Caleb had been trying to figure out something for a date weekend with Pogue for the last couple weeks and it was harder than he thought. He was getting into the holiday spirit and he was trying to come up with something that would also be kind of holiday inspired. The main thing was that he wanted to get the two of them away for a brief period of time but not long enough that Reid would burn down the house without them. He loved having everyone in one place because it truly felt like they were all family now, but he also missed those days when it had been just him and Pogue in his tiny apartment.
One night the inspiration finally hit him and he decided they would go off into the mountains, rent a cabin, have some cocoa, maybe make some s'mores, and look at the stars. It would be nice to just get away from everything and just be together. He booked everything and told Pogue to keep the weekend open, but refused to tell him exactly why.
Now it was Friday and he had packed up the car while Pogue was sleeping. He went back up to the bedroom carrying a shoe box and a mug of coffee. "Wake up, sleepy head," it was only around 10am but Pogue definitely enjoyed sleeping in when he could and Caleb felt the same way, "I've got you an early Christmas present and some coffee if you do."
Caleb was being a real man of mystery about his weekend plans that involved the pair of them getting away from everything and everyone. Pogue did enjoy surprises which was a good thing considering how tight lipped Caleb was being about the whole thing. It was also nice that he wanted to plan them a weekend getaway, made everything feel serious, which of course it was, but it never hurt to be reminded of the fact.
It had been a pretty long shift the night before so he was definitely making good at getting as much sleep as was humanly possible before the weekend kicked off though he wasn't so far gone that he didn't rouse at the sound of Caleb's voice and the smell of coffee.
Pogue lifted his head from where it was buried into his pillow and gave a sleepy smile as he greeted Caleb with a small movement of his hand, the same hand that vanished into his hair a moment later in order to pull it back and off his face. "Mmm, music to my ears." He shifted until he was actually sat up and no longer sprawled in the bed like some sort of demented starfish.
"It's not my favorite way to wake you up, but it'll have to do," Caleb commented with a wry smile in his voice. There were certainly more fun ways to wake his boyfriend up in bed and they had certainly discovered a lot of them, but there were things to do today. Granted, once they got to the cabin they were free to do whatever they wanted, but they had to get there first.
He shifted to sit on the bed and handed over the coffee mug before leaning in to kiss Pogue. He had to admit he was a little nervous for the big reveal and hoped that Pogue would like it. Honestly, who wouldn't like it? It was romantic AF and Caleb was actually pretty proud of himself for pulling this shit together. He opened up the box in front of Pogue and revealed the brand new pair of hiking boots inside. He had his own pair in the car and he was intending for them to put them to good use up in the mountain. "You're going to put these to use today, that's basically the only clue you get right now."
Pogue took the coffee mug with a smile, a smile that was easily felt against the kiss, before he took a sip and waited for the big reveal. Of all the things he'd been expecting hiking boots was not the thing he thought would be in the box but he wasn't disappointed, Pogue happened to enjoy that kind of shit after all.
"Very mysterious," he commented with a wry smirk. "I'm definitely curious about this master plan of yours if it involves hiking boots and putting them to good use."
"I'm sure your mind can start to work up some ideas," if Pogue thought about it hard enough he would probably put together a basic idea of what Caleb was up to, but Pogue would have no idea they were going to be spending time away from the house. for a couple days, "But all in time, young padawan."
"Now get your ass out of bed, drink your coffee, and we're going to head out shortly. Don't make me drag you to the car in your lack of pajamas," granted he would greatly enjoy that ride, but everyone else on the road probably wouldn't enjoy it. Caleb leaned in for another kiss before standing up. He had a few more items to grab from the kitchen because who wanted to ride in a car without snacks?
"Fiiiine," Pogue said with a mock dramatic roll of his eyes before he took another sip of his coffee, letting that black liquid chase away the lingering traces of sleep that still clung to his consciousness. He watched Caleb go before he tossed back the covers and began to get dressed, fresh underwear first followed by jeans, a t-shirt, and a zip up hoody before on went shoes.
