Not many people liked doing things on their own; like eating alone in a restaurant or going to the movies on their own, but Poe actually enjoyed the latter. Sure, he liked going with other people too because it gave him someone to talk about the movie with afterwards, but sometimes there were movies that no one else wanted to see so Poe would just go alone.
And going to the movies alone was what he had decided to do today. Part of it was to try and take his mind off of the dreams, especially the one about his mom dying, and part of it was simply because he’d wanted to see this particular movie for awhile so there he was, standing in line at the concession stand, trying to decide what exactly he wanted.
Finn was realizing how lonely it could be going to the movies solo. Having moved far enough away from his friends that getting together for a movie was more of a hassle than anything else, he was realizing for the first time how bewildering it was having no one to talk to. Not even on line at the concessions. And that was a problem. Usually everybody shared popcorn or got entire meals (he still couldn’t believe some theaters have burgers now) and stole fries and stuff off the others’ plates. But now? It was just him.
At the moment he was debating between a nacho combo and a giant tub of popcorn he could get sick on and had nearly made a decision when he noticed a familiar profile in his peripheral vision. Brow furrowing, he turned his head to look and was shocked to see a face from the dreams. He didn’t know the name of the guy, but it was unmistakably him - the Resistance pilot that had nearly given his Stormtrooper squad a run for their money. At least, until Kylo Ren had put a stop to it.
He couldn’t help but stare quizzically, trying to figure out how this was possible. Then he remembered that Rey had mentioned that people had shared dreamscapes, like she did with him. Was this guy a third person from their world/universe?
Poe was still trying to decide what he was going to get when it became his turn in line when he felt eyes on him. Sure, he was used to people looking at him, but there was something different about this and he frowned slightly as he glanced away from the menu to try and figure out who exactly it was. As it turned out, it didn’t take very long because he noticed the guy right away and Poe couldn’t help but quirk a brow in his direction and smirked. This wouldn’t be the first time someone, man or woman, had stared at Poe quite so openly, “Can I help you?” There may have been a few other people between them in line, but he couldn’t pass up the moment.
Yep, that was definitely him. Even while captured by the First Order and in the face of the one guy in the galaxy you really didn't want to piss off, he had exuded a similar sort of sass.
Finn was embarrassed though at getting caught. He rubbed the back of his neck with a hand. "Sorry. You just look familiar." Like from these big "D" dreams, he thought to himself. Not that I can mention those without sounding crazy.
Now Poe was even more amused; he’d be lying if he said he’d never heard that line before, but there was something different about the way this guy said it. It was almost as if he were serious and not just saying it to try and pick him up, “No, don’t be sorry. I’ve gotten that before. I guess I just have one of those faces.” Poe smiled and moved aside to let the person who was in line between them move ahead of him.
"Yeah. Guess so." Finn said with a relieved smile. Not every stranger would take an encounter like this so easily in stride. A moment of awkward silence passed between them before Finn said, "So...popcorn or nachos?" He still hadn't made up his mind. "Don't usually come to the movies solo so I'm in a bit of a bind." He side eyed the menu, resting a curled hand against his chin as if in deep thought.
“Probably popcorn.” Poe said, glancing up at the menu then back at the other man, “I do every now and then. If there’s something I really want to see, but no one else does, why should I let that stop me?” Sure, it was harder then to find anyone to actually talk about the movie with, but he didn’t really mind, “What’re you seeing anyway?”
Finn decided Poe was right about Popcorn and turned back to the other man. "Knives Out. Been meaning to see it for a while but then I moved and y'know, life. You?" He shuffled forward as he became next in line. Half his attention on his line buddy and half on the cashier he placed his order: large popcorn and a large cherry Icee.
“No, shit; me too. I would have seen it sooner, but the holidays happened and well, I figured I might as well see it now before it’s going.” Sure, Poe could have just waited the few extra months or even weeks before it was on dvd or something, but there was just something about seeing movies in the theater that gave them a different feeling. “Where are you sitting? I always choose the back row.”
Well look at that. It was like the universe wanted them to hang out. “Exactly.” Finn said, stepping aside so Poe could place his order while he plucked a kernel of popcorn from the tub and tossed it into his mouth. “Heard good things about it. Daniel Craig is a badass so it’s always cool seeing his stuff.” Yes, Craig was Finn’s Bond. Or at least, after Sean Connery. Because everybody knew Connery was THE James Bond.
"I usually sit in the middle, 'bout ¾ way to the front." He might have had sitting in a theater down to a science. Growing up relatively poor going to the movies was a luxury and when he and his cousins would go they made the best of it.
“Same. Although, I’ll admit, I haven’t really seen too many of his movies.” While Poe enjoyed going to the movies and watching movies in general the James Bond series was one of those ones he hadn’t really gotten into much. When he thought about them, the series just seemed so intimidating and he had no idea where to start, “But I’ve definitely heard good things about him in this one.” Poe ordered his popcorn and a drink then moved aside once it was in hand, “I’m Poe, by the way.”
Finn's eyebrows lifted in surprise and his jaw dropped. "Wait…WHAT? Please tell me you've at least seen Skyfall?"
As they made their way to the theater, arms full of food he replied, "I'm Finn. Nice to meet you, Poe. I'd shake your hand but y'know," and he shrugged indicating his full hands.
Poe shook his head, “Sadly, I must disappoint you.” He grabbed a few pieces of popcorn and popped them into his mouth, “I honestly can’t remember which ones I have seen. The older ones. One of the Pierce Brosnan ones, I think.” It had been so long since he’d seen any of them that he couldn’t quite remember.
“Nice to meet you, Finn.” He laughed, “Probably should have shaken hands before we ordered refreshments.”
“Well, might I recommend all of the Daniel Craig ones. You won’t be disappointed.” Finn said as they made their way into the theater. There wasn’t anyone seated. Finn grinned. “Hell yeah! We got the place to ourselves!” Okay it was technically assigned seating, but he had the feeling they’d be able to skirt that rule without a problem.
Poe laughed and nodded, “I think I’ll look into them sometime soon.” He glanced around at the empty seats as they walked into the theater; a few more people were bound to come in in the moments before the movie started, but for the time being it seemed silly for them to go to their respective seats, “Then you pick the seats and I’ll follow.” Poe had a feeling that he’d just made a new friend.
