The night was winding down at Pandemonium and Caleb was finally able to breathe. It had been a busy one and Caleb had been hustling at his station. There had been one scuffle and the new security guard seemed to take care of it pretty easily, which Caleb was thankful for. Nothing broke the mood for drinking like a fight in the club. He hadn’t had a chance to introduce himself to the new guy, so he was going to make sure he did before he left. For now he needed to get things cleaned up and ready for the next day. He rolled his shoulders back as he got down to business to get it all wrapped up.
Once the last stragglers were kicked out of the club he was able to breathe easily. Everything was finished for cleaning and he went to throw out the trash. Once he was done he made his way out from behind the bar and wandered over to the new guy. “Hey, good job with the scuffle earlier. I’m Caleb,” he gave the man an easy smile as he held his hand out for him to shake.

Jace had kept busy his first shift at Pandemonium, even getting to throw out a couple of people who had tried to start a fight. He hadn’t tried to get to the bottom of what they were fighting over, it didn’t matter in the long run, he’d just wanted to get them out. It was what Magnus and Alec were paying him for after all. He had just finished one last sweep to make sure everybody was out except for the workers when he heard someone approaching. He knew most of the bartenders, benefit of coming here to support and hang out with his cousins but this guy was a new face to him. He reached out to shake his hand, runes visible in the lighting of the club and gave him a smile in return.
“Jace. Nice to meet you. And thanks. It felt good to actually be able to do something about that without worrying about Magnus or Alec giving me that look.” Okay maybe he wasn’t always the best customer when he came in and saw other patrons getting into it.
***
Caleb noted the runes on the man’s hand as they finished shaking and he gave him an easy smile. Caleb always found it nice to meet new friends and especially those who were on the network as well because then someone understood the crap they had to go through. It was still a strange sensation of dreaming of another life and then some of those qualities bleeding over into the real world and he was definitely curious what those runes did and if they came from Jace’s dreams.
“Are you a Dreamer too?” it certainly seemed like everyone who worked here had that in common, which was probably the best business plan Magnus and Alec could put together, “And what do you mean give you that look? Were you jumping in on those fights?” Jace definitely had a look about him as someone who didn’t really shy away from trouble.
***
Jace leaned back casually after he and Caleb shook hands, relaxing slightly for the first time all night. “Yeah I am. These are definitely some of my favorite gifts that have crossed over from there.” He said gesturing towards his runes with a slight nod of his head. “It definitely wasn’t what I was expecting to happen when I moved out here from New York.” He gave his coworker a grin. “I had a history of it trying to give them a hand when I came in to hang out. My cousins were not the hugest fan of it but…” He shrugged.
***
“Oh, what do those do for you?” Caleb was curious about everyone’s powers that came from the Dreams. So far he hadn’t found anyone that matched the same powers that he and his friends had yet. Everyone was probably unique, but the black tattoos on Jace’s arms were definitely something he hadn’t seen before, “Yeah, I don’t think anyone is expecting this when they got here. And at least they finally gave you a proper job doing that.” Caleb gave Jace an easy smile because at least Jace wanted to help out and this way his family couldn’t get mad about it.

“Depends on which one you’re asking about.” Jace said, pointing at one. “This one is the parabatai rune - it binds me and Alec together. We can feel when the other’s in danger, in need or hurt. Makes us a stronger team when we fight in our Dreams. And well - here too. Although we haven’t really tested it here with fighting.” He looked down at his arms again, picking another rune at random. “This one - enhances my reflexes which pretty much are already enhanced. But an extra boost never hurts right? I’ve got one for stamina. Strength. Senses.” Those were the ones he’d used for tonight. “There are other ones but those seemed the most useful for tonight. And the Parabatai one is permanent.”
“What about you? What did yours give you?”
***
“Oh wow. My friends and I have a similar bond, but we don’t have a rune for it. The aspect of it strengthening you when you’re fighting together is pretty awesome though,” Caleb watched as Jace pointed out a few more runes on his body and he was thoroughly impressed. These runes were really cool and he almost wished that his dreams had something similar because it would be nice to suddenly get some extra stamina or strength, “Damn, that’s pretty awesome. So the non-permanent ones just fade after time?”
