Ali still couldn’t shake the waves of dizziness and nauseous that kept hitting her. She knew that it was dangerous but she didn’t trust herself to be able to get up and unlock the door when Jeremy got there so she just left it cracked after finishing their text conversation. She knew that she probably had a concussion, it felt way too similar to what she’d felt when she had one after the accident with her parents a few years before to be anything else. Her head was pounding as she laid down on the couch, knowing she should stay awake but she was in too much pain to sit up so she lay there, humming and naming off the flowers that grew outside of the old farmhouse. She heard a knock on the door and turned her head slightly, cursing mentally as it caused another rush of nausea. “Jeremy? Come on in.” She answered softly, praying that it was her friend and not some stranger.

When Ali had texted him the last thing he’d expected was that she was in trouble. When she’d told him she needed help of the medical variety his first thought had been Elena. She was a resident and would know if Ali needed to go to a hospital or not. And honestly, depending on just how bad it was, there was always the possibility that Elena could simply use her blood to heal her, but that would be a last resort option.
Getting out of bed, he got dressed quickly then simply went straight through the bathroom that connected their rooms, much like in the dreams, and barged into his sister’s room, turning on the light as he entered, “Elena! Elena, wake up.” Yes, it was the middle of the night, but he didn’t care. His friend was hurting and he needed his sister’s help.
**
She jolted awake with a soft gasp. “Jer? What’s wrong?” It didn’t take a genius to know that there was something wrong. Her brother didn’t tend to barge into her room for any reason let alone in the middle of the night. And the longer she was awake the more it registered just how serious he looked.
“What’s wrong?”
**
“I need your help. A friend of mine was hurt cause of her dreams.” Jeremy said, approaching Elena’s bed, his expression clearly worried, “She thinks she has a concussion.” He hoped that Ali was figuring out a way to keep herself awake between now and when they got to her, “Will you help?” He knew his sister would never say no to helping someone even in the middle of the night.
**
“Like you have to ask that.” Elena rubbed her eyes with a nod. “Let me get dressed and grab a few things. Two minutes. I’ll meet you downstairs. You’ll have to drive.” Especially because he knew where this friend lived.
**
“Alright. I’ll be downstairs,” Jeremy went back to his room to get his car keys and jacket then headed downstairs to wait for Elena. While he waited he sent Ali a text to let her know that they were on their way. He didn’t know if she would respond or not, but he wanted her to know that they were on their way.
**
Elena was downstairs a few minutes later, backpack in hand, hair pulled back in a ponytail. “Ready,” she nodded, barely waiting for Jeremy before she was out the door. “Tell me about your friend. You said she got the concussion in a dream...any more details?”
**
“She didn’t give too many details really.” Jeremy said as they reached the car and he unlocked it. While he’d been waiting for Elena he’d left a note for Katherine to let her know that they had gone out, in case she woke up before they got home, “I just hope she’s been able to keep herself awake. Jeremy started the car and headed towards the address Alice had given him, which turned out to be a motel. Following the numbers on on the doors, Jeremy found her room fairly easily and quickly parked the car in front of the room then ran towards the door, which he found had been left ajar, “Ali? Are you okay?” He asked, hearing her call his name as he pushed the door open.

There had been a few moments where she’d felt herself starting to slip back towards sleep and Ali had to force herself to wake back up, start talking out loud to herself about other things. There’d been a couple times when she’d just started reciting recipes to keep herself awake. Anything to keep herself thinking. “Hey. Any trouble finding the place?” She started to sit up and gave a small cry of pain as her side hurt at the movement and she stopped halfway through. There was a small tinkle as glass fell out of her hair and onto the floor as she looked up at her friend. She was trying to sound casual as her brain registered someone coming in behind him, guessing this must be one of his sisters. “Still dizzy and nauseous but I have no clue why my sides are hurting at any movement. Watch where you step. I apparently decided to bring some window glass with me again this time.” She wasn’t going to let herself think about what she’d seen in that dream. Not yet. Those images...she didn’t want them. Her brain here had at least been that kind to her with the accident - she’d been knocked out by the collision and not come to until the hospital. No such luck for dreamAli.
***
Jeremy moved quickly to where Ali was and knelt down beside the couch, “Just lay down. Elena will look you over.” He suspected that the cause of the pain in her sides was likely broken ribs, something he was used to, but he would let Elena decide that for herself as well as a course of action to treat it, “Is the glass from your dreams?” He decided that if Ali did have a concussion then if he kept talking to her that would be the best way to keep her awake while Elena looked her over and he didn’t see anything broken in the room so he suspected that he was right.
