Who: Mal and Nova
Where: College cafeteria
What: Meeting / Making a new friend?
Status: Ongoing.
Mal was thinking perhaps she should have signed on for summer classes, but she wanted to get settled, find a place, a car, set up a life here before she added college into the mix. She was still undecided on what her secondary major will be, knowing art would be the main one. Mal set up an appointment with her advisor, who she had a feeling might transfer her to someone else. Mal wasn’t being difficult, she just needed to figure everything out before she started this chapter of her life, especially when she had to tell her mother about it.
Seeing the cafeteria was open, she headed in there to see what they had and bought her a quick lunch. Looking around, she found a small table in the back and slid into the chair. She opened a small stretch pad she kept with her, and started to doodle a bit as she ate her lunch.
Nova was a little nervous about starting University in the fall. She’d done grade one in a public classroom, but that was the last time she’d done the formal education thing, and she wasn’t really sure what to expect. One thing she knew for sure was that it was going to be a world different than sitting at home, learning explosives and poisons and combat from her Family.
The first thing she had to do was familiarize herself with the terrain, and so she’d been stopping by the campus a couple times a week to wander around, peak into classrooms and poke around the science labs, see what kind of facilities they had if she wanted to keep up her physical training between classes. She didn’t know what classrooms her classes would be in, but by the end of the summer she was determined to be able to plot out the quickest paths between them, no matter what buildings they were in.
Not as many students took spring and summer classes as they did in the fall, Nova knew, but there must have been some kind of orientation or event happening today because the halls were crowded, and by the time it was time for lunch, she was exhausted from having to maneuver between the crowds of people. The cafeteria was full too, and Nova looked around in dismay, her lunch on a tray in her hand, wondering if she was going to be able to find a table after all. But there, in the back, was an empty spot across from a girl who was sketching something. Maybe she was so busy drawing she wouldn’t mind if Nova came and sat with her, so she approached the table.
“Hey, is this spot taken?” she asked.
When Mal heard a voice, she looked up, moving her purple hair out of her face, “Sure,” she said with a nod of her head, she was the one who really shouldn’t be there. “I mean, no, you can have it, sorry.” she put the pencil down, being a little awkward. “Sorry, I was just not paying attention,” meaning she was doodling and she was in her own little world.
“Please sit down,” she moved her food closer to her so the girl would have room to sit on the table.
Nova nodded, the corner of her lips threatening to curl upwards, though she resisted the temptation. She put her food down at the space that was cleared for her, and got ready to eat, realizing when her forkful of food was halfway up to her mouth that she should maybe thank the girl or something.
“Thanks,” she said, awkwardly.
Mal looked over at her, nodded her head, “No problem,” she told her as she open her bood to doodle some more as she took a sip of her drink. Then she paused, this woman must be a student. “Are you a student?” she asked hesitantly. Mal didn’t want to come off awkward, but she would love to talk to more people who go to school here.
“Not yet,” Nova admitted. “I’m starting up in the fall though. I’ve been trying to come in during the summer so I can get familiar with the campus. I’m pretty sure the last thing I’d want on my first day was to get irretrievably lost.”
“Me too!” Mal burst out in excitement, but then cringed out how it sounded, “Sorry, I’m here doing the same thing. I just want to know everything before I actually start.” She smiled at Nova, extended her head, “Hi, I’m Mal.” she told him.
Nova was a little startled at Mal's enthusiasm, though her wide-eyed look softened into a smile. She didn't think she'd ever met someone who got so excited about something small like that - Honey, maybe, though normally about a 'ravishing new eyeshadow palette' or something - but it wasn't a bad thing. Besides, it wasn't like she'd ever really had a chance to meet anyone outside of her Family before, let alone people her own age.
Nova took her hand. "I'm Nova," she said. "What are you going to be studying?" She paused. "Don't say art, or I'm going to feel dumb," she added, attempting to add a joking lilt to her voice.
“Ummm,” Mal looked at her sheepishly, “Art, sorry, but I’m going to minor in something, just not too sure what that will be yet. I was here to talk to my advisor today.” Mal shook her head, “Sorry, I’m new here, to the town, all I know is my cousins and my best friend, but no one else...not really.”
She shifted, “I’ve spoken with a few people on the network, but not face to face.” Mal felt like she was coming off as a weirdo. “I’m going to shut up now.”
“I mean, I should have guessed that, given…” Nova gestured to the sketchpad. Really, she probably would have been more surprised to find out that Mal didn’t study art.
“I’m not new here, but I don’t know many people either,” Nova admitted. “I’ve been talking to people on the Network too.” She paused for a moment. “Assuming you mean Valarnet, I mean. I guess there’s probably more than one network out there.”
“Yeah that and you’re right, there more than likely yes, but it’s the only one I know,” Mal said with a shrug of her shoulder, “What about you?” she asked, “what will you be studying here?” she asked as she shifted some to get a better look at Nova. “I’ve only seem to come across art majors at the moment.” Which given that subject she study, it makes sense.
