes of getting her away from her computer. He wanted to get to know her but not in front of the judgy receptionist who he could tell was glaring at him.
***
That he name-dropped Damon was a bit of a surprise, Elena blinking a minute before she replied. “How do you know Damon?” Left unquestioned for the moment was why he would want to know Damon’s ex-girlfriend. Nor did Elena make any move to stand.
**
Thomas was trying to keep his tone casual as he leaned lightly against the wall near her. “I’m living with him. We’ve been seeing each other for a while.”
***
“Oh.” It was the only word that came to mind. Not that she hadn’t know Damon was not exactly binary in finding people attractive. But it explained some things. Including how he knew about her history with Damon.
Yeah, the awkward conversation with your significant other’s ex probably would be better away from eavesdropping co-workers or patients. Pushing herself up from the chair, Elena gestured for Thomas to walk with her.
“What did you want to talk about?”
**
Thomas couldn’t help himself as he gave the receptionist a small wave before following Elena as she walked to a less populated area of the Clinic. “Straight to the point. I like that. I know that Damon fucked up with you. He’s been honest about that. But I also know that you’re still important to him. So since you’re important to him, and he’s important to me I thought we should get to know each other a little. That’s all.”
***
She supposed she could understand that. Elena was lucky (Caroline might say crazy) in that she’d stayed on good terms with her ex. So it made a certain amount of sense that Damon’s current boyfriend would want to get to know her, too.
“Did you have something specific in mind? I’m guessing more than just a quick chat at work.”
***
“Well I wouldn’t want to keep you from your patients for too long. Alex has told us how busy it can get in here. And the receptionist already hates me.” Thomas told her, lowering his voice slightly at that last part as he gave her a conspiratorial wink.
“Let me buy you a drink some night. Not at Purgatory if you’d be more comfortable. We can talk and get to know each other since we’re both in his life and I’m not going anywhere. And I don’t want you to either.” It wouldn’t be the same as Alex, he didn’t think his heart could stand that extra pull on it but he did want them to get along.
***
Elena thought for a moment but nodded. “One drink,” she agreed. “And you’re right. Not at Purgatory.” It would be a little awkward. Not just the possibility that Damon would be there but also for the possibility that Enzo or Kol would, too.
***
Thomas thought for a moment. “How about Lux?” It was there or Pandemonium but for talking to get to know someone better Lux seemed like a more comfortable choice.
***
“Lux,” Elena nodded. “When? A weeknight might be better.” In that it might be a bit less crowded
***
Thomas gave her a flash of his smile at her agreement. “How about Tuesday? If you’re off that night.”
***
“I actually am. Tuesday, then,” Elena agreed. “I’ll see you then.”
