When Caleb had mentioned the dreams he hadn't mentioned the fact that you'd be reliving your childhood or in most of their cases their very crappy childhoods, memories that quite honestly Reid would really rather not live again through the eyes of the dream version of himself.
He knew he wasn't the only one to be dreaming, Caleb had confirmed as much, but still a little heads up on how far back the dreams would go would have been nice and maybe just maybe that would have saved his bedroom lamp but hey shit happened, water under the bridge, or whatever the fuck that saying was.
Reid had given up at getting any sleep at around three in the morning and had simply tossed back his covers and trailed through to the living room clad only in a pair of boxers and with his hair in complete disarray.
Maybe there was some crappy television on or something that he could watch?
In the living room, Tyler was sat in the armchair with a book open on his lap. He'd been staring at the pages but not really having taken them in. He'd woken a couple of hours ago, freshly wrapped in the abandonment of his mother and the death of his father from abuse of a power that would eventually - in the dreams, and possibly in reality - be passed to him. He sighed heavily and glanced up when he heard the sound of footsteps and flicked the uplighter on, rather than just having the small lamp to light his book, squinting into the light that swamped the previously dark room.
"Can't sleep?" he asked, voice soft and sleep-rough since he hadn't used it after waking up in a panic at being left behind. Again.
Reid would have jumped had he not been keyed into Tyler's presence like some sort of weird sixth sense. "Something like that." He rubbed a hand through his hair and crashed out onto the couch before he tipped his head to regard the other man.
"What about you? What's got you sitting in the dark pretending to read?"
"Not pretending, I was reading, just not... taking any of it in." Tyler offered a toothy, tired grin and got to his feet before he swatted at Reid's legs until he moved them so he could sit down, quite happy for them to return if he wanted them to. "Bad dreams. You?"
Reid's eyes narrowed slightly as he recognised the telltale signs in his friend that not everything was okay. Believe it or not but Reid was capable of some emotional intelligence but only when certain people were involved. People like Tyler. He did in fact return his legs to drape all over Tyler's lap because comfortable and he sort of liked it truth be told.
"The same," he affirmed with a nod as he buried his fingers in his hair. "What did you dream about?"
"I've started having those dreams, y'know, the ones Caleb told us about." Tyler scrubbed his hand through his hair and leaned back against the couch, his other hand finding Reid's bare ankle and rubbing absent circles against the cool skin with his thumb. "It hurts more, being abandoned by my mom all over again."
Reid's brow furrowed when Tyler admitted what it was he'd been dreaming and he lifted himself away from the couch, moving that bit closer so he could curl his hand around the back of Tyler's neck. "Your mom is a bitch, she's always been a bitch, and she didn't know what she had with you. Fuck her." Easier said than done, he knew that, but he was quite impassioned when it came to the shit show that was Tyler's mother.
"You got me and you've got Caleb and Pogue."
Tyler leaned into the touch and nodded, "Yeah- yeah I know," he reassured, feeling the cold creep over his legs where Reid's had been resting a moment before. "Just feels shitty that I gotta go through that again when I've already done it once."
He shrugged, turning his head to look at Reid, "What about you? What'd you dream about?"
"I get it, " Reid assured Tyler as he brushed his thumb over his skin. "It fucking sucks." And there was literally nothing Reid could do about it except be there when it happened. On impulse he shifted and wrapped his arms around Tyler as he was one of the few people he was that openly demonstrative with.
His shoulders lifted into a shrug. "Kind of the same thing, seems like dream me also had really crappy parents."
It took less than a second for Tyler to melt into Reid's arms. He shifted, draped his legs over Reid's and snuggled in under his arm, chin resting on his shoulder. He allowed himself to just breathe, eyes closed and taking in the comfort as it was offered, arm loosely looped over Reid's chest.
"I- You didn't answer my question."
Reid propped his chin atop of Tyler's head as the other man all but snuggled into him before one of Reid's hands combed through Tyler's hair absently in a slow reassuring movements.
"Turns out my old man in the dreams is a lot more... involved, louder too. I mean I'm just a kid and he's really laying into me but if I looked as old as he did at the time I think I might be pissed off too."
Tyler felt himself relaxing as Reid pushed his hand through his hair. It was gentle and comforting, reassuring in the absentminded nature of it. He sighed, breath warm against Reid's skin.
"That sucks," he mumbled, "you okay? That can't be fun to dream about."
