Who: Rapunzel and Caleb Rivers What: Movie night and reveal of her newest painting Where: Rapunzel's place When: October Weekend after this Rating: G Status: Complete
Caleb was looking forward to another night with Rapunzel. Especially finally seeing the painting she had been talking about for weeks now. They had been spending a lot more time together lately and Caleb was pretty sure he had finally made it through all the Disney movies, so tonight he brought one of his favorites. He hadn’t seen a lot of movies growing up but Pulp Fiction was one that had always stuck with him.
Dressed in his usual jeans and t-shirt, Caleb had beer and the movie in one hand and knocked on the door with the other, smile on his face as he waited for Rapunzel.
Letting Caleb pick the movie was definitely a weird experience after trying to get through all those Disney movies, but Rapunzel was up for anything and was curious about what movie he was going to bring over. When she heard the knock at the door she quickly saved the artwork she had been working on with her tablet and made her way to answer it.
"You look like you're full of tricks, Caleb Rivers," she greeted him with a smile as she held the door open for him and then caught sight of what movie he brought. Pulp Fiction was definitely not a movie Rapunzel had seen. She had seen a few of Tarantino's movies, but that one had never really crossed her mind as one to see, "Ooo, I haven't seen that one before."
“Always,” Caleb replied with a grin. “But if you’re going to be calling me by my first and last name I think it’s time you tell me your last name.” He did only know her by Rapunzel after all. And at this stage in their friendship he figured he should at least know that.
“Really?” he asked stepping into her apartment. “It’s a classic,” at least he thought so. But it was also a lot different than the Disney movies they had been watching. “But first,” he set the beer down on the counter for now. “I gotta see that painting.”
"I am trying to go that one name route like Cher and Beyonce. My first name is complicated enough," Rapunzel explained with a laugh, "It is Corona. Like the beer." That was another reason she didn't give her last name out a ton either. First names were usually just fine if you weren't networking with someone.
"Not really one my mom would have wanted me to watch growing up and by the time I moved away I am sure everyone else had already seen it so it was never brought up," it made sense to her as to why she hadn't seen it. There was a list of movies she wanted to get caught up on from her childhood, "Of course. It is over here." There was a canvas in her dining room on an easel with a sheet draped over it for the big reveal.
“It will work when you become a famous artist.” After all Picasso only went by one name. Caleb didn’t know much about art but he was pretty sure that was the guys last name not his first. Oh well it still worked. And as for Rapunzel’s last name? With the relation to alcohol he definitely wasn’t going to forget it.
But on to the painting. Caleb walked into the dining room spotting the covered up canvas. “Uh,” Caleb began smirk on his face. “No offense Rapunzel but that just looks like a sheet,” he joked because of course he knew she was covering it up.
“That is so not going to happen,” Rapunzel commented with a laugh. She didn’t need to be famous. She just wanted to be comfortable and enjoy what she was doing, which is how her life was going right now anyway. They walked to the dining room and she rolled her eyes at his observation, “Wow, your powers of deduction are very astute.” She reached over to pull the curtain off the painting. When it was removed there was a painting full of a night sky in purples, blacks, and blues with lanterns dotting the sky above a forest that she saw from the tower.
“I don’t know about that. Don’t you already have your own gallery shows?” Caleb countered his brow raised. After all he had gone to one of them.
He was about to reply with his own snarky comment when Rapunzel revealed the painting. Which of course had him at a loss of words for a moment as he took it in. The way the colors swirled together with the lanterns lighting up the sky, Caleb had to admit he was pretty impressed. It might just be his favorite of all of he paintings he had seen. “Okay,” Caleb finally said grin on his face. “It lives up to your bragging.”
Being able to show at Klaus' gallery was probably as famous as she would get and that was fine with her. She didn't need anything like that to make her life complete. Once she drew back the sheet she watched Caleb carefully to see what he thought when it was finally revealed. It was immensely pleasing that he seemed to quite enjoy the look of the painting and smiled back at him, "I told you so."
“And so humble.” Caleb teased though his eyes were still on the painting. “So this is what you dream about all the time?” Sure as hell beat dreaming about being back in high school and the foster system. Though the whole being locked in a tower thing didn’t sound all that great.