Pogue snagged his gift and with box in hand he trailed back out, the now empty coffee mug being rinsed and placed to one side.
Caleb was off in the pantry grabbing supplies when he heard Pogue make his way downstairs. He stuck his head out for a moment and then emerged with a grocery bag filled with food, "Double check that I didn't miss anything you'd snack on." He set the bag on the counter when he made his way over to his boyfriend. He was pretty sure he grabbed all the good snacks that Reid and Tyler wouldn't miss and they would be good to go for the weekend as well as picking up food to cook once they got there because he didn't want to spoil too much by suddenly having bags full of dinner items.
Pogue slipped his fingers into his hair and tugged his hair into a low ponytail which later became something approaching a bun as the last thing he needed right now was hair getting in the way of everything. He trailed over to where the grocery bag was and dipped through the contents to double check what Caleb had packed.
As expected the snacks were definitely on point.
"Looks good to me."
"I may break up with you if you start rocking a manbun," Caleb teased as he watched his boyfriend put up his hair. He didn't mind Pogue's hair but a manbun was getting a little too far into hipster territory for him, but he would put up with it if he had to. He was never going to let Pogue go.
"Perfect, that means we can get out of here before the kids wake up and try to convince us to take them with us," Caleb chuckled as he wrapped his arms around Pogue, giving him a kiss, and then moved to grab the grocery bag so they could get moving. He was just a little excited about the surprise.
Pogue rolled his eyes and gave Caleb a playful shove due to all the dramatics. "Keeping my hair outta my face, asshole."
He watched Caleb for a moment, a little amused and finding it super adorable just how excited the other man was for the surprise whatever it was. "Well, you lead, and I'll follow," Pogue drawled with a smirk as he snagged his sunglasses and trailed behind.
Caleb rolled his eyes in return to the shove and then graced Pogue with a smile. He liked Pogue's long hair, he made that quite evident, and he honestly wasn't sure what he would do if Pogue ever cut it. They made their way into the car and away they went on their little road trip. Caleb held Pogue's hand as they drove and thankfully it wasn't too far before they made their way into the mountains and finally pulled up to the cabin he had rented.
"Surprise, a weekend away. I figure we can just enjoy this time together - there's hiking, hence the boots, a fire pit in the back, and apparently it's a great spot to see the stars," Caleb glanced over at Pogue and waited to see his reaction. It wasn't anything adrenaline-worthy, but he just wanted to spend time with him. He mentally crossed his fingers that Pogue would like it.
Pogue was watching the scenery go by as Caleb drove them further and further away from civilisation, disappearing into the mountains and finally to a small remote cabin. This was amazing and Pogue was definitely excited, evident in the grin that spread across his face when the car came to a stop. "This is incredible," he said as he glanced over at Caleb. "It really is."
He unbuckled himself and leaned across to give Caleb a slow very appreciative kiss.
"It's gonna be great."
That grin that spread over Pogue's face was worth every moment of figuring out this gift for Caleb. The grin was infectious and soon enough one appearedo n Caleb's face as Pogue expressed his excitement. He leaned into the kiss, reaching up to place a hand on Pogue's cheek, and smiled again when they broke, "I really hope so. I'm so glad you like it. It was really hard to not tell you what was going on and I definitely second guessed myself a lot."
He leaned in for one more kiss before removing his hand from Pogue's cheek and moved to unbuckle himself, "Let's go check this place out." He opened up the door of the car to get out, releasing the trunk as he did, and went around to grab their items. He really hoped the place was as nice as the pictures made it out to be.
"You shouldn't have," Pogue assured Caleb as he stole a final kiss before he like Caleb clambered out and went to get his things from the trunk. This was definitely going to be nice getaway and there was definitely a lot they could get done, not just in the wilderness but in the bedroom as well.
Pogue wanted to show his appreciation after all.
