Jessica had told Yondu that the main reason she’d come to his 4th of July BBQ was for the free beer, and for the most part, she believed that. But it wasn’t just anyone with free beer who could convince her to go out and deal with a bunch of people she didn’t know. Sure, she knew Peter, even if she didn’t want to admit to knowing him sometimes, but she didn’t know the woman who was currently standing near the beer coolers.
She got her burger from Yondu, and headed over to the coolers, wearing a pair of jeans, her black leather jacket over a black t-shirt despite the July heat. “Mind passing me one of those?” she asked, nodding toward the cooler.
Laurel looked over at her, than nodded her head, “Sure,” she popped up the cooler, grab a beer, shut the lid, and then handed the beer over, “here you go!” She looked around the yard to see Olivia playing with the dog, then looked at the other woman, “I’m Laurel,” she had no trouble introducing herself.
“Friend of Yondu?” she asked, she didn’t want to assume since Peter lived there as well.
“Jessica,” Jessica said by way of introduction, taking the beer and cracking it open. She took a long swig, only drinking half the beer before coming up for air.
There was a bit of a smile, barely perceivable except in the softening of Jessica’s features, at Laurel’s question. “Yeah,” she said. “Peter too,” kind of. He was annoying, but a bit like an annoying puppy. “And you?” She didn’t seem like Peter’s type, but then, Jessica could always be wrong about that.
“Both,” she answered, “When OC was having one of its moments, I was tethered to Yondu, so Olivia,” her hand pointed to the little girl running around, “and I spent the weekend here till we were able to be free from each other,” She chuckled softly, “they kinda became family to me.”
It was true, Peter was the little brother, she never wanted and Yondu was like an Uncle to her.. “Olivia loves them both, though I think Peter might be the biggest kid I know.”
Jessica could remember when she’d been stuck with Veronica during that time. It had actually worked out pretty well, as far as she was concerned. Veronica had become something of a friend to her, and they had a lot in common. They’d been able to help one another with each other’s PI cases too. But she felt a pang of jealousy at the idea of Yondu being stuck with this beautiful woman all weekend. She wondered if anything had happened, but she wasn’t going to ask. It wasn’t her business.
“You’re telling me,” Jessica said. “He showed up at my apartment one night with alcoholic slurpees.” She rolled her eyes. “I haven’t had alcoholic slurpees since high school. It’s no wonder your kid gets along with him.” She could see it even now, with Peter running around with Olivia on his shoulders, the dog nipping at their heels. It was almost too wholesome.
“So, you and Peter have never…?”
Laurel gasp, it was jokingly, “You get alcoholic slurpees?” Laurel shook her head, “All I get is a mouthy kid after we leave him and Yondu. I’m going to have to complain about that.” She chuckled softly, shaking her head, and took a sip of her beer, nearly choking when Jessica and then shook her head.
“No...he’s like the older/younger brother I never knew I needed,” Laurel told her, “But if I was a little reckless, kidless, solid maybe,” she joked, “he is handsome to look at and makes me laugh.” She smiled, “I adore people who make me laugh.” She looked over at her daughter, just keeping an eye on her. “Are you and Peter involved? Was the alcoholic slurpees a romantic gesture, cause I will talk to him about how is game is embarrassing!”
“Yeah, he wouldn’t be my first choice of a babysitter,” Jessica said wryly. Peter never did seem entirely G-rated.
Jessica almost laughed when Laurel asked if she and Peter were an item. “No, he’s not my type,” she said. He was a like a big, bright shiny puppy, and was way too… cheery for Jessica, to put it mildly. He was the kind of guy Jessica might have slept with and never saw again, but that was about it. “What about you and Yondu?” she asked, a too-casual tone on her voice, and she took another gulp from her beer.
