It wasn’t that Leon had disliked his previous partner. It was just that Andrews was a bit of a judgmental asshole who was about as interesting as a soggy cardboard box.
Okay, so maybe Leon had disliked him.
Either way, when the Captain told Leon that he was getting a partner change, and his partner was then going to be Laurel, Leon had been overjoyed. He hadn’t leapt for joy when the Captain told him the news, but he did head immediately over to Laurel’s desk so he could let her know. He sat down in the chair across from her. “Hey, partner,” he said cheerily. “How’s it going?”
Laurel was the odd woman out, she became a weighing station, basically going through partners till they moved on to a more permanent partner. She didn’t mind it, but she missed the stability she had with Leon and with Finn before his paperwork was sorted out and he moved on. She had been looking through some witnesses accounts when she heard the chair move across from her, but she didn’t look up till Leon spoke.
Her eyes widen, she caught the partner part and smiled at him, “I don’t think I’ve ever heard you this cheery before, kinda freaking me out here. You better not be joking,” she warned him.
“Yeah, well, you’d be cheery too if you were told you didn’t have to work with Andews again,” he said. “I definitely wouldn’t joke about this though. Just got the word from the chief. Orcot and Lance, the Dream Team are back together.”
She chuckled, “Yeah….Andrews,” she shook her head, but her smile never left her lips, “this is good news,” she told him as she sat up in her chair, “you bringing any cases over or just going to work on mine?”
“I just wrapped up my last one with Andrews,” Leon said. “So whatever you’ve got, I’m ready for.”
Laurel nodded her head, she leaned back, picked up a file, than tossed it on his desk, “I got it yesterday, seems simple enough.” She shrugs, “maybe the cases will get better now that we are back together!”
Leon snorted. “Hey, I’ll take simple,” he said, taking the file and flipping through it. “Trust me, my life is complicated enough. I don’t need to add work on top of that.”
“How is little man doing?” she asked him with a warm smile, “or if that one of the complications?” she arched a brow, she didn’t want to get too personal in the office, “Wanna get some coffee, other than here?”
“He’s doing good,” Leon said, and then frowned a little. “Well, still not talking, but he seems happier now.” He hadn’t taken his second break up with Alex very well, but since he moved in with D, he’d been smiling again. But, that wasn’t necessarily something he wanted to talk about in the office either. He got razzed enough with how much time he spent investigating D’s pet shop, he didn’t need everyone around to know that his brother was living with him now. “Coffee sounds great. I can drive. How have things been with you?” he asked, getting up to walk them out.
She grabbed her bag and followed him out, “Things are, the same.” Laurel chuckled softly, “Livvia is still growing each day, sassy as ever.” She shook her head as they headed to the car, “Ollie been around a lot, we are settling down into a routine which is good for Livvia.” She looked over at Leon, “I’m glad he’s happier, perhaps the talking will come in time.” She offered a kind smile, she wished nothing but the best for him. “Maybe we’ll set a playdate soon so I can spoil him with ice cream.”
“Glad to hear it,” Leon said. “Kids do better if their parents get along.” His own parents had been hopelessly in love, and he thought he turned out pretty good. “I think Chris would love that. Of course, he probably eats enough sweets now to turn every tooth in head, including the ones that hadn’t come in yet. He opened the car door, and slipped into the driver’s seat. “He’s living with Count D these days,” he said, once they were safely in the car.
“I can think of something else,” she offered with a small chuckled, then her eyes widen when he said Chris was living with Count D, “that’s a change, any reason to prompt that?” she asked as she got in the car herself, shut the door and slid her seatbelt “Everything okay?” she asked worriedly.
“What prompted it was that D decided to break into my apartment,” with the use of Chris’ keys, “and while he was breaking and entering he decided that it ‘wasn’t fit to raise a child in,’” Leon said, complete with air quotes. Apparently keeping his dirty socks wasn’t setting a good example or something.
“Anyway, Chris was spending most of his time there anyway with all the hours I was putting in here, so I guess it worked out.”
Laurel offered a frown, but she wasn’t going to comment on it, it was his situation, not hers. “I’m here if you need to talk about it,” she offered him a small smile and then let it go. She could only imagine if Livvia decided to stay more at Oliver’s house how she would feel about it. “So miss me?” she teased to change the subject,
“Thanks,” Leon said, with a bit of a smile. Truth be told, he didn’t know how he felt about it, so he had no idea what he would say even if he did want to talk about it. He’d never been cut out for being a full-time guardian, not with his job, and living with D gave Chris far more stability than Leon ever could - except for that brief time when he and Alex had lived together. Leon… well, he felt better about that then him shuffling Chris off with various babysitters every night. And he still got to see his brother a lot. And it felt good knowing there was an Orcot keeping an eye on D when Leon couldn’t.
“Oh god, did I ever miss you,” Leon said, letting out an exasperated sigh as he started driving to the coffee shop. “Andrews was the fucking worst. You know, one time he…” Leon started, and then didn’t stop griping about him until he was at the coffee shop.
It felt good to have Laurel watching his back again.
