Who: Kara Danvers & Winn Schott
When: Backdated: Early June
Where: A Coffee Shop
What: Kara Awkwardly Pretends Not to Already Know Winn
Rating/Warnings: Family Friendly
Status: Complete
Winn had moved to California a few days ago. Two to be exact. And he was already starting his first day at a new job. Well not new exactly. It was the same job he had done in New York, for the exact same company, but at a different location. Where he would be in charge of different people. Winn was good at computers, people not so much. He had no idea how his new staff would react to him. He was the outsider coming in and taking charge after all. So Winn wanted and needed to do something to break the ice.
Which was why he was ordering two dozen donuts. It was out of his way considering he lived in the same building his office was located in. But it was worth it. He even got up extra early (a rare feat for him) to make sure he had time to get donuts before work. Once his order was placed he waited patiently, or what he thought was patiently considering he was nervously tapping his foot, for the donuts.
Kara’s morning routine usually consisted of stopping for coffee and a donut at the shop near her work and this morning was no different. She had just stepped into the shop, gaze taking in all the other early morning customers when she spotted a familiar face. A face that she had dreamt of for the last three years. Winn.
Eyes widening, she felt her lips turning up into a smile and took a step as if she were going to approach him when she quickly reminded herself that while she knew who Winn was, he did not know her and if she approached him, she was likely to scare him and she didn’t exactly want to make him think she was crazy. Not this early in the morning.
Instead, approached the register and placed her order then moved aside so that she was near Winn, but not too close and adjusted her glasses, “It’s a beautiful day, isn’t it?” Kara was not good at making random small talk and she knew it, but she also couldn’t think of anything else to say at random that would possibly get Winn’s attention.
Was she talking to him? Or just talking? Winn wasn’t sure. And yet it felt rude not to respond in some way. “Uhh, yeah,” he got out a bit awkwardly. “It’s nice.” The weather was better than New York at least. Though he wasn’t sure he would be able to get used to all the sunshine.
Kara took the opportunity, now that Winn had taken the poorly set up bait, to turn her attention towards him, pretending to be surprised that he’d responded, “Oh, sorry. I was talking to myself. I mean, just out loud. I do that sometimes.” She smiled, practically bursting inside at the thought that she was actually talking to Winn who she knew so well in the dreams. “I know it’s a little crazy.”
So she wasn’t talking to him. Maybe he shouldn’t have responded. Oh well, too late now it wasn’t like he could take it back. “Ah,” he commented. “I think that happens to the best of us.” He knew he had probably made a comment out loud on occasion. “I’ll, uh, let you get back to it,” he offered since he had kind of forced conversation upon her.
Well that wasn’t what Kara had wanted at all. “Oh, that’s okay. I mean, if I keep talking to myself then someone is bound to think I’ve lost it.” She smirked and extended a hand towards Winn, “I’m Kara.” Okay, so maybe people didn’t usually go around randomly introducing themselves to people they had just met; at least not quite as quickly as Kara was at the moment, but if she wanted to keep talking to Winn then she needed to do something and this seemed like the most logical thing to do. Now she only hoped that Winn didn’t start to think she was crazy.
“Winn,” he replied, reaching out to shake her hand. “Happy to be of service.” For the whole giving her someone to talk to so people didn’t think she’d lost it thing. Hopefully she got what he meant. He dropped her hand shifting his weight from one foot to the other. “So uh,” he said, still not sure if he should make conversation. “Do you come here a lot?”
“It’s nice to meet you, Winn.” Kara said, still smiling as she shook Winn’s hand, glad that he didn’t seem to think that she was crazy, “I do.” She said, in response to Winn’s question, “It’s got some of the best coffee in the area and it’s close by where I work.” There were a number of independently owned cafes and bakeries in the area and Kara enjoyed most of them, but this particular one did honestly have some of the best coffee in the area.
“I’ll keep that in mind,” Winn replied with a smile. He had only been in town a few days and needed to find a good place for coffee. Plus it was his close to his work as well. “Really?” he asked with a raised brow. “Where do you work?”
“I’m a personal assistant at a small newspaper nearby.” After Stark Industries, she’d decided to try her hand at journalism again, but all she had been able to find in the field, at the time, was another personal assistant job and she’d figured at least she had experience as a personal assistant so why not? “What about you? I mean, if you don’t mind me asking.” Yes, Winn had asked her first so if probably wasn’t too personal a question, but she wanted to be sure and still worried about coming on too strong and weird.
“Sounds like an interesting job,” Winn commented before answering her question. “I work for Xanatos Enterprises. It’s uh, actually my first day at the offices out here.” He was about to overshare and say he had moved from New York but then his name was called. He grabbed the two boxes of donuts before turning his attention back to Kara. “I should uh, probably get going. First day and all.”
“It’s alright. A lot of coffee trips and retrieving layouts and things.” It was definitely nothing like her PA job she’d had for Tony Stark or even her PA job for Cat Grant, in the dreams. When Winn’s name was called, she moved so that he could grab his order and nodded, “Right. Good luck on your first day, Winn.” Smiling, Kara gave him a little wave before getting an idea, “Oh wait, so this might seem odd, but what hasn’t been already, right?” Kara grabbed a nearby napkin and searched for a pen in her purse, “Let me give you my number. You know, if you want tips on other coffee shops or want to hang out or whatever.” Kara knew she was being awkward, but she couldn’t help it.
Winn definitely wasn’t expecting her to give him her number. That sort of thing didn’t usually happen to him. Or happen to him at all. “Oh, yeah, uh thanks,” he said, accepting the napkin. “See you, Kara.”
