To say that life had gotten much more interesting would be an understatement. Though maybe not? It wasn’t like anything had really changed, even the proposal had been completely mellow and just part of a conversation. But it was a thing and then there had been telling her dad, which had been something else entirely.
But really, she was just happy and not thinking about all the pesky things like the fact she was essentially immortal and would watch those she cared about grow old and die. No. She wasn’t dwelling on that at the moment. She was just focusing on life.
Which meant catching up with friends. She had already been planning to see Veronica today to meet the new dog, the timing just happened that she was now engaged so that would probably be a conversation as well. No matter.
Arriving at Veronica’s, Clara knocked and then waited to see what the plan for the day would be.
Veronica’s life had also gotten a lot more interesting only in a different way. She still couldn’t believe that her dreams were back. It had been four years. And not only that but they had felt done. But now here she was with new dreams and a dog.
Backup being the sweetheart he was bonded with Pony right away. Luckily Pony was also good with Liam. Veronica wasn’t that surprised though. When Backup had shown up he was perfectly trained just like he was in the dreams, so it wasn’t a shocker that Pony was too.
Logan was out with Liam. It was just Veronica and her dogs waiting for Clara. When they originally made the plan it had been more about Clara meeting her new dog but now there was an engagement to celebrate. Well as much as Veronica celebrated anyway.
When Pony heard the knock on the door her began to bark before Veronica shushed him. Backup stayed silent like the good boy he was. Veronica went to the door the dogs behind her. “Hey,” she said opening it and stepping back to let Clara inside. Her eyes immediately fell to her hand. “No ring?”
Backup went right up to Clara happy to see her. Pony on the other hand was a bit apprehensive. He timidly walked up to her sniffing her cautiously.
“Hey.”
Grinning as Backup ran up to her, Clara just crouched down to his level to pet him. She also was unsurprised that Pony was apprehensive about her. Not only was she a new person, but she was also technically dead. No heartbeat. No scent. It had taken Cap awhile to get used to her and she’d been over at Bucky’s pretty consistently. It simply was what it was.
As for the question about the ring?
“Not yet. I’m sure one will happen though.” Just more proof of how out of thin air the proposal had been.
“So it was spontaneous?” Veronica wasn’t judging at all. Just piecing everything together as she always did, with just about everything.
Pony continued to wearily sniff Clara, but he wasn’t growling or backing away which was a good sign.
“Very spontaneously. We were discussing the current end of his Dreams and then he said we should get married.”
Standing up, Clara shrugged. All in all, it was very them. No grad gestures or proclamations. There had been a lot of that - well more just emotions and drama between kidnappings and rescues and brainwashing and rescues… Just discussing getting married? Of course it would come out of nowhere, just as Clara moving in had.
Clara did take it as a good sign though that Pony wasn’t growling or anything like that. So she let him sniff at her and whatever time it took for him to get used to her.
No one could mistake Veronica for a romantic. So a discussion that lead to marriage? Seemed like a great way to propose to her. “Sounds like the perfect proposal,” she replied honestly. No sarcasm at all. Because really, it did.
“Logan proposed in the dreams,” she added with a shrug as long as they were on the topic. That dream was still pretty fresh after all. It was the one that brought her Pony. “Don’t tell him that though.” Even if he would probably dream it eventually himself.
But back to Pony. He seemed to be taking to Clara okay which was a good sign. “What do you say we take these guys to the beach?” Both Backup and Pony seemed to perk up at that statement.
Clara was quite familiar with Veronica and so she noted the lack of sarcasm and that it was genuine for her.
“It was. I mean for us. Each couple is different after all.” So those who were more romantically inclined? Probably going to do a whole thing. But for her and Bucky? Middle of a conversation was perfect.
“Oh? There a story there or…?” It did make sense that Veronica would bring it up given the conversation, but as Clara did know Veronica, an engagement wasn’t all that expected. “He won’t hear it from me.”
As Pony continued to grow used to her, Clara remained relaxed and nodded at the comment about the beach, which seemed to perk up both dogs, “Definitely.”
“But if you go all bridezilla on me we can no longer be friends,” Veronica joked. Given the proposal though and Clara in general Veronica had a feeling it would all be very low key.
Veronica shrugged. “I said no.” And how Logan would take that she had no idea. “We didn’t break up or anything.” In the dreams or here. “I just hope when he dreams it he doesn’t get any ideas.” Veronica wasn’t stupid. She knew Logan would dream it eventually. But she probably shouldn’t be talking badly about marriage when Clara had just gotten engaged. It wasn’t that she had anything against marriage it just wasn’t for her. She was truly happy for Clara though.
Veronica grabbed the leashes putting them on both dogs and handing Pony’s over to Clara. He needed to get used to her after all. Clara was going to be around a lot.
“Please. I think the trick will be keeping me from just jumping into the TARDIS once we pick a date so I don’t have to go through all the prepping.” Clara as a Bride-zilla? Definitely not a concern. Clara trying to skip it all and go straight to the day? Definitely more likely.
“That’s good at least. And yeah, hopefully not.” Because who wanted to get proposed to just because it happened in the Dreams? Not to mention Veronica wasn’t even the type to be big on marriage anyway. So hopefully Logan knew his girlfriend well enough to know that fact.
Taking Pony’s leash, Clara got down on his level to let him sniff at her as she attached it to his collar.
“Not the worst idea in the world,” Veronica agreed. There was a reason she and Clara were such good friends. She knew weddings were special occasions and all that. But she didn’t think she could stand if her friend was all the sudden all about weddings and talked about it non stop,
With the dogs leashed up they were ready to go. Veronica lived practically right on the beach thanks to Logan’s obsession with surfing. But she wasn’t complaining. She did like the ocean. Walking outside she shut the door behind her and began the short walk to the beach.
“Any other big life events I should know about?”
“Apparently that’s cheating.” Rolling her eyes with a grin, Clara shrugged. “Either way though, no need to worry about me going all Bride-zilla.” And if she did? It would clearly be an Orange County related issue.
The walk to the beach was nice. Not that Clara minded, she too enjoyed the beach even if she didn’t live quite so close.
“Nope. That’s the only big life event on my end. How about you? Anything exciting going on?”
“Bucky tell you that?” Veronica questioned with a raised brow. Cheating to speed up all the bull shit before a wedding seemed personally reasonable to Veronica.
“Other than Pony showing up?” And having new dreams after three years of not dreaming, of having her dreams felt like they were over. “Same old, same old.”
“Jim. But I wouldn’t be surprised if Bucky decides to agree with that. Guess we’ll see once we pick a date.” Because really. Having to go through the hassle of planning a wedding? Who wanted to do that?
Nodding at Veronica’s comment, Clara then shrugged.
“Nothing wrong with that.”
“You just got engaged. Plenty of time for all that.” No need to rush it after all. Or at least they didn’t have to decide anything that week.
“My thoughts exactly,” Veronica agreed. Having Liam kept her busy enough, not to mention some of her cases actually had some excitement to them. But for now? She just wanted to enjoy walking with her dogs and her friend.
