Caleb still didn’t know anything about art. And he sure as hell had never stepped inside a gallery before. But he did want to actually see some of Rapunzel’s work. So when she mentioned her showing he knew he had to go. Which was precisely why he was standing in the middle of a gallery, dressed in one of his nicest outfits - dark jeans and button up shirt, and feeling terribly out of place.
Caleb hadn’t spotted Rapunzel yet so he decided to focus on her work. He stood staring at one of Rapunzel’s pieces. It was whimsical and fun. He liked the way the people stood out against the background and how they weren’t exactly symmetrical. It was amusing and refreshing.
Rapunzel was always excited when it was an art show night. Klaus had put together a showing for tonight and after helping him set up her paintings she was excited to mingle with the crowd and listen to what people thought of her stuff. She entered the gallery in her new dress and grabbed a drink from the waiter immediately. Her eyes surveyed the crowd before she spotted Caleb admiring her work and made her way over to him.
Once she reached him she reached out to touch his arm with a smile to alert him to her presence, “Well, well, don’t you clean up nicely? And what do you think of my painting?” She was genuinely curious and hopeful that he liked them. Some people weren’t very into art in the first place, but made an effort to try and enjoy even if they didn’t fully understand it.
Caleb definitely fell into that category. He had never been interested in art, but then he had never really been exposed to it either. He was doing his best to understand it, but for the most part he was still just finding it aesthetically pleasing or not when it came to art. And he had to admit he was finding Rapunzel’s work aesthetically pleasing.
The second her hand rested on his arm he knew it was her. He didn’t think anyone else would be coming up to him like that here. It wasn’t his usual scene after all. He turned to face her with a smile on his own. “Not sure if I should be insulted by that or not,” he teased before taking her in, eyes scanning over that purple dress. “But the same could be said for you,” he added with a smirk turning to look back at her painting. “It’s unique,” Caleb said not sure how exactly else to describe it, or how to describe art in general. “In a good way.”
A faint blush appeared on Rapunzel’s cheeks when Caleb paid her a compliment. At least she looked okay in this dress. Sometimes she felt a bit like a kid trying to play dress up when it came to looking more like an adult at art shows. She couldn’t help but chuckle at his comment about her painting and moved to step forward just a little bit, “Well, glad you think that. I definitely don’t follow the norm on my stuff, but I think that might be why people like it.” She had received a lot of praise in school and it helped her land her current job. She could follow the norm on things, but she did like doing her own thing.
Caleb noticed the slight reddening of Rapunzel’s cheeks, and smirked to himself. “Probably,” Caleb agreed. “I mean seeing the same shit all the time has to get boring.” Which was probably why Caleb never had much of an interest in art before. Well that and he was never really exposed to it. “I like it.”
“Exactly. That’s kind of why I like the majority of museum galleries where they don’t just focus on a huge amount of one artist’s work. Sometimes it’s just the same stuff on just multiple walls. Nothing against small gallery shows like this, but I like to offer up a wide variety of stuff,” Rapunzel explained to him. It kind of felt like she was trying to help steer him towards enjoying art, but she was just wanting to explain her craft a little more. It wouldn’t hurt her if he didn’t like other art, but as long as he liked hers in some way she would be happy. Validation was important.
Caleb gave a small nod as Rapunzel spoke. What she said made sense. Not that he spent a lot of time observing art. “So,” he began eyes back on her work. “Which is your favorite?” Probably a question Rapunzel should be asking Caleb. But he was curious to know if she had a favorite that she painted.
“Oh goodness… I don’t know if I have a favorite,” Rapunzel admitted. She liked all of them, but she moved forward to study them a little more, “I think this one is a favorite though.” She pointed towards one that was done while she was out at one of the local parks with a beautiful water feature. She had been able to do a more dreamy look to the painting and it reminded her of sunshine. She turned to look at Caleb over her shoulder, “What about you?”
It didn’t remind Caleb of sunshine. More of a pond. But he did have to agree that it was dreamy. “It’s nice,” Caleb gave her a small smile. “You really have a way of capturing nature.” It made Caleb realize he needed to take more time to appreciate it. Something he hadn’t really done considering her spent most of his life in doors on a computer.
As for his favorite? “I’m still holding out for that lantern painting,” Caleb said with a smirk. “I believe you claimed it would be a gorgeous painting.”
“Thank you, it’s definitely a favorite subject to paint,” Rapunzel just enjoyed having an excuse to go outside and do something in nature. It was an easy subject to paint and she was always looking and exploring for new places to create scenes for. When Caleb answered her question she let out a laugh, “Oh my gosh. Well then, I better have some more dreams so I can do it properly. It is going to be good, but it will be a bit of time.”
“I’m going to hold you to that. With all this art you’re exposing me too I have high standards now,” he joked grin on his face. “I should probably let you get to your other guests. Can’t hog all your time.” As much as he wanted to.
"Wow, already an art snob!" Rapunzel teased him before he made his good point that she should probably chat with other people as well and make some sales, "Probably a good idea. Feel free to look around some more, but if you want to leave just make sure you say bye. Otherwise I will come find you in a bit." She wouldn't completely ditch him, but hopefully he found some other art to admire in the gallery.