Reid could feel the tension melting off Tyler which told him that whatever he was doing it was working and so he kept it up. It wasn't exactly a hardship.
"Yeah, I'm alright," Reid assured Tyler with a lift of his shoulders. "I'm used to my dad being a total asshole."
"Doesn't make it any more okay to dream about it happening again though," Tyler pointed out with a little huff against Reid's throat, snuggling that little bit closer.
Reid hummed quietly in the form of agreement as Tyler snuggled closer and let out a breath against his throat. "I'm wondering when the cool bit happens. You know the bit involving powers."
Honestly that was literally the only thing Reid was hoping to get from the dreams.
"Thirteen," Tyler supplied with a lift of his shoulder. "You guys are thirteen. Even in our dreams I'm a full year younger than you all."
"Well, shit, I still have a long way to go then," Reid grumbled as he tangled strands of Tyler's hair around his fingers. "And you have even longer by the sounds of things."
Tyler hummed a little. "I guess, it's the... it's waiting for the ascension that's gonna be the hardest. Watching you guys be all... super powerful and shit and me just being left behind."
Reid snorted. "Yeah, but we'll have a ton of experience so when you do ascend you'll be able to catch up quickly. " Though from what Caleb had been saying the powers came with a very distinct downside.
Tyler tipped his head a little until his face was pressed against Reid's neck, nose brushing the column of his throat. He hummed again and ran his thumb over Reid's hipbone where his hand and stilled. "I guess, sucks still. Looks like whatever reality it is our parents are dicks."
He paused, wet his lower lip and then added, "What do you think these dreams are? Some kind of past life? Or... alternate life? Since Caleb's powers migrated over from his dreams, there has to be something to them."
Reid's fingers flexed in response to the brushing of Tyler's nose and thumb against throat and hip but managed to catch himself a moment later as he simply returned his fingers to their idle movements.
"Looks like," he murmured with a shake of his head. "Go figure, right?" He caught his lower lip between his teeth and pulled it into his mouth as he considered Tyler's question. "I have no fucking idea. I mean you're right though, has to be something to them, especially as Caleb's got powers and if I heard him right then we're gonna have the same experience."
"Just promise me you won't do anything dangerous with your powers, okay?" Tyler asked, "not for whatever reason Caleb said, but 'cause I- Just be careful. Since we're older than eighteen now, what if having the Power is bad for us now, and not after we dream about ascending?"
Cue a roll of his eyes at Tyler's insistence that he play it safe rather than loose and crazy as Reid was prone to do. "Fine, but only because you asked me to and not because of Caleb and his lecture." He was really good at that, lecturing that was. Reid and Caleb did tend to butt heads more than the others.
"Yeah," Tyler said with a little grin and a huffed laugh. "'Cause I've asked you to. Definitely not cause of Caleb. At least be careful until we work out if it's gonna turn you into a mummy."
Reid snorted quietly. "Fine, fine." He knew Tyler was saying it out of a place of concern but sometimes he didn't always get that from Caleb. They were so opposite sometimes it was a miracle they were still good friends, but hey, he wasn't about to look a gift horse in the mouth.
"Thanks," Tyler closed his eyes and relaxed against Reid. "You wanna stick some TV on for a while or are you gonna try and get some sleep?"
"Think I'm going to watch some TV for a while but you should try and get some sleep." He didn't think he needed to explain that if Tyler wanted to stay where he was and doze off then Reid wasn't going to have an issue with it. Tyler knew him well enough.
Tyler hummed again and snuggled a little closer, figuring that he could just stay where he was for a while. He could move when Reid decided he was going to go to bed.
"Sure," he mumbled, "just keep the volume down?"
Reid leaned to the right to pick up the remote control before Tyler got too comfortable and used it to turn the volume down before he commenced channel surfing until he found something that interested him.
"Yeah, of course."
"Thanks," Tyler responded softly, closing his eyes and settling, already feeling himself getting sleepier. He always did when they sat like this on the couch. Reid made him feel safe, and wanted, and that was something that Tyler found often to be lacking. "Wake me when you're gonna go to bed."
Reid hummed in response to Tyler's request before he simply buried his fingers in the other man's short dark hair and idly ran his fingers through it as he hopped from one channel to another. Ugh, he'd almost forgotten how crappy TV could be at this time of night.
Still, it beat sleeping.