“He’s good with her, might not be the first choice, but I know if I need him, Peter will be there.” He had proved it before, Peter’s a good guy, just had bad breaks in life. Laurel widen widen to the Yondu question, “No,” she said instantly, “He’s like an Uncle to me, when Olivia and I was stuck with him. He could have complained, but he took it in strive. Afterwards, Olivia has to come see him, but I think she’s using him for the dog,” she chuckled
“Those two really filled in some holes i had, that I didn't know I needed filling, they are truly like family to me,” she said softly, then she smiled at Jessica, “he’s the opposite of Peter is that your type?” Laurel was cop, she didn’t beat around the bush.
“Yeah, I’m just using him for the dog too,” Jessica said flatly, a barely perceivably curl to her lips being all that gave away the joke. When Laurel turned the question back at her, Jessica quickly finished off the rest of her beer and ducked down to fish another one out of the cooler.
She wasn’t really sure how she should answer. She and Yondu were, well, more than friends, but they were less than boyfriend and girlfriend, and as far as Jessica was concerned, that’s how she liked it. She cracked her next beer, and took a gulp. “He’s alright,” she said after a moment.
Laurel offered a chuckle to the dog remark, nodded her head, “it is a cute dog,” she shrugged a shoulder and then noticed how Jessica stalled a little, so there was something there and she was happy for Yondu, he needed a little fun in his life. “So…” she paused for a moment, “What do you do?” than she laughed out how tacky that sounded, “Sorry,” she said, “Small talk is weird for me, I spend all my time at work or with her.”
Jessica shrugged. “I don’t really do small talk either,” she said. She understood how it went. Maybe not the spending most of her time with a small child part of it, but Jessica generally didn’t enjoy meeting new people. “I’m a private investigator. Alias Investigations.”
“I think I’ve heard of Alias…” she paused for a moment, trying to think of where, but it didn’t come to mind, “I think it was perhaps at work, I’m a detective,” Laurel offered as she waved her daughter as Olivia chase the dog around the yard.
“I’ve done some work with the police,” Jessica said. Not a lot but some. She and the police department didn’t exactly have the best relationship. “How long have you been with the department? I don’t think I’ve seen you there before.” Of course, Jessica hadn’t actually had to go to the police department in a while, and she generally didn’t stick around if she could help it.
“I came in about two years ago, I was beat cop, now I’m a detective,” she said with ease and a smile, “My dad was with department as well, Quentin Lance, but he passed two years ago,” she explained, perhaps Jessica worked with him, Dad always had connections with different people.
"I’m sorry to hear that,” Jessica said, and while she didn’t let too much emotion creep into her voice, she meant it. She knew what it was like to lose her parents. “That would’ve been before I moved here. I got here about a year and a half ago.”
“It’s okay,” she said with a nod of her head, but offered a small smile for the words She hated when people did that, but she would never say that out loud. “Ah, okay,” she said looked over at her, “Do you know Leon?” she asked.
"Orcot? Unfortunately," Jessica muttered. She'd only met the man once or twice, but he didn't like PIs and he didn't bother trying to hide it. "I did some work with an Officer Hopps for a little while. She was okay."
“I’m his partner,” she said with a shrug, maybe that’s where she heard her name. “I don’t think we’ve crossed paths yet.” Laurel really stuck to herself and Leon, perhaps she should branch out more.
“My condolences,” Jessica muttered. She could barely stand being in the same room as the guy, she couldn’t imagine how anyone could deal with being his partner day in and day out. “I haven’t heard from her in a while. She might have transferred out.” It would have been a shame if she had; Officer Hopps had been one of the good ones. “Guess I’ll just have to call you if I need to get the police involved in one of my cases instead.”
After all, if she was friends with Yondu and Peter, she couldn’t be so bad, even if she was a cop.
Laurel nodded her head, she slid her hand in a pocket, and then handed Jessica a card, “Sure,” she told her, “if you need help with anything, give me a call.” She smiled at her and than back to Olivia who was now rolling on the ground with the dog. “I should go stop that,” she shook her head, “it was nice to meet you”
Jessica took the card, giving it a cursory glance before slipping it into the pocket of her leather jacket. “I’ll do that,” Jessica said. She generally avoided talking to the police, but she knew that sometimes she had to. It would be nice to have a cop that didn’t immediately assume that she was the guilty party to call when she did. “You too.”
