As if Jeremy hadn’t had enough bad things happen in his life already, now the OC had decided to torment him with memories of before things had gone to shit. He still wasn’t entirely sure if he’d dreamt the whole thing or if it had actually happened, but what he did know was that at some point during the night he had been visited, in some form, by someone who very well might have been Alaric and had eventually persuaded him to go downstairs where he was confronted by various happy memories of Christmas mornings with his sisters and their parents.
He didn’t know why this was happening to him and honestly it didn’t make him feel any better than he had already been feeling this holiday season, but upon awakening the next morning all he wanted to do was stay in bed, but Dragon had other ideas which led Jeremy back downstairs, which was now empty of any memories and after letting the dog outside, he went about making a pot of coffee.
It was a combination of Dragon’s noisy hallway antics and the sounds of coffee being made that woke Elena, though she never really slept in anymore. Stretching, she pushed the covers back and made her way downstairs, offering Jeremy a smile as she entered the kitchen.
“Merry Christmas. I’m glad you got past the stage of waking everyone up at 3am.”
Katherine has only been in for a few hours, when Sam put her in charge of the bar, it was actually the first responsible thing anyone had ever just handed over to her and she took it very seriously. Plus one of the staff called in sick so she also had to work last night. Hearing the dog ran down the stairs, she rolled over, but then Elena door has opened. .She groaned as she nestled back into her pillow, but it was the smell of coffee that lure her out of bed.
In a flannel onesie the eldest Gilbert stepped into the kitchen mumbling “morning” as she went for a coffee mug.
“Haha. Merry Christmas.” Jeremy said as he took the mug from The cabinet before Katherine could and added it to the two he already had out for himself and Elena, “It probably helps that I know Santa isn’t real now.” He stepped away from the coffee maker to let Dragon back inside, but not before he made sure that the dog shook off any snow he’d rolled in, on the porch, “So, anyone want eggs?” He knew that as vampires his sisters didn’t actually need to eat, but he knew that they did anyway.
“Mom and Dad wanted you to hold onto that for as long as possible,” Elena remembered softly, though the smile didn’t fade. “I think they threatened Kat with actual disembowelment if she spoiled it for you.” She nudged her sister.
“Eggs would be great. Scrambled with cheese? I can make toast.” It was the one thing she could “cook” without completely ruining. Thank goodness toasters pretty much operated themselves.
“I’m not sure if was disembowelment, but it was something horrible,” she agreed with a nod of her head, yawning, trying to wake her body up. “Plus Dad stayed mad at me for things I did on my own, no need to poke the bear with ruining Christmas.”
She stretched, “I could...I could...sit here and look pretty.” She was tired, they can do all the work, isn’t that one of the joys have hanging younger siblings.
Jeremy laughed at his sisters’ exchange as he filled all three mugs with coffee once the pot was full then turned and placed the two mugs for Elena and Kat on the island so they could proceed to make their coffee the way they each liked it while he went to get the eggs, “It’s funny though cause you’re only a year older than me. It’s not like I believed that stuff any longer than you two.” Of course being the youngest was likely the main reason their parents had wanted to try and keep certain things magical for him, “Um...speaking of mom and dad.” He didn’t really know how to bring up his dream from the night before, “Did either of you have any weird Christmas related dreams last night?”
“No,” Elena shook her head, taking her mug and leaning back against the counter, sipping her coffee black. “Nothing weirder than normal, I mean. There was something about Santa visiting the clinic but…” A shake of her head. “You dreamed about mom and dad?”
Katherine groaned as she got a mug of coffee, taking a sip, “I didn’t even sleep, not long enough to dream,” she muttered, but when Elena ask about his dream, she looked up at him, “Did you?” she asked softly.
Jeremy nodded as he abandoned the eggs on the counter and turned to fully look at both of his sisters, “They weren’t like the usual dreams and they weren’t like normal dreams either.” In fact Jeremy still wasn’t quite sure whether or not it had even been a dream, “It was more like, a Ghosts of Christmas past kind of thing.” He ran a hand through his dark hair, “I kind of relived Christmas from when we were kids.”
“Oh Jer…”. There wasn’t much that she could say to that. But she set the mug down, moving toward her brother, setting an arm around him. “Are you okay?” She could only imagine the pain that came with the relived memories.
Katherine just looked at her little brother with a frown, it’s not like they had horrible christmas, but to relive it….she wasn’t even sure if she could handle it. “Are you alright?” she asked him as she sat her mug now, he had her full attention now.
Jeremy was tempted to lie and say that he was fine, but considering he had been the one to find their parents’ bodies, he’d always had a hard time when it came to his parents, “Not really. I know I’ll get over it, but you guys know how hard it’s been for me.” It has taken awhile for Jeremy to properly mourn their parents, considering everything that had been going on with the dreams and Damon at that time. “It was just a shock. To relive that, knowing it really happened and wasn’t just a childhood memory of dream!me.”
They all knew how difficult a time Jeremy had had after their parents’ deaths. Elena’s hand moved soothingly up and down his back. “I’m sorry.” Especially that it had happened on a Christmas of all days. Not that there ever was a good time to relive past trauma. “Do you want to break out something a bit stronger than coffee?” Mimosas or screwdrivers, Bloody Marys even. All acceptable for breakfast.
“I’ll get the whiskey,” Katherine was not giving them much of a choice. Not that she had to drink when she thought of her parents, but it did ease the pain. Also Katherine got to run away when everything happened, these two stayed and wants to be there for both of them now.. “Elena, get the whip cream out of the fridge.” She smiled as she got up to get the whiskey and went to work, making drinks is what she did for a living.
A few years earlier Jeremy would have turned to drugs to numb the pain of things like this, but he hadn’t done anything worse than smoking weed in a while and didn’t even know whee he would even get anything stronger these days. The fact that he’d been able to get drugs in highschool said a lot about the people he’d gone to school with, “Something harder than coffee sounds pretty good right now.” He was glad that his sisters were there and were able to take control of the situation.
He had spiraled in high school, not that Elena could blame him. But she also knew her brother well enough to know that whatever past troubles he’d had, he really had come a long way in the past few years. He knew his limits, and he had both her and Kat to make sure he didn’t slide past.
“Coming right up. You will need to eat eventually. Drinking on an empty stomach is never a good idea. But I think the eggs can wait.”
Katherine almost make a comment calling Elena Mom, but even she has grown up, some, and knew it wasn’t the time for it. “Eggs can wait, and whiskey is now,” she smiled as she got the mugs and made them all a boozy drink for Christmas morning.
