It felt good to get out of Orange County for a bit. She hadn’t been back to New York since she moved almost two years ago. And she wanted Tyler to see where she lived, the life she had for five years. She had already shown him her old apartment, took him around her campus, and even stopped by where she used to work. Now it was time to do some of the more touristy things. First up, Central Park.
“So,” Caroline asked as she walked hand in hand with her boyfriend through the park. “Was there anything specific you want to do? We could rent one of those boats and go out on the pond. Or rent one of those carriages.” Or they could just walk like this and see the sights. Caroline would be perfectly fine with that too. She just wanted to be with Tyler. But he had never been to New York before and she wanted to make sure he got to do everything he wanted.
“One of those peddle boats?” Tyler asked, raising an eyebrow and grinning. Those things had always looked ridiculous in the movies, and the image of him and Caroline cruising around in one of them made him smile. But, it seemed romantic and like the kind of thing that Caroline would enjoy, and he was happy just so long as she was. “That sounds like fun, actually. Isn’t there supposed to be a zoo somewhere in the park too?”
“Yup! And a carousel. We can go there after!” The zoo she meant. And yeah maybe Caroline was a bit over excited but she couldn’t help it. For one it was hard not to be excited around Tyler. But for another she was excited to show him around. Where she spent those five years of her life that she was separated from him. “And,” Caroline went on as she led him toward the pond. “I was thinking we could go to the Empire State building tonight. It’s so pretty at sunset.”
Tyler was just as excited to be able to see New York. He and Caroline had grown up together; he’d known her as long as he could remember, from kindergarten right up until now. There wasn’t a lot that they hadn’t already shared with one another, but New York… well, all of this was new to Tyler. A whole new side to Caroline that he’d never explored before.
“Aren’t we a little old for a carousel?” Tyler asked, bumping her lightly with his shoulder as they walked side by side. “I guess for you, I could give it a whirl though.” Pun… kind of intended.
Caroline couldn’t help but laugh. “I didn’t mean we should go on it.” Though she supposed she had made it sound that way. “Just informing you of what’s here! Walking past it is enough.” There were other things she wanted to show and do with him in the park.
She continued walking toward the pond her hand in his, smile spread clear across her face. Caroline had no idea what had taken her so long to bring Tyler to New York. It was much needed, especially with everything they had been through lately.
Suddenly someone grabbed Caroline from behind, ripping her away from Tyler and placing a knife to her throat. “Give me your wallet!” The man instructed eyes on Tyler. “That watch too.”
Tyler whiled when Caroline was yanked away from him, ready to fight whoever or whatever had grabbed her. He had dreamed enough that his first thought was that there was something dangerous, monstrous, that had grabbed her.
Instead, he was greeted by a couple of greasy scumbags with a knife. Tyler couldn’t help it. He burst out laughing. “Better look out, Care, he’s got a knife.”
Caroline grabbed the wrist that was holding the knife to her neck. With little effort she flipped the guy over and on to the ground. She turned to face the second guy, smile on her face trying to suppress her laughter. “You got a knife too?”
Logically, Tyler knew that a gun wasn’t going to hurt Caroline any more than it would hurt him - not unless they had wooden bullets for who-knew-what-reason, but his body was moving even before he realized it, putting himself between the weapon and Caroline just as the man fired.
He felt a sting in his abdomen, and glanced down to see a hole and a blood-stain, though the wound was already closing itself. “I liked this shirt,” Tyler growled, not quite aware that his eye had turned yellow and that his fangs had come out until he felt them brush against his lower lip.
Like Tyler, Caroline logically knew that the bullet wouldn’t hurt either of them. Still she couldn’t help but gasp when Tyler was hit. It wasn’t everyday you saw the man you loved get shot after all. Even if he was immortal. She let out a breath when Tyler’s wound began to close and she saw for herself he was fine. There was a difference in knowing he wouldn’t be hurt and seeing it.
“It was a good shirt,” Caroline agreed before letting her own fangs come on, the red veins forming under her eyes. “Now,” she said to the assholes that had tried to mug her and shot Tyler. “Did you want to try anything else?”
The man that Caroline had flipped onto the ground finally stood back up giving the one that had shot Tyler a look of terror.
The man who had shot Tyler looked back at the man on the ground, an equal expression of horror on his face. As if by some unspoken agreement, then both turned, the man on the ground scrambling to get to his feet, and ran as fast as they could in the opposite direction.
Tyler’s muscles tensed, wanting nothing more than to chase them down, rip out their throats, and to drink them dry, but he couldn’t forget Caroline’s presence or the fact that there was no way she would approve of that, and he took a deep breath through his nose, releasing it through his mouth. After another breath, his eyes turned back to their normal brown and his fangs retracted again.
“Did you see the looks on their faces?” he asked, turning to Caroline, grinning. Because now that he had calmed down, it really had been hilarious.
Caroline didn’t have as much trouble returning to her normal features. Just one breath and her fangs were gone, veins disappearing. Unlike Tyler she didn’t have much of a desire to chase the men down and drink them dry. The thought didn’t even cross her mind.
However, the second Tyler burst out into laughter Caroline did too. “Think they learned their lesson?”
“Oh, I’m sure we scared them straight,” Tyler said, grinning. He was pretty sure if he’d ever been a criminal and tried to rob a couple of vampires, especially before he knew they were real, he’d never try to rob another person again. “No one’s ever going to believe them.”
“And even if they did,” Caroline added, which was a very very slim chance. “We’ll be gone in a few days anyway.” She didn’t think they needed to chase the guys down and compel away the memory of them. Compulsion still made Caroline feel a bit weird, even if she had been a vampire for over a year now. It was best to just let them keep the memory and hopefully never mug anyone again.
“So, boats?”
“Boats,” Tyler agreed, looking back down at his shirt. The bullet hole was obvious, but at least the shirt was dark enough that the blood stain wasn’t immediately obvious. Caroline would no doubt make him buy a new one by the end of the day, but for now, it was fine. “And then let’s get lunch after. I’m kind of hungry now.”