**
“Hey, I’m Elena,” she introduced herself, stepping forward and sliding an Opthalmoscope from her bag. “I’m going to have to shine a light in your eyes and it’s going to hurt for a minute but I need to check your pupil dilation. Your head hurts...have you thrown up? Do you know where you are?” She needed to be sure that Ali wasn’t confused either.
**
Ali lay back down, wincing and breathing out as she tried to make herself comfortable on the couch. “Ali. Wish I was meeting you under better circumstances.” She looked back at Jeremy, trying to keep her thoughts in order as they talked. “I dreamt about the car accident there again. In a lot more detail this time than before. Emma’s neck…” Her voice trailed off as she couldn’t bring herself to say it outloud. Emma’s neck had been broken by the impact. And even though she knew he hadn’t meant to do it...she blamed her dad there for it. “I think the glass is from the windows of the car. It showed up the last time I had this dream. The hairstylist had a field day trying to make sure it all got out without me being honest about what had happened to cause me to have glass in my hair.”
She glanced at Elena. “I haven’t thrown up and I know I’m in my motel room. I had a concussion a few years ago so I know that’s probably what it is now.” After the car accident that had taken her family from her here. Just one way her lives mirrored each other.
***
As Jeremy sat there, listening to Elena question Ali and listening to Ali’s replies, he couldn’t help but reach out and take one of his friend’s hands, “We’ll make sure all the glass is out before we leave.” Jeremy was very familiar with injuries from the dreams crossing over, considering he’d very nearly died in the real world after being shot in the dream world. He still wasn’t 100% sure how they had managed to get out of the hospital without being questioned by police afterward.
“Is it just your head or anything else?” He asked as he glanced from Ali to Elena and back.
**
“Good that you know that much,” Elena smiled at the girl, lowering the light. “Jeremy’s right though. Do you hurt anywhere else? Any other symptoms? I think you nailed it when you said you had a concussion...minor I’d say. But might as well make sure we’re catching everything.”
***
It took Ali’s eyes a moment to adjust back after Elena lowered the light, squeezing Jeremy’s hand without realizing it as her sides hurt with her slight shifting. “My sides. Everytime I move it’s like something’s squeezing them or stabbing me through them.” She said softly, a little gasp escaping her as she trolled to roll to make it easier for Elena to see her side. She closed her eyes tight when she felt the tears threatening again.
***
Jeremy glanced up at Elena as Ali mentioned her side hurting, “Do you think it’s broken ribs?” He asked his sister as he squeezed Ali’s hand back, reassuringly and brought his other hand up to run through her hair, lightly, brushing some glass out of it in the process. If she did have broken ribs, he wasn’t sure what Elena could do about it aside from giving Ali some of her blood, but he didn’t know if either of them would be comfortable with that. Sure, Jeremy had thought that could be a possibility if Ali’s injuries were really bad, but luckily they didn’t seem life threatening so it might not end up coming down to Ali needing to drink Elena’s blood.
**
“Bruised or broken,” Elena conformed with a nod. “Which suck but are easy enough to treat. What I really want to do is run some imaging tests, though. If your ribs are damaged, we should make sure none of your other internal organs were impacted either. I want to make sure you aren’t going to internally hemorrhage. So….I think we need to go to the clinic.”
She started packing away her things, looking to her brother. “If we help support you, do you think you can make it to the car?”
**
Just the idea of getting off the couch and trying to walk was painful but Ali knew Elena had a point. They would need to be sure with equipment so she slowly pushed herself up into a seated position, wincing as she did so, a small cry escaping her. “As long as we take it slow I think so.”
***
Jeremy almost suggested that he could carry Ali, but he didn’t know if the blond would accept that or not and he didn’t want her to feel like he was babying her or anything like that. Instead, he got to his feet and held out his hands to her, “I’ll help you out to the car. Is there anything else you need in here before we go?” He glanced over at Elena, “Do you wanna go start the car?”
**
A nod. “I can do that. I’ll call the clinic, too, let them know we’re coming in so they can get some things ready for us.”
**
Ali slowly pushed herself into a standing position, wishing she could just ask Jeremy to carry her but that might make things weird. They would just have to go slow on the way to his car. “Just my keys so I can get back in later.”
