"Maaaaaasooooooooon!"
The cry of her brother's name, drawn out and only a tiny bit creepy, was followed a split second later by a thud and a crash, and the sound of a tray hitting the ground.
Mabel, who had been climbing on the counter to find the best place for the Halloween lights to go for the party she was absolutely definitely completely 100% throwing on October 31st, had fallen off the chair she'd been precariously balancing on and landed on the floor much harder than she had anticipated she would land if she fell.
"I'm- ow- okay!"
Falling with her was an array of decorations that she had absolutely definitely positively completely and truly intended on putting up, ready for Halloween even though it was early September.
Never too early for Halloween. It was, after all, the Pine twins' favourite holiday. And they were of an age where it was cool to dress up again, Mabel couldn't wait.
Mason was nose deep in a stack of books having rented out a ton of them from the local library so he could dig into and delve deeper into the history of Orange County. He had always been a curious person, so much so that he frequently got himself and Mabel into trouble or along the route of misadventure.
That wasn't to say Mabel wasn't more than capable of getting herself into a world of trouble because evidently that was a thing especially if the catcalling of his name followed by the distinct thud and crash that followed was any indication. Concern flickered over his face as he put the book he was currently reading to one side and clambered off his bed to head through to the kitchen where he found Mabel in a crumpled mess on the floor.
"Mabel, are you okay?" He asked, hurriedly moving to check on his twin.
"Blargh," Mabel responded, unfolding from where she'd crumpled on the floor as she fell from the counter. "That's the last time I stand on the counter with socks on," she muttered, pushing her hair back from her face to look up at her twin. She was pouting, and it was obvious that she was in pain; she had fallen rather hard and hit the floor with a thup since she'd been standing on the counter.
She reached out with one hand and wiggled her fingers for Mason to take. "C'mon, Jarman, little help please? I think I've twisted my ankle."

Mason gave Mabel an exasperated look as she shared what she had been doing. "What did I tell you about that?" He did feel as though he'd had this conversation on more than one occasion, but she never did seem to learn. "C'mon," he said as he took a hold of her hand and helped her back to her feet, slipping an arm around her waist to afford her support if she needed it because if she twisted her ankle then putting weight on it wouldn't help.
"Let's get you sat down."
"Ow ow ow ow ow ow ow," Mabel leaned heavily on Mason as he helped her up. Gingerly putting weight on her right ankle, Mabel let out a truly pathetic sounding whimper and letting her brother direct her to one of the chairs around their kitchen table. She rubbed at her elbow, and then her shoulder, pouting at her bad fortune.
She looked up, forlorn, at where the orange and black banner was hanging limply from where she'd tried to hang it up. "I just wanted to get a headstart on Halloween. Didn't wanna bug you, you're so busy with your books."
Mason eased Mabel down into one of the chairs and then crouched down in front of her or rather the offending foot of question. "Let's see the damage," he muttered as he eased off the sock and gave her ankle a good feel and look to get an idea of how bad the sprain was.
"You know you can bug me whenever," he pointed out as he looked up at his twin. "Especially when it comes to hanging up Halloween decorations."
Mabel whined again when Mason's fingers gently prodded around her ankle. It hurt a lot because she'd come down on it full force, though it wasn't broken it was definitely sprained. She flinched away from the gentle touch. "Landed on it funny," she said quietly, and sadly, with a slight pout. "All of my pounds landed on it," she met his eyes, "all of them, Mason!"
"Well," Mason drawled. "Let's not be overdramatic here Mabel you aren't exactly heavy." And that was a compliment, really.
He rose to his feet and wandered over to the freezer so he could dig out an ice pack in the hopes that if he got the swelling done then it might stop it from getting worse.
"All of my pounds!" Mabel whined. "From up there," she waved at the counter. "But- can you- I mean, can we have a party this year? It'd be a good way to make new friends?"
She turned big puppy eyes at her brother, stretching her foot out over the other chair, though she'd have to hobble into the lounge at some point so she started doing just that, getting to her feet - well, her foot - and trying to work out if she could hop.
Ugh, party, with people, strangers more to the point. It would have been quite clear to see the shudder that ran the length of Mason's spine at the thought of that.
"Don't you give me those puppy dog eyes," he said with a wagging movement of his finger as he came back around and wrapped Mabel's ankle with the ice pack. "I mean, a party, really?"
Having hopped into the lounge, Mabel looked gratefully at her brother as he wrapped the ice pack around her ankle and lifted her leg from where she'd propped it up along the couch so he could settle underneath her. She even went so far as to put a pillow on his lap so she could rest her feet on him without his thigh getting cold.
"Yeah, a party! We need to meet new people, and this place is big enough to at least have a little party with a few people... Maybe you'll meet other nerds to talk nerdy with." She quirked her eyebrow playfully, "Maybe a lady nerd."
Mason rolled his eyes affectionately. "Hardee ha ha, Mabel." He was awful at talking to girls especially pretty girls, he got all tongue tied. His last crush had been Wendy and man that had been beyond embarrassing. Less said or thought about that the better.
She had a point though. They did need to make friends, but he still hated parties.
"I bet I could find you a lady nerd. I'm a great matchmaker."
She pouted her lower lip, big eyes focused on her twin. "Pleeeeaaassseeeee?"
Mason pressed his lips together until they formed a very thin very pressed line as he tried to hold up any Mabel's pleading, pouting and puppy dog eyes.
Ultimately it was a fruitless endeavour.
"Fine," he bit out. "But!" And this was important, so important he was holding up a finger. "The moment anything starts getting out of hand I call time."
Mabel brightened immediately, "Yeah? Yeah! YEAH!" She fistpumped, almost falling off the couch but caught herself on the coffee table, meaning she didn't hit the floor and injure herself more. "I promise, Mason, we'll have the best party and it won't get outta hand, not even a little bit."
Mason's eyes widened slightly as Mabel almost faceplanted off the couch and he immediately reached out to grab her shoulders to help steady her.
"Alright, but I'm going to hold you to that, Mabel."
“And if it does then the Christmas party is cancelled,” Mabel promised with wide, innocent eyes. “So cancelled it’ll be like it was never even planned.”
Mason gave Mabel some serious side eye before he pushed out a breath and nodded his head simply and precisely. "Okay, it's a deal."
Mabel beamed at her brother and leaned forward awkwardly to press a kiss to his shoulder without dislodging her foot from where it was resting on his lap. "Thanks, brobro," she said with a nod of her head. "We're gonna throw the best party. Or, at least, a good party. A decent party. For some new friends."
