Ford sprinted, ducking around a street sign, panting hard, wild, wide eyes flashing behind him in a panic. “RUN!” He yelped as if it even needed to be said at this point, a book under one arm, ignoring what he was sure was going to be Bill cackling off beside him. He knew he should’ve let Stan talk him out of ditching classes with Bill today. He knew it, but here he was, running feet scattering against the pavement, weaving through mailboxes and post lights, trying to reach some safe zone where they could escape their pursuer. And this wasn’t the first time something like this had happened either.
“HEY YOU DAMN KIDS GET BACK HERE!”
Oh boy. Ooooh boy. They were really in for it now. He kept the stolen book clutched to his chest, trying wildly to work out how he’d managed to let Bill convince him this was even remotely a good idea. Darn it, Bill was way too good at making everything seem like good ideas! How did he even do that!? It was like witchcraft! His eyes fervently flashed back again and he yelped as the old man that had owned the bookstore the two had robbed from came even closer, brandishing a baseball bat.
What kind of bookstore salesman kept a BASEBALL BAT?! Gosh. Though Stanford shouldn’t be surprised. He really shouldn’t. The area of town they were from was not exactly the safest, and of course the shopkeeper kept a baseball bat under the counter. And apparently could run really, really fast.
“THROUGH HERE, COME ON BILL!” He grabbed desperately, fleetingly at the hem of Bill’s shirt, trying to turn them towards a very familiar alleyway. He and Bill had ransacked, explored and wormed their way through every inch of this neighborhood. The two were a dynamic duo of trouble, and generally got into all manner of mischief and adventure, alongside Stanley at times, and Ford could tell you every nook and secret cranny with his eyes closed. If they followed this path they could squeeze through the small tear in the fence, bound over the next alley way and then vanish into the beach where he and Bill had found that underground cave. They could hide there for a little, maybe until that very, very angry man behind them finally gave up. Well. It was as good a plan as any.
