Mark knew that joining the Network had come with some weird side effects. He had been a woman, he had seen Ewoks taking over the streets in a fight against Stormtroopers, and now he was having weird dreams. He had no idea why he joined the Network in the first place, but at least the people on there had been really nice. He was just glad that he was able to finally spend a lot of time with his other siblings while he worked jobs. The dreams that night had been about living in some place called Faerie that was beautiful but also weird beyond belief. His mother and Helen had been there, but they all looked different and definitely more fey like.
When he got up and went into the bathroom he went and checked his own ears, worried that they would have changed over night, and let out a sigh of relief. Well, he at least looked normal. He finished what he needed to in the bathroom and then wandered out into the apartment to head to the kitchen and noticed that Helen was there. He grabbed a mug to make tea and leaned against the counter as the water heated, “Have you had any weird dreams lately?”
Since joining the Network, Helen had heard so many interesting things about the Dream that the majority of the members had and she had been wondering if and when she started dreaming what hers would be about. As it turned out, Helen had had the same dream as Mark. Born in a place called Fairie raised by their mother with different names than the ones they had in the real world, which was incredibly interesting.
However, it hadn’t been the part where they were apparently part Fey that had gotten to Helen, but the part about seeing their mother. Sure, their father had plenty of pictures of their mother that Helen had seen over and over again while growing up, but seeing her so clearly in her mind had been a shock and as Mark came into the kitchen, she was still thinking about it as she sat at the table with her own cup of tea, which was lukewarm by now, “Funny you should ask that…I had some last night.”
Seeing their mother was completely unexpected and it had hurt his heart knowing she wasn’t around for Mark to actually see once he woke up. It was nice to have some weird dreams that involved her though because it just added a little extra time to what he had with her in this living world. He really did hope that Helen had the same dreams because it would mean a lot to both of them.
He chuckled at her comment as he stretched his legs in front of him, “Oh really? That’s odd because I did too. It involved us being part fairy apparently. I don’t know what kind of weird fantasy realm my dreams are taking place in, but it’s strange. Mom was there though… she looked different, more ethereal…”
Helen couldn’t help but stare at Mark as he spoke about his dreams, which were identical to her own, “I had the exact same dreams!” Helen had heard about multiple people having dreams that took place in the same world and she should have thought that it was possible the same would happen for her and Mark, but somehow that thought hadn’t occurred to her, “And my name was Alessa and you were Miach.” She ran a hand through her long blond hair, pushing it over her shoulder.
“Did you?” Mark was surprised, but also relieved at the same time. It meant they were most likely going to follow the same set of dreams so at least he had one person to talk to about these things, “Yeah, I remember that. I actually just checked in the mirror to make sure I didn’t suddenly have fey ears or something.” It had been a really odd dream especially since his father wasn’t there. He was too young in the dreams to truly know what was going on, so he was immensely curious in this world.
Helen nodded, forgetting about her tea for the moment as she turned more in her chair towards Mark, “Yeah, I did. How cool is this though?” She had seen other people posting on the Network about how the dreams had changed them and she couldn’t help but wonder if anything like that would happen to her and Mark, “Do you think we will get them? I could hide mine fairly well, but you’d have to grow your hair out.” Leave it to Helen to already be thinking of things that, if they happened, weren’t likely to happen for some time.
“Who knows, I bet we could. I don’t know if a lot of people physically change after these dreams or not,” Mark hadn’t seen anything like that on the network, but he also hadn’t been looking too closely. He couldn’t help but chuckle when Helen declared he would have to grow his hair out to hide his ears if they happened to change, “Of course, you would say that. Maybe I’ll just own it and say that I’m really into Lord of the Rings or something. I’m curious if it’ll be just us dreaming about this or if it’ll rub off to our other siblings.” He didn’t think it worked like that, but it’d be weird not telling his siblings about their dream counterparts.
Helen couldn’t help but laugh as she suddenly pictured Mark with hair like Legolas, “Hey, someone needs to think about these things. It might as well be me,” She wrinkled her nose up and made a face at Mark before shrugging in response to his question, “I don’t know. From what I’ve read, it’s only people who are the Network who end up having these dreams. So unless they join, they might not have these dreams.” She picked up her mug, but didn’t lift it to her lips, “Besides, we don’t even know if they’re in them.” So far it had just been her, Mark and their mother. No sign of anyone else.
“Suuure, Helen, sure,” Mark rolled his eyes at her with an easy smile on his face, “Ah, that makes sense. It’d probably be for the best to keep our siblings off the network and we’re the only ones that deal with the crazy. I think we’re probably the only ones that would be able to handle any of this. And I think they probably will be, I unfortunately think the story of our mother will probably follow similar events to this world.” Which was probably the worst part of this whole thing. He missed his mother like crazy and seeing her in his dreams was great, but he was waiting for the other shoe to drop and her to no longer be with them in that setting as well.
Helen finally took a sip of her lukewarm tea, smirking a little against the rim as she did so then nodded as she set it down and swallowed, “Yeah, Julian would probably be able to handle it. Ty..not so much. Maybe. The jury’s still out on that one.” She wasn’t sure how their sisters would handle these dreams and of course Tavvy was too young to fully process something like this. When Mark mentioned their mother again, Helen ran a hand through her hair again, “I have the same feeling. Like, we’re just not lucky enough to actually get dreams about her for too long.” She suddenly had the urge to ask their father where he kept their old photo albums. Maybe she’d call him up later or just go to the house and look for them herself.
“I’m glad that Ty is getting some more help now since the last time I was here,” Ty had finally been diagnosed on the Autism spectrum, which Mark had suspected for a while, but it was good to have a diagnosis and a plan to help him live a normal life, “Yeah, definitely not that lucky. The whole faerie court thing is weird though and our aunts are also really weird. It’s not really the greatest environment for us to live in and grow up in.” He didn’t think they would spend a lot of time there, especially if their mother wasn’t going to be alive much longer.
“Me too,” Helen too had suspected the same about Ty and she was glad that their father had finally had him tested. She wished he had done it sooner, but she also knew that it wasn’t always easy for their father who was raising five children on his own. Yes, Julian helped, but their younger brother was still a teenager and he deserved to be a teenager and not a second father, “We should go over and see them this weekend.”
Getting up from the table, she brought her mug to the sink and nodded, “Yeah. Far as I can recall from other fairy tales, fairies don’t always do the best job raising kids. Unless it’s the fairies from Sleeping Beauty. They did alright.”
“Ha, until they got in a fight about the color of her dress,” Mark pointed out with a laugh, “But I would love to go visit them this weekend. Although, I might head over there today. I’m pretty open and I definitely want to hang out with them a little bit.” He grabbed his own mug now that the tea had steeped long enough and cooled down so he could take a sip, “Wanna come with?” He wasn’t sure if she had a bunch of stuff going on today or not but might as well offer.
“That is very true. Honestly, they should have just made it purple and been done with it,” Helen grinned before finishing her tea and put the mug in the sink, “And as it turned out, today is my day off. So I’d love to come with you. Why don’t you drink your tea and text Jules. Make sure they’ll be around. I’m gonna go take a shower.” As Helen left the kitchen and headed towards her room she thought back over the dreams briefly and was glad that if she was going to be having these strange dreams, at least she was able to share them with Mark.
