Rapunzel loved Pascal, but sometimes a cold blooded reptile wasn’t all that playful. So that’s where her volunteering gig at the local animal shelter came in handy because sometimes she just needed to play with some puppies and kitties. Today she had shown up and asked where they needed help, which included a bit of cleaning up around the place, and then she was told she could take some of them out on walks. She walked around to her favorite little basset hound named Biscuit and hooked up his collar and leash to get ready to wander around town.
They started heading towards town where Rapunzel would probably grab a drink at a local store as they continued on their walk, but for now she was just humming along and keeping an eye on Biscuit. Things were going well until Biscuit caught sight of something and began to move faster than he normally did and pulled Rapunzel along behind him.
Kara really wished that her dreams came quicker than they did. It felt like forever since she had started and they were so sporadic that she was always left wanting more. Sure they weren’t always great, like the one she’d had the night before where she’d discovered an alien fight club. It was incredibly upsetting, considering the fact that aliens didn’t have rights, which meant that technically it wasn’t illegal. Aside from that upsetting part of her dreams, she had also started training Mon-El, which was ironic since she had recently started helping Billy get control of his flight in the waking world.
She planned to send Billy a text later on that afternoon, to check in on his progress with his abilities, but at the moment she was on her way to grab a coffee when she noticed a blond woman walking a basset hound; or more accurately, it appeared that the basset hound might have been walking the blond woman and they were coming straight at her, “Looks like you’ve got a super dog on your hands there.”
Biscuit finally decided to calm himself down the moment they reached another person on the sidewalk and Rapunzel couldn’t help but let out a laugh at the woman’s comment. “He saw a squirrel or something and decided that it was his mortal enemy. I’ve never seen him move that fast before and I’m thankful we didn’t run right into you in the process,” That was the only saving grace of the situation. She reached up to try and tuck some of her hair behind her ear and leaned down to give Biscuit a treat for finally settling down, “This is Biscuit and I’m Rapunzel.”
Of course had they run into her it was more likely that Biscuit and Rapunzel may have ended up more hurt than Kara, but of course the blond woman didn’t know that so Kara simply smiled back at them and put her hand out for Biscuit to inspect, “Oh of course, I mean, doesn’t everyone know that squirrels are the mortal enemy of the dog? You’d think that dogs could handle themselves against squirrels, but don’t let the squirrel’s size fool you.” As Rapunzel introduced herself, Kara couldn’t help but wonder if she was also a dreamer, because who just named their child Rapunzel? “I’m Kara.”
“I feel like cats might be the mortal enemy and squirrels look like super fun chew toys,” Rapunzel amused with a small laugh. She wasn’t sure what squirrels could do to reach mortal enemy status, but it would be interesting to see a squirrel take down a dog, “If no one got hurt from it I would definitely like to see how that would shake out. I bet a squirrel could totally outsmart a dog. Also, nice to meet you! This is probably a good time to take a small break at least.” Biscuit really enjoyed having breaks while they walked and especially if they involved them stopping to see a new person that he could get pets from.
“If cartoons have taught us anything, it’s that a squirrel could most definitely outsmart a dog.” Kara could already picture it in her head, “Dogs get too excited to really think about ways to outsmart the squirrels. Cats on the other hand, they could probably win against the squirrels.” When she’d woken up that morning Kara hadn’t expected to have a conversation about squirrels and dogs, but here she was, “Is he your dog?”
“You are completely right in that assessment. I think cats would definitely take over the world if they were given the opportunity,” Rapunzel thought cats were incredibly smart and could be very calculating at the same time, which was a little scary but they were so incredibly adorable and fluffy that she wouldn't worry too much about it, “And no, he’s a shelter dog. I help them out a couple times a week by taking dogs out on walks for them. So, if you’re looking for a new friend Biscuit is happy to help out with that.”
Kara was pretty sure that there was more than one kid’s movie where cats tried to take over the world so it seemed like it was the most logical thing to think about when it came to what animal was most likely to try and take over the world if given the opportunity. “Oh that’s awesome. Maybe I’ll look into doing that. It’d be a fun way to pass the time.” At the moment, Kara's free time, out of work, was usually spent with her sister or stopping various crimes around town as Supergirl.
“Yeah, it’s really great. It helps that you make them feel good and then they make you feel good in return. I also sometimes help with doing some cleaning around the shelter as well because they can always use that kind of help. It’s also super easy to sign up,” Rapunzel basically had this spiel down flat. She mentioned it a lot when people asked about what she did for fun. It was really great spending time with dogs even if they ended up getting adopted by the next time you went there.
“I’m going to have to definitely look into it then.” Kara made a mental note to google local animal shelters that were looking for volunteers later, “Do you try to help them get adopted too?” She imagined that it was probably satisfying to see the dogs adopted especially when you had a hand in helping it happen.
“Not really, but I’ve thought about it. I think going to the adoption events would be fun especially when you get to see a family add a new member of their family,” Rapunzel explained with a smile, “That was a good idea. I’m glad we ran into you and I hope that you do decide to do some volunteering.” Anything that helped the dogs and cats have some extra happiness was good in her book and she was sure Kara would actually enjoy the experience.
Kara smiled and nodded, “I’m glad I ran into you too. Thanks for the volunteering idea.” She reached out to scratch Biscuit’s head, “Maybe I’ll see you again, Biscuit.” She wondered if volunteering at an animal shelter was something Alex would be interested in as well. It would definitely be more fun to volunteer with her sister, “It was nice to meet you, Rapunzel. Maybe we’ll run into each other again sometime.” Kara made a mental note to keep an eye out on Valarnet just in case she was right about her hunch.
