WHO: Wanda Maximoff & Peter Quill
WHERE: Wanda's Place
WHEN: {backdated} Early March
WHAT: Peter's triumphant return and finally putting a label on their relationship.
WARNINGS: Schmoop
STATUS: Complete
After three months, it was finally done. Finished. The beast had been tamed. Or erected.
Heh.
Being just another labourer on a job was an interesting shift after running his own business for the last year, but in a way, he knew he wasn’t only another working stiff. Joe, the contractor that had hired him, had seen good things from the work he’d done for Stark and was why he’d specifically asked Peter to take on a large part of the work on a newly renovated mansion up in the hills. Knowing it would take all his time, he had made sure to let both Yondu and Wanda know before essentially disappearing into the ether.
Sure, he called or texted, and there was the occasional visit here and there but ultimately, he stopped talking to everyone and focused on finishing the job. It was cathartic too because it gave him the time to actually think. What did he even want? It’d been a year since coming to California -- OVER a year -- and he’d come so far. Where once he had nothing in sight but his next grift, his next con, his next big job, now he had a dad, a home, a girl …
And yet he still felt he hadn’t completely crossed the line to actually accepting these things were real. Things hadn’t fully progressed with Wanda, something he needed to right, really. Which was why he had stopped to see Kat before heading over to see Wanda. After a quick shower and a change of clothes, he parked outside of the apartment building and sent her a quick text.
(1) Look out your window.
He’d be sitting on the hood of his truck, waving up at her.
She’d been curled up on the couch, writing a paper for class to finish up part of her course. She had exams next month and then she was wrapped up for the year, although she knew that her extra credit had her mostly covered for passing almost everything, the exams weren’t as daunting for her.
When the text message notification popped up on her phone, the smile was easy and instant. She had Peter stored in her phone with his name and a kissy face emoji, just because it sparked that little bit of excitement in her every time it showed up. More often than not it was in the morning or last thing at night lately, while he’d been out of town working their communications had been fleeting.
She didn’t mind, she understood that it was important for him, that his work was something that mattered and he needed to make sure he had good connections. It’d work in his favour later after all.
Even as she was putting her computer aside, standing up to head to the window, she was typing out her reply, why? Have you sent a candygram? but it remained unsent when she got to the window and noticed exactly what he was referencing.
The soft smile broke into a full excited grin, Wanda not even waiting to grab proper clothes before she was slipping out of the apartment and down the stairs to go out to meet Peter. The swooping excited butterflies in her stomach at him being there making her brim with giddiness.
Peter grinned widely, his arms wide open to catch Wanda and pull her in close. Nuzzling his head into her hair, he hummed contentedly for a moment. This was exactly what he wanted and missed badly when he was at the site.
Kat had never compared to this, and never would. It was right that he ended things with her. Their fling had gone far longer than it needed to be and the more he spent time with Wanda the more he knew that this was what he wanted.
Now if he could only grow the balls to formalize this.
“Hey baby,” he murmured, enjoying the moment. "Guess who finished his job and has a nice bonus to spend? Exams done for you yet?"
With her arms wrapped around Peter, Wanda barely cared that she was in her lounge wear, without her shoes and had probably left the door open upstairs. “You’re back?” She’d thought that distance would diminish things, make her less invested, maybe give her time to think on things.
Instead it made her miss him more, want to see him and talk to him more, “I’m so glad you’re back.” It sounded like he was wrapped up and this was him back for good, not just to visit and slip off not just to drop something off or anything. “Next month, I have two more to do and then I’m done for the summer.”
Drawing back, Wanda was hesitant to put too much distance between them. “You look so good, did you have a good time? I know you were working, but did you get some breaks?” Her hand almost automatically ran over his chest, smoothing to his shoulders, and just so glad he was there and solid with her.
She wasn't busy the summer again? There was a good amount saved he wouldn't have to do much and could spend time with her… but that was getting ahead of himself.
Right now, he was oddly pleased with how happy she was because he was just as thrilled.