"Let's go check this place out," he said with another infectious grin as he headed in the direction of the cabin. Bring it on, he couldn't wait.*****
The last couple days had been great and Caleb and Pogue had been spending a lot of time out hiking and then using the nights to have some fun in the bedroom. It was nice to be able to be as loud as they wanted and try whatever they wanted and not worry about Tyler or Reid complaining about it the next day. Caleb loved how well everything had gone.
For the evening before they were going to head back to reality they had decided to go drive up a bit further in the mountain and lay out on the hood of the car to look up at the stars after Caleb heard there might be a meteor shower that evening. They had brought some food with them and were just having a nice time chatting. He turned his head to look over at Pogue and studied him for a moment with a smile on his face, "So, what did you think about this?"
It had definitely been a lot of fun in more ways than one and Pogue had appreciated getting out of the city for a while. He loved his friends, he did, but he was sure they felt the same way about getting space. Besides who would complain about a surprise getaway? Not Pogue that was for sure.
He had his arms tucked under his head and his legs stretched out in front of him, head tipping to look over at Caleb and he smiled slow.
"It's been amazing," he assured Caleb. "I had a really good time, you?"
"Yeah, of course. I'm here with you so there's not really much else I need," Caleb admitted with a laugh as he turned slightly to roll onto his side. Laying on a car wasn't the most comfortable thing over, but he didn't mind when it meant he was with Pogue, "This place is really beautiful though. I'm kind of surprised by how empty it is up here. I thought there'd be more cabins or something."
He took a moment to just admire Pogue and the setting before he leaned in to give him a kiss. He just couldn't resist.
"Worked out kind of perfectly," Pogue said with a smirk. "It's going to be one hell of a shock to go back to civilisation surrounded by people." Not that it was a bad thing but getting away from everything and everyone was definitely something they needed to do more often.
He smiled into the kiss, one hand slipping into the dark strands of hair and fingers curling as he wrapped his other arm around Caleb's shoulders.
It would definitely be a change to go back to normal tomorrow, but they had this last night to enjoy this. Caleb leaned into the kiss, reaching a hand back to Pogue's hair, and pulled out the elastic that was holding it in place as he tangled his fingers in his hair. This was probably one of more romantic kisses they had and he pulled away slightly to rest his forehead on Pogue's, making sure to lock eyes with him, "I love you."
The words had been wanting to burst from his chest for a long time, but now just felt like the best time to say it. His eyes were the only giveaway of how vulnerable he felt and he hoped that Pogue felt the same way.
Pogue made a slightly strangled sound at the sensation of Caleb freeing his hair and then tangling his hands in it. Honestly it was and would always be his Achilles heel, nothing beat the feeling of fingers in his hair. Caleb's fingers especially.
He smiled as he nudged Caleb's nose with his own just enjoying the closeness until well Caleb said what he did and Pogue's eyes widened. Not out of panic, fuck no, but out of surprise. It was pretty fucking obvious that they were both really really into one another and they had more than just a few months of knowing one another to build the relationship on but still words helped.
Pogue, especially. Actions were great, but sometimes you needed the words.
It was evident just how nervous and vulnerable Caleb was feeling in this moment, it was written all over those big expressive eyes of his. He wet his lower lip and went all in. "I love you too."
As much as Caleb teased Pogue about his hair he really did love it. There was just something about it and the fact that it was long enough to grab onto really made it even better. He wasn't sure what he would do if Pogue ever cut his hair, but for now he was just going to run his fingers through it.
Caleb carefully watched and he wasn't sure what to make of how Pogue's eyes reacted. He waited, breath caught in his throat, for Pogue to say something. Anything. And then he replied in kind and Caleb let out the breath he had been holding and visibly relaxed. A wide smile spread over his face, his eyes alight with happiness, and then something caught his eye.
He looked up and the meteor shower had started, but in that moment he really didn't care. He took it as a sign, turning back towards Pogue with a laugh, "Apparently we get a show." He didn't give Pogue a moment to respond as he captured the man's lips again, his heart full of joy that they had found each other and nothing would change their relationship. Definitely the perfect ending to the perfect weekend.