“And we have telekinetic powers - we’re basically witches. In my dreams this semi-truck hit my car and I used my powers to break apart my car and knit it back together so it didn’t kill me.”
***
“They fade over time if they aren’t touched up. And they’re always stronger when applied by your parabatai. I’m not really sure how to explain it exactly but they work. That’s what I care about.” Jace told him with an almost cocky grin. “I just can’t use them in competition because it would be cheating.” God knew it would be tempting though. He just didn’t want to win that way. He’d worked too hard to get to where he was to start cheating now.
“You did what with your powers in your dream?” His eyes widened in surprise.
***
“Wow, that’s some crazy magic right there. I’ve never heard of anything like that, but that’s pretty innovative,” Caleb was definitely fascinated by this new magic and it was endlessly interesting to him how every place had a different type of magic or the rules were completely different, “Ahh, that’s very noble of you.” No one would probably have a clue that he was cheating, so it was good that Jace seemed to have proper morals when it came to things like that.
“Yeah...it sounds crazy. A semi came to hit me head on and somehow I just broke apart my car and then brought it back to normal once I passed through the semi,” Caleb really wasn’t sure how to explain it, “It makes absolutely no sense.”
***
“Gifts from the angels or something like that. I admit I probably have tuned out a little of the dream knowledge about the runes. Didn’t really interest me. Here or there. Which probably explains a lot of my grades in high school.” Jace said, any seriousness that someone might have accompanied the statement probably negated by the wink he gave. He’d passed his classes, it was a condition of him being allowed to continue martial arts after all, but he could have done better in some of them if he hadn’t gotten so bored. “It’s not about nobility - it’s about not wanting to waste all the work I’ve done to get where I am in competitions. And the fact that I’m pretty sure one of my cousins would out me if I tried using them. But to be fair - I’d probably do the same if situations were reversed.”
Jace gave a low whistle at the description Caleb gave of his dream accident. “One way to find out magic’s a thing I guess. Hopefully nothing like that happens to you here.”
***
“Haha, wish I had gotten away with that in my Dreams, but it was very important to learn the family history. Myself and my friends are from a very long line of witches - even have a fancy Book of Damnation to give us most of the details we could want,” Caleb grinned at Jace’s wink and understood what the man was going for with his comment. He gave a nod when Jace fully explained his reasoning and Caleb also understood that too. There was something about earning it yourself, “That totally makes sense. It’s great that you guys get along so well.”
“Well, luckily I already knew about magic or else I would have been toast. Yeah, cross your fingers that things stay okay around here for me, I know it can get a little hairy.”
***
“My father there was a lot more interested in my learning how to fight than learning about where we came from. And here...my family dynamics are a little different than in the dreams I think.” Jace said, shrugging slightly. “Alec and Izzy’s parents were the only ones there for my mom after her first husband, my biodad, left. They helped raise me while she went to school and worked. They’re more like siblings to me than cousins. Kind of mirrors our dreams that way too.” He said with a small laugh.
“A little hairy is an understatement. But I know what you mean.”
***
“Ahhh, well at least there’s a happier ending in all of that. My parents aren’t really around that much; far more concerned with social standings and such. My friends and I always had weird parent relationships, but our Dreams it’s like they don’t really exist. So our magic also drains our life force eventually if we use it too much, a really nice give and take, but my dad used a ton of his up and now he’s off hiding in a house and basically dying before the age of 40,” Caleb really hated the Dream version of his parents, but he also didn’t spend a ton of time talking to his parents in this life anyway.
“The unfortunate side effect of living in a nice area, apparently.”
***
"Shit man. I'm sorry. That has to be hard to see when you're trying to sleep. I don't think I could handle it. With either of my dads." Jace might not be the biggest fan of Stephen Herondale but that didn't mean he wanted anything bad to happen to him.
"Things we put up with for good weather right?"
***
“Yeah, it’s not the best thing ever, but thankfully I don’t dream of it very often. And yeah, we put up with way too much shit for good weather,” Caleb checked his watch and shook his head, “Shit, I better head out and get home. It was really nice chatting with you tonight and I’m looking forward to working together.”
***
Jace gave him a cocky grin and a wave. "I should probably do another last check and then head out too." Not necessarily home but out of the club for the night. "I'll see you next shift. Nice getting to know you Caleb."
