Sara might have known how to hotwire a car, but that didn’t mean that she knew the first thing about how they ran. She hadn’t owned her own car in over six years either, which meant that she was extra rusty. Now that she was moving out of Laurel’s house, she wouldn’t be able to borrow her older sister’s car regularly anymore, so it only made sense that it was high time for her to find her own.
She couldn’t afford to buy one from a dealership though, which was why she was so glad that Michael had agreed to come with her to find a car. She had a bunch of addresses from Craigslist that she had printed out, and while Michael had urged her not to buy the first two cars they saw, she was hoping that this one would be in better shape. She tried to pay attention while Michael did the preliminary inspection, asking the owner questions when he had to, but frankly, most of it was over Sara’s head.
“What do you think? Worth taking it for a test drive?” she asked, when it seemed like he was done.
The first two cars hadn’t been worth the price. Not even with a lot of work. There was no point in Sara buying a car just for it to break down within a year. Michael certainly couldn’t let that happen.
However, this third car was a bit more promising. He wasn’t one hundred percent sure she should buy it but it was at least an option if the other cars she found didn’t work out. “Yeah,” Michael said giving her a small smile. “It’s worth giving it a spin.”
“Oh good,” Sara said, grinning. Test drives were one of the best parts of car shopping, in Sara’s opinion, and the fact that she hadn’t been able to do it so far was making this day drag on and on, even if she was spending it with Michael. “You don’t mind, do you?” she asked the car’s owner, who seemed a little surprised. Apparently, he hadn’t expected them to do a test drive.
“Uh yeah, no problem,” the owner said, and handed the keys over to Sara. She grinned, using the key fob to unlock the door, and then she grinned at Michael.
“Get in, loser,” she teased.
“Who you calling loser?” Michael joked as he got in the passenger seat. Though he before the test drive was done he was going to have to drive it for himself. He wouldn’t feel comfortable telling Sara to buy it any other way.
“I’m calling you a loser, obviously,” Sara teased, grinning at Michael. “At least you’re pretty.”
Sara invited the owner of the car to get in too, but he refused, stating that he had GPS installed. Sara didn’t mention that, after dating delinquents her entire teenage life, she had gotten pretty good at disabling GPS. She didn’t plan on doing it now anyway, and she pulled out of the driveway.
“Anywhere in particular you think we should take her?”
“Well at least you think I’m pretty,” Michael replied with a smirk on his face.
“You gotta take it on the highway.” No test drive was complete without testing it on both suburban streets and the highway. Especially in Orange County.
“Deal,” Sara said, turning so that she could be on her way to the high way. “Want to see if we can see how fast this thing really goes?”
“That shouldn’t even be a question,” Michael said grinning. “Gotta make sure she can hold up.” Michael had a feeling Sara liked to drive fast in general. But really so did he and it wouldn’t be a proper test drive without it.
Sara brought the car out to the highway, and stepped heavily on the gas, grinning as the car picked up speed. She weaved between a few cars before she brought it back down to close to the speed limit. It wouldn’t do her any favours if she got a speeding ticket in someone else’s.
The price was right, and she liked the way it felt under her. If it was up to her, she would have bought the car right then, no questions asked. But she’d brought Michael along for more than just his pretty face. “What do you think?” she asked as she pulled back onto the street where the car had come from.
“It’s an option,” Michael told Sara as they came closer to the man’s house. “But we should look at a few more. We could always come back.” It did need a bit of work to get it in top condition too. Which of course Sara would get for free. But Michael left that unsaid for now. “Might get you a better price.”
It could also be sold by the time they came back to it, but Sara wasn’t about to argue with Michael. This was his area of expertise, and even if the car was gone by the time they revisited it, that didn’t mean there wouldn’t be other cars. Even if Sara had already managed to get attached to this one. Besides, “I could stand to save all the money I can,” she admitted. It wasn’t like being a bartender-cum-barista paid well. She was lucky that she managed to get an apartment above The Double Tap for as cheap as she did, and she knew that Dan wanted her to only be there temporarily.
“That’s what I thought,” Michael said with a smirk. He didn’t think the car would get sold. It wasn’t that great of a car. And if they guy offered a cheaper price when they said they would have to think about it? Well then Michael was all for Sara taking it then. “We’ll get your car today. Promise.”
