Now that Poe had finally met Finn, in his dreams, he felt closer to the other man, which was strange considering they’d known each other for a very short time before crashing on Jakku, but Poe could tell that they had had an instant connection the moment Finn had taken off his Stormtrooper helmet. Not that it had been that different from when they had met in real life. Sure, Poe had been flirting a little when they’d first met at the movie theater, but he had definitely felt a connection to the other made even then.
Now that Poe had dreamt about Finn and assured his friend that he had not died when they’d crashed on Jakku, Poe thought it would be a good time to hang out so he had invited Finn over to play video games and have some beers.
Finn had to admit it had been an immense relief to find out that Poe hadn’t actually died in the burning, sinking wreckage in the Jakku desert. Turned out they had merely been separated, and for that he was grateful. He had dreaded breaking the news to Poe that the other man wouldn’t be having any more dreams. It made him wonder then, if the pilot with the amazing moves in the skies of Takodana had in fact been Poe and he just hadn’t known it at the time. It was a question he was going to ask once they settled down to some drinks and gaming.
Finn settled his back into the couch as the console fired up. He grabbed his beer bottle and took a sip before glancing over at his friend. He still couldn’t believe how they’d clicked instantly both here and in the dreams but he was glad for it. Dream Finn needed friends badly. And here he had moved away from most of his.
“You ready to get your ass kicked?” he smirked over at Poe.
Poe was very glad that he hadn’t died when they had crashed on Jakku, because it would have been a huge letdown after the daring escape he and Finn had made. Not only that, but after the torture he’d endured, both physically and mentally, by Ren, it wouldn’t have been fair if he’d died before he found out whether or not they ended up stopping The First Order.
He laughed at Finn’s comment as he too settled into the couch, waiting for the various start up screens to flash across the tv screen, “Hey, I’ve been playing video games longer than you, so you should be the one preparing to get his ass kicked.”
“Oh you mean like Atari? I’m pretty sure Pong doesn’t count.” Finn teased back, throwing the other man a look. Then he got down to business selecting a character from the screen. Finn went with the svelte looking female character he knew was capable of kicking some serious ass in a short time.
“Haha!” Poe said, sarcastically as he playfully shoved at Finn’s shoulder, “How old do you think I am? My first console was a Sega in the nineties. My dad bought it, claiming it was a gift for me at the end of the third grade, but he spent just as much time playing it as I did.” Poe chose his go to character who he knew all the special moves for and locked in his choice. “So suffice to say, I’ve been playing this game for a long time!”
Finn smiled at that. It must have been nice to have a dad. His had bounced before he’d been born, and his mother had been killed as a byproduct of street violence. His grandmother didn’t know about or understand video games very well.
“I didn’t get a system. Grams thought they’d ruin my eyes or something stupid.” Finn said as the screen loaded their battle. “I had to learn at friends' houses.” He wasn’t going to say at what age he started. Clearly Poe had the advantage but Finn wasn’t about to admit to that.
He immediately set his character upon Poe’s with a series of high flying kicks and combos. “Take, THAT.”
“Adults come up with the craziest reasons not to get kids things,” Poe said as if he weren’t an adult himself while he blocked some of the kicks from Finn’s character and countered with combos of his own as well as leg sweeps, “But that is what friends’ houses are for, so it sounds like you took advantage of that.” As they played BB-8 rolled over and watched the screen, his head swiveling around a bit as he looked between the tv and Poe and Finn, “I wonder if BB-8 could play video games. It’d give me someone to play against when I’m alone.” Now that would be interesting.
“I’m pretty sure...he’d kick your ass...like I’m gonna.” Finn grunted, as he struggled to keep up his defenses against Poe’s moves. So far he wasn’t doing so great. “He’s an astromech - they can calculate like crazy. Also you know there’s this thing called the internet, you can play people online too. Including your friends.” Of course that wasn’t as much fun as doing so in person.
“Oooh, those are some big words,” Poe said as he hit a few buttons to execute a special move and slammed Finn’s character into the ground, depleting a large chunk of his health, “But can you back them up?” BB-8 beeped and chirped, excitedly a few times, clearly cheering Poe on, “And I know you can play games with people on the internet, but it always feels so weird. However, got any games you’d recommend?”
