Who: Leon and Peeta What: Leon stops in to pick up some baking for the two sweet-aholics he feeds When: Recently Where: Mellarky Warnings/Ratings: Low/none Status: Complete
It was finally the weekend, but Leon was pretty sure that it was still too early in the morning to barge in on D without D giving him an earful. How the man could sleep in so late, Leon would never understand. Then again, he supposed there weren’t a lot of people who would understand how Leon woke up with the sun every morning so he could fit in his daily workouts.
He had some time to kill, so checking out a new bakery seemed like the way to go. He could find something sweet for D and Chris to make up for inevitably waking them up when he showed up, and maybe he’d find a bagel or something for himself. He remembered the guy on the Network, the one who didn’t use artificial blueberries in his blueberry icing, and so he walked in, wearing a t-shirt and jeans, and without even really thinking of it, beelined for the dessert display.
It was pretty early so Peeta didn’t have all the desserts out in the case just yet. He had made sure to get out the donuts he had been experimenting with, a few cupcakes, tarts, and a couple pies. His team had been busy this morning and they still had more to make. It was a lot easier with more people on his team than it had been when it was just him. He would probably focus some more on the wedding cakes that were due soon, but he helped out where he could.
He was bringing out a tray of croissants when the man entered the store and Peeta gave a friendly smile, “Good morning.” He leaned down to put the croissants into the case before straightening up, “What can I get ya?”
Leon frowned at the display a little longer, before inclining his head toward the baker. “Not sure yet. I’m looking to pick something up for my kid brother and…” He floundered for a title to give D - they weren’t friends, he couldn’t really say ‘suspect,’ when D wasn’t an official suspect in anything (nevermind the fact that buying baked goods for the man you were investigating wasn’t exactly normal), and he was more than Chris’s babysitter. “And some other guy,” he finished, a little lamely. “You’re Peeta, right? I think we talked on the Network.”
“I am, you must be Leon,” Peeta recognized him from his posts and he knew that the man wanted to stop in sooner rather than later. He let out a chuckle at Leon’s frustration, “And picking out morning pastries is definitely a hard thing to do in the morning. I know you wanted some fruit tarts when we spoke and I have a couple here to go in the case.” He had a good memory for things like that and he was hoping that would help aid Leon in his decision.
“That’s me,” Leon confirmed, with a bit of a smile. “We did talk about tarts.” And maybe a fruit tart wasn’t such a bad idea. For one, fruit was probably a better desert for Chris than say, a cinnamon bun or something. “You mentioned some cupcakes with that real fruit icing too, didn’t you? Don’t suppose you’ve got any of those ready to go?”
“I do, actually. I’ve got a pan full of the blueberry lemon ones in back, they were just cooling. How many do you want? I can go frost them up for you and bring them out,” Peeta was more than happy to bring Leon however many he wanted. Besides, cupcakes were better when they were fresh so it wasn’t any bother to Peeta to get them ready to go for him.
Leon frowned to himself. “Might as well make it three,” he said after a moment. He couldn’t very well bring one for D or Chris without the other, and he was sure Chris would mention something about Leon not having any if he didn’t get himself a cupcake. Besides, “If I don’t get myself one and they’re good, my little brother will probably try to share his with me.”
“Well, you definitely don’t want to steal any of your brother’s cupcake. I totally get that,” Peeta laughed. It was far more enjoyable to just eat your own then take away anything from your sibling - well sometimes. Peeta was happy to steal food from his brothers when he was younger, “Give me a sec and I’ll be right back with them.” He went back into the kitchen, grabbing three cupcakes out of the pan, and grabbed the frosting. He got to work using his piping bag and decorated them before putting them into their own box and bringing them back out, “So, anything else you want? You’re going to make your brother really happy with some special treats.”
“Yeah, I’m not sure if they’re really considered ‘special treats’ anymore,” Leon muttered. “More like a normal breakfast food these days. The guy he’s living with has a sweet tooth the size of Everest.” It was an exaggeration - D did make sure to make Chris eat food that wasn’t pastries - but it was only a small one. “I’ll make sure to tell him that you frosted them just for us though. I’ll take a couple of those fruit tarts too.”
Peeta wasn’t even going to ask about that kind of living arrangement, but Peeta understood a sweet tooth, “And that’s very kind of you. Hopefully you’ll come back again and try some other stuff. If there’s ever anything you’re craving just let me know and I can see if I can make it happen.” He reached into a case to box up a couple of the fruit tarts. He was happy to make special requests in bulk if it seemed like something other people would eat.
“I’m sure I will,” Leon said. There was something kind of nice about being able to buy things from other people on the Network. It was like a bit of a community. “Maybe I’ll actually bring Chris by next time so he can pick out his own treats.”
“Oh for sure stop by with him. Try to figure out what kind of dessert he really likes and I can try to make it for him as a surprise,” Peeta offered up with a smile. He brought the box over to the cash register to ring Leon up, “I always enjoy trying new things or making special orders. Nothing more boring than the same old stuff in the case every day.” Variety was definitely the spice of life for Peeta when it came to his business.
Leon laughed. “Well, give me a burger and a beer every day, and I’d be a happy man,” he said, grinning toothily, showing his slightly-pointier-than-average canines.
Once Peeta had rang Leon up, Leon paid the total and took the boxes. “Thanks man. I’ll make sure to ask Chris if there’s anything special he wants though, and maybe I’ll get you to whip it up for him.”
“Ha, I can point you to a few good restaurants around here that can do that for you,” although maybe Peeta should consider a liquor license for the bakery, could make things interesting, “And definitely let me know. Have a great day, hope they really enjoy these. And hopefully I’ll see you around again.”