Rapunzel let out a laugh at that comment. “Only in this instance. I don’t lie about how my paintings are going to turn out, but you didn’t quite believe me every time I said it,” she couldn’t help but tease him a little, “And not all the time. It only happens once a year around my birthday, so I like to make sure I’m at the window and watching the night sky when the lights appear. Otherwise it’s basically me trying to fill my days up with things to do. I have a lot of hobbies.”
“Hey,” Caleb protested. “I never said I didn’t believe you. Just that you were a little cocky for saying it’d be gorgeous before you even painted it.” Though she hadn’t been wrong in her preemptive bragging.
“Gives you something to look forward to at least?” he offered. Caleb couldn’t imagine being stuck in a tower all day long every damn day. “Oh yeah?” he raised a brow. “What else other than painting and taking care of your way too long hair?” “I’m allowed to be cocky when I know I can do something well,” Rapunzel pointed out with a light shove against his shoulder before moving to grab each of them a beer, “Oh man, there’s a lot. I’ve painted basically every wall in the tower. I'll play guitar, knit, cook, do puzzles, play darts, bake, arts and crafts, ballet, chess, make pottery, ventriloquy, make candles, and read. There’s a whole song about it actually.” She hummed the tune to herself as she grabbed the beers and brought them back to Caleb.
Caleb raised a brow as she listed all her hobbies. He was about to ask how she played chess by herself when he got sidetracked by the song. “Yeah?” he asked accepting a beer from her. “Are you gonna sing it for me?”
“Oh god,” Rapunzel groaned as she shook her head, “You so don’t want to hear it. It’s basically kind of a pathetic life lyrics put to an upbeat song. I really don’t understand why my life has to have musical elements to it, but there you have it.” It was still strange for her to watch herself in this situation and not be able to do anything about it or fix the situation.
“Oh I really do,” Caleb replied smirk on his face. He walked over to the couch sitting down and placing his hands behind his head, eyes completely focused on Rapunzel. “Come on let’s hear it.”
Rapunzel rolled her eyes at Caleb. She was going to make sure to never bring up any other songs that appear in her dreams so she didn't have to do this again. She cleared her throat before she began singing the song and trying to imagine the music in her head as she did.
There was an amused smile on Caleb’s face as Rapunzel sang. When she was done he began to slow clap, even if he was the only one clapping, it still seemed appropriate. “I never knew there was a way to put so many hobbies into one song,” he joked. Although Rapunzel did have a good voice. Better than Caleb was expecting, honestly. Though he wasn’t about to say that.
“Yeah, that’s the weird thing about musicals, you can basically make a song about anything,” She moved to sit on the couch beside Caleb, “Now that you’re done listening to me sing that song are you ready to finally watch that movie? It’s definitely a change from my squeaky clean dreams to a Quentin Tarantino movie.”
“At least you know what you’re in for,” he half joked. He didn’t want to corrupt her with his taste in movies, but it sounded like she at least knew a little about Quentin Tarantino. “I’m ready if you are. Unless you wanted to sing some more.” He wouldn’t mind that either.
“Definitely not,” Rapunzel knew she had a decent voice, but she was not someone who liked to sing in front of others especially when it was an intimate setting like this was. She moved slightly to lightly push his shoulder with her own, “Maybe you’ll have to sing for me sometime. We can go do karaoke so then it doesn’t matter if you’re good or not.”
“What about me makes you think I sing?” Caleb teased. That was definitely not one of his things. His dreams didn’t even have songs in them. “Let's just stick to movie watching for now.”
"I think everyone can sing, unfortunately it is other people's opinions on if it is good or not. Karaoke takes all that pressure away," Rapunzel said brightly. Maybe someday she would drag him out for drinks and singing, but tonight was a movie night.
“You know, I’m not surprised that that’s something you do,” Caleb replied taking a sip of beer before settling closer to Rapunzel as the movie started. He wasn’t lying either. He could see Rapunzel singing in front of a crowd. Especially with how good her voice was.
"Drinks and Japanese food, why wouldn't you want to?" Rapunzel remarked with a laugh as she lifted up the remote to press play. Caleb would definitely owe her karaoke after this movie was done.