"Breaks meant it would have taken longer," he answered automatically, feeling slightly bad as he said it. He had slipped off a few times to see Kat….but that was done now. Over.
Glancing down, he noticed suddenly she had no shoes on.
"Babe," he chided, grinning at her. "Your feet." With little effort, he swept her into his arms, cradled close. "Get those keys out, let's go upstairs and I really hope Hayley isn't home."
As much as Wanda totally understood that Peter needed to work, that spending time coming back and forth would make it all last longer, she did still miss him for those months she hadn’t seen him, even if the occasional texts and calls were enough to keep her from losing her mind.
“Yeah, I understand that, I’d rather have you back sooner than prolong it with little visits.” Because she’d just gotten used to being able to see Peter most days, and barely talking to him because he was so busy was just hard.
“You know,” Wanda did snuggle into Peter a little, grinning a little with her keychain in her hand, “I can float now. Powers, I mean,” since she’d figured out how to channel her powers into making herself levitate. “My feet would be fine.” Not that she was asking him to let her go.
“Hayley is staying at Elijah’s tonight,” it wasn’t every night, Hayley stayed there now and then, something that signified to Wanda that her roommate was getting very serious, “We have the place to ourselves.”
“Do we now…” Peter lightly shifted her in his arms and was about to say something more when what she’d said earlier clicked.
“You can float? Damn… you’re pretty awesome, you know that?” He gave her a quick kiss on the nose, and walked into the building, chatting the entire way about the house he’d been working on. He’d sent pictures throughout the process, especially of the bathroom, which he was talking about again.
“...I mean, imported from Italy. He got everything here in time before, y’know, all this weirdness.” The whole world was starting to go a bit crazy. Was a little unsettling, really. He was trying not to think about it. “Anyways, yeah, so marble everywhere, even the toilet. TOILET. Who the fuck builds a toilet out of marble?” Peter rolled his eyes, as he put her down on the floor, still holding onto her hand. “I don’t know, it was weird. Some people have entirely too much money. On top of that, that solid glass shower with that like ….7 nozzle spray I showed you? I got to test it out. That, that I can get behind.” He raised an eyebrow and checked her butt out. “Like that. Damn. DAMN. Why you so fine, girl of mine?”
If Wanda were honest, she could really listen to Peter talk all day, there’d been the odd time she’d maybe fallen asleep on the phone with him, although they were both probably on their way there at the time, it was easy to slip off listening to the soft tone of his voice. But it was definitely better having him there to talk in person rather than down the line. Especially with the showcase of strength, given that he could hold her up without any trouble.
“You’re right, people have far too much money.” There was something ridiculous about that much money. Even if Wanda had sort of fallen into the American way of wanting money. It wasn’t like she wanted ridiculous amounts, like marble toilet amounts of money.
“Can you imagine if we had an earthquake? And his toilet splits?” That would be one hell of a fix too. As she closed the apartment door behind them, flicking the lock since they were in and home and Hayley wasn’t coming home tonight, she turned to catch him checking her out. It still made her blush, but definitely not in a shy way anymore.
“It’s the yoga, it really helps keep things pert.”
“Pert.” Now that was a word he never used but would soon. It was absolutely the perfect word for her and he felt that familiar tingle inside when he considered how lucky he was to have her even near him.
Which also brought up what he wanted to do.
And in true Peter fashion, there was no way he could say or do anything normal.
“I like it. The word. The ass. Who the ass is attached to. Someone who has put up with me for entirely too long without anything, and who I really really want to call my girlfriend so I might just start doing that if you’re okay with it.” Cue casual-not really shrug while he suddenly found his nails fascinating. “And if you’re not okay with it, cool. Titles are just that right? Why put limits on our love? Who does that anyways?”
Feminism told her she was meant to be upset at the objectification, Cosmo told her it was important she be attractive, the swoopy feelings she got in her tummy when she noticed Peter watching her, or he complimented her, or his hands wandered, they made the other stuff pointless anyway. She liked that he liked how she looked, that he was vocal about it. She knew he liked other stuff about her too, just like she liked more than his amazing abs.