“Oh come on!” Finn howled as he watched his health drop into the danger zone. “You’re cheating.” And he aggressively started button mashing. “And no, I don’t. I’m a cop, not a fancy flyboy, I don’t have time for video games.” And it was showing. Badly.
He desperately tried to block Poe’s moves, and managed to get some powerful jabs in himself, but Finn knew it was only a matter of time before Poe won, but he wasn’t going down without a fight.
“Not cheating. Just skilled.” Poe hit a few more buttons, which eventually led to Finn’s health bar depleting and a win for Poe, “Hell yeah!” He turned to Finn, grinning as BB-8 beeped happily, acting like Poe’s personal cheering squad.
Putting down his controller, Poe reached for his beer and took a swig, “Oh hey, I finished putting together my X-Wing.” Setting down the beer bottle, Poe grabbed his phone and brought up his pictures, “Wanna see?” He held the phone out to Finn, the first picture was of Black One when it was still in the individual pieces he’d gotten it in; if he scrolled through them he’d see it in various stages of assembly, which also meant that Michael was in a few of them. In at least two of them Michael was completely unaware that Poe had taken them as they focused a little more on the curly haired mechanic than on the X-Wing.
Finn scowled momentarily, but then he was making a “really” face at BB-8 cheering their mutual friend on. “What? No love for me? Maybe I should sub you in and see how Poe does then.” He took a sip of his own beer during the break as the game reloaded. But at the mention of the X-Wing it was instantly forgotten.
“Wait, WHAT? Already? Man that was fast!” Finn said as Poe thrust his phone in his face. He took the phone and pinched and zoomed and swiped through them one by one, his brow scrunching as he scrutinized the details. “It’s crazy that you got an entire ship from the dreams. You’re so freakin’ lucky.” Finn had never gotten much of a chance to see Black One up close in the dreams - there’d simply been too much going on. He was also quietly jealous that everyone seemed to get cool things and he got - a Storm Trooper outfit. “That Michael?” He handed the phone back to Poe. He’d heard him mention the guy as someone who was helping Poe put together the ship. “What’d he think of it?”
Poe laughed at Finn’s reaction to losing and took another swig of beer then laughed again at his reaction to the information about Black One. “It’s the craziest thing. Knowing that, not only do I have my own plane, but a plane that can going into fucking space.” He wasn’t sure just yet when he was going to actually go into space, the idea was incredibly overwhelming, but he knew it would be soon.
When Finn asked about Michael, he nodded, his smile going showing that he was clearly fond of the other man, “Yeah. Well helping to put together a space ship was certainly not something he’d ever thought he’d be doing.” It was something Poe had never thought he’d be doing, “And obviously he’s a little jealous.”
The affectionate smile went completely past Finn, who could sometimes miss obvious things like that. “Who wouldn’t be?” Finn smirked. “I’m jealous. And I’m not even a pilot!” He took another sip, then shoved a handful of chips into his mouth. “And you got Bee-bee ate too!” he said around them. “All I got was Storm Trooper armor with blood on it. It’s not cool, man. Not cool.”
Poe laughed and took another sip of his own beer, “Hey, I don’t control what I get,” He smirked over at Finn as BB-8 beeped, “BB says you might get something cool eventually. I mean, considering our dreams you have to. We’re in a fucking space war. You’ve got to get something cool, right?” He had no doubt that Storm Trooper armor was not the only thing that Finn was going to get, “And if it makes you feel any better, I’ll bring you to see Black One soon.”
Finn’s brow scrunched as he thought through the dream’s he had. Besides the Trooper uniform, he didn’t “own” much so far - just the clothes on his back, Poe’s Jacket, and the rifle Solo had given him. Not very exciting. “I dunno, man. So far it’s just clothing and maybe a rifle. It’s like a bad Christmas.” He shrugged a little and perked up at the mention of Black One. “Really? That’d be sweet! I really want to see her up close, I didn’t get a chance in the dreams at all.”
“I’ll arrange that then. It kind of sucks though that X-Wings are only big enough for one person,” Poe wanted nothing more than to be able to take Michael, Rey and Finn into space. He knew that each of them would love to go to space, “Now, are you ready to get your ass kicked again?” He asked, taking another sip of his beer before reaching for his controller again and smirked at Finn.
