Where: Caroline's office
When: Earlier today
Rating: Low/none
Status: Complete!
Caroline was trying to focus on mostly doing events for charities, fundraisers and galas, that type of thing. But of course she charged a lot less for her services on those accounts, which meant she had to take on other events as well in order to make a living. Which led her to planning an art show with living art. Not exactly her area of expertise but the money was good and would allow her to only do charity events for a few weeks.
So here she was at a casting call for models to be the living art. Which she had to admit wasn’t the worst way to spend her time. “Mark Blackthorn?” she asked calling in the next model.
Mark was happy to be back to work and here in the LA area the work was fairly plentiful. He had used his contacts back in London to get some names and started getting more work over the last couple weeks. He also kept an ear out for any jobs that weren't just photocalls and he heard of a charity event for living art and was intrigued.
He made his way to the call and waited in an uncomfortable plastic chair for his name to be called. Finally he heard his name and made his way into the room and found a blonde woman waiting for him. He reached out with his hand and an easy smile, "Hello, nice to meet you."
Caroline shook the man’s hand her usual warm smile on her face. “Nice to meet you as well,” Caroline replied looking him over as she released his hand. It was definitely a little weird for her, looking over so many attractive men like this. Sure she had always been a bit on the shallow side - especially in high school. But she tried not to judge people solely based on their looks. So this job was definitely a different one for her.
She took her seat at the table facing Mark. “So how long have you been modeling?”
And here Mark was completely used to being judged for his looks. When working in this business tough skin was formed quickly thanks to the very judgemental aspect of the business. Mark honestly didn’t mind though because he did his best to not go into a call pinning his hopes and dreams on that one thing. Sometimes it sucked and sometimes it was really great, but he had a back up plan in case he needed to use it. He let go of her hand after the greeting and moved to stand more center in front of the table.
“About 5 years or so now. A lot of it was over in England though, I just moved back stateside last month,” he explained to her.
“I just moved back myself,” Caroline replied. Having some conversation with the models made her feel a little better about evaluating them on their looks. They were people after all and Caroline wanted to make sure they knew she knew that. “Not from anywhere as glamorous as England though,” she went on. “I was in New York.”
Of course she still needed had to make him do some poses and a walk too but it didn’t hurt to start off with some small talk. Caroline was a friendly person after all. “How do you like being back?”
“New York is pretty glamorous though,” Mark pointed out with a smile. He had been to New York a couple times and he really did think it was a lot of fun and enjoyed the hustle. It reminded him a lot of London with the subway and being able to walk to a lot of places instead of needing to have his own car, “And I like it a lot. My family is here so I’m happy to see them again.” He continued to talk as he went through the motions and did what was asked of him. It was nice to at least have a conversation instead of someone sitting silently and judging you.
He did make a good point. There was a certain glamour to New York as well. But still, living in a different country just seemed so much more...elegant. Especially Europe. Though she guessed that could be thought about anywhere that wasn’t home.
“I know what you mean,” Caroline agreed. “My family is here too.” Or well her mom. “As much as I loved New York, it’s nice to be back.” Caroline knew models were used to this sort of thing, but she wasn’t exactly. She much preferred to treat them like an actual person and have a conversation with them, instead of just sitting and judging.
“Yeah, that’s exactly how I feel. I have a lot of younger siblings so I felt like I was really missing out on time with them being over there even though I loved it. I think they’re quite pleased that I came back at least,” Mark had a very happy reunion with his siblings and he definitely felt like he was doing the right thing coming back, “So, what are the details on this event? I only saw something about living art, so I was curious if we’re doing an auction or a charity or what?”
Caroline didn’t have any siblings so she couldn’t relate to Mark on that. But she was close with her mother. The reason she was back. Now wasn’t the time to think about that. “I’m sure they are glad to have you back.” She would be if she had an older brother that came home.
But right back to the event. “It’s a local artist. Trying to promote their work for a good cause. It will be similar to a gallery opening with some of the pieces being sold. Half the proceeds will go to The Children’s Art Foundation.” The other half for the artist. “Your job is basically to elevate the event and his artwork.”
“Ah, well, that’s really charitable of this artist. I’m kind of impressed. So, are we being painted or just wearing an outfit?” Mark had done an event once where he had been painted into a work of art and it had taken him away too long to get all the paint off, so he was genuinely curious about this. He’d have to buy some extra cleaning supplies so Helen didn’t get mad at him for getting her shower messy.
“Being painted,” Caroline replied. “Sort of like a living sculpture,” she offered. “The artist will have more direction for you.” It was Caroline’s job to find a good selection of models. Narrow down the pool for the artist. They had final say. Really the artist probably could have picked them all himself. Caroline wasn’t sure why she needed to be the one to narrow things down. But apparently the artist was too busy creating masterpieces for that.
“Gotcha, you just get the fun job at looking at all of us,” Mark gave her a playful wink. It certainly wasn’t a horrible job getting to look at attractive people until you had to make the decision of who to use. He tried not to take things personally because there was usually a large group of people also going for jobs when he went to these kinds of calls, but it was better when he was personally invited to do something, “Well, hopefully I get a call back so I can find out.”
“Something like that,” Caroline replied though she could feel her cheeks turning pink. It was a very odd position to be in. “I think you have a good chance of that,” she assured him in reference to his call back. “Thanks for coming in,” she added back to her professional tone. “Hope you get to enjoy some time with your siblings now.”