Or when he got adorable and awkward trying to talk about feelings.
When he rambled past basically asking her to be his girlfriend -which she took to mean exclusively, them, her and him, no other girls- throwing out ‘l’ words and pretending he didn’t care, Wanda just watched him fondly, a slightly sappy smile on her face.
“I don’t mind putting up with you,” which was true, because if anything, he’d been one of the steadiest and best things in her life lately, “but I do kind of like how that sounds, being your girlfriend.” Titles were just titles, sure. But sometimes it was nice to put a title to something.
Wanda closed her hand over his, pulling his arms around her waist while she stretched up to loop her hands around his neck, “Who cares about limits? We can have titles without limits anyway, we’re that awesome.”
Peter was almost expecting a refusal. Almost. Even though he was positive she wasn’t going to -- after all, in Nine’s words she was the most long suffering woman in the world. Was she really going to give up? And it’d been almost a year ...a YEAR since he’d met her. And she wasn’t going away yet. Or at all.
Nope, this had to be the real thing.
“Cool,” he finally said, instead of all that, pulling her close in. “I like the sound of that too. And just so we’re clear -- you’re it. You’re the only one for me. I ….deleted everyone’s numbers off my phone.” It wasn’t as hard as he thought it would be, in all actuality. “Just you. And I even put a heart emoji after your name, so real deal.” He gave her a lopsided grin. “Um. Also? You’re probably the first girlfriend I’ve had in easily 10 years. No pressure.”
His confession made her grin, a blush on her cheeks, but not in shyness. She hadn’t even had to ask him, or push for it, just… Her fingers laced behind his head, pulling him down and pressing up on her tiptoes to kiss him, ridiculously giddy and happy that he was making that step, kind of a promise really.
She would’ve expected it, obviously. If they were going to get serious, be something official, she’d expect to be the only one he was seeing. She’d thought she’d need to explain it to him though, tell him why she needed him to promise to just be with her, to be faithful to just her.
“No pressure,” she broke away, leaning her forehead against his with a soft hum, “you’ve been great so far, I don’t want too much change.” He was probably her first serious boyfriend since coming to America anyway.
“Yeah? I can do that,” he teased. “Yondu says I haven’t changed in years and that I’ll never grow up, so baby, if you like this man? You got him forever.” It was all said in a joking tone of course. He was in a great mood now.
“What do you wanna do tonight? Stay in? Go out? Spend money? It’s whatever you want, night is yours.”
So long as they did it together, that’s all that mattered.
She knew by now, that even when he was being jokey and silly, it didn’t mean he wasn’t taking things seriously. She absolutely wasn’t taking his ‘forever’ seriously, not right now, least of all in the moment they’d just technically made things official.
But she liked that, having it be official.
“I’m feeling selfish,” it’d be nice to go out, maybe get food or something, but she didn’t want to run the risk of meeting someone he knew or she knew and having the catch up thing. No, she’d rather just stay home and relax. Keep him to herself. “How about we order in? Are you hungry? We can Netflix and chill?”
“That sounds perfect.” Even if there was money burning a whole in his pocket. But the minute she suggested just relaxing, he realized there was nothing more than he wanted to do, than chill on the couch, and cuddle and really, who the fuck was he anyways??
“You have no idea how much I wanted to just ...do that with you, these last few months. It’s hard to cuddle myself. I’m not nearly as soft and I definitely don’t smell as good.”
It was typically hard to cuddle yourself, but the point probably was to do it with someone else. “I think you smell very nice, and I do like having something solid to lean into.”
There was a lot to be said for being the little spoon after all. “C’mon, we’ll get set up and order food.” She didn’t really feel the need to turn Peter’s return into a big thing that night, he’d no doubt want to go out with his friends, party a little, and she was obviously fine with that. Frankly she was just glad she got a quiet night to enjoy his presence first.
