They were following the crowd that was walking out of the theaters and Isobel turned to Maria, "thanks for this," she told her friend as she moved to toss her popcorn container and drink, "I didn't realize how much I needed this." It was the truth, Isobel seemed to get lost within her work, even after hours that she barely took time to do something fun, especially with friends.
That's why when Maria called for a Girls Night, she was all in. Granted girls night use to be getting high or going bar hopping when they were younger, but just going to a movie now eased Isobel who was always uptight.
"Wanna go get dinner or a drink?" she offered, not really wanting the night to end yet.
Maria did enjoy getting out of the bar sometimes and spending time with Isobel. Maria did enjoy a night out drinking and partying, but sometimes it was just nice to take it easy with old friends.
“We could head back to the Wild Pony,” Maria said. It was a Monday so the bar had closed early, but that was the perks of owning her own bar. The bar was open whenever she wanted it to be.
Isobel nodded her head in agreement, “I would like that,” she told her with a nod of her head, sometimes you just need a night with the girls or girl as it was. “Still got the karaoke machine?” she asked, because right now she felt like she could get some songs in.
Being a top notch lawyer, Isobel kept her private life, well private, she came off uptight, but really Isobel around the right people could be quite fun. “Let's do that,” she told her friend with a smile.
“I think I’ve got it collecting dust somewhere in the back,” Maria said, grinning. She hadn’t really used it since she’d hired a live band to do Saturday Night karaoke, but she was pretty sure that it still worked. “I’ll go get it,” she said, and headed into the back room. It didn’t take her long to find it, and she was on the stage shortly after hooking it up.
As Maria looked for it, Isobel just mainly wander around the bar, looking at the decorations, she honestly hadn’t seen some of them before. When Maria came back out with it, she smiled and head over to her. “Anything I can do to help?” she offered, even though Isobel really wouldn’t have a clue what to do.
“You can pour us a couple of drinks,” Maria said with a wink as she started to hook up the karaoke machine. She didn’t generally let anyone pour their own drinks, but Isobel was one of her best friends and it wasn’t as if there was anyone else in the bar right now.
“On it,” she said with a smile, “what you feeling tonight?” she asked as she headed to the bar, opening the side door and walking in, She looked at the wall of the liquor, debating if she wanted liquor or wine,.what was she feeling tonight? She looked over her shoulder at her best friend, waiting for an answer and then she’ll decide from there.
Maria thought about it for a moment while she frowned at the karaoke machine, trying to remember which cables went where. “I think tonight’s a wine night,” Maria said after a moment. She, at least, wasn’t looking to get hammered.
“Perfect!” Isobel proclaim as she bent down to pull out the wine, “red fine?” she asked as she uncorked the bottle, giving it a moment to breath as she grabbed the glasses. She than poured the wine, swirling it and taking a sip of it, “How is your mom?”
“Red’s perfect,” Maria said, and connected the last cable. She turned on the system, and then headed to the bar for her glass of wine while they waited for it to boot up.
Maria smiled at Isobel’s question, not letting how much it bothered her show on her face. It was really heartbreaking, watching her mom slowly becoming a shell of the vibrant woman that she once had been, and somedays Maria felt like she was barely holding on. “Oh, you know Mimi,” she said, lightly. “There’s not much that can get her down for long. She’s just as energetic as she’s ever been.”
“You lie,” Isobel told her, “I’m a lawyer,” she pointed out, “I can tell, but tonight we drink and I will not press the issue,” She moved her glass to clink with Marias and took a long sip. Grabbing the bottle and her glass she walked over to the other side of the bar, “so miss thang,” she said trying to move past the topic, “What will you be singing tonight?”
Maria gave Isobel a bit of a smile, glad she wasn’t going to push it. Maria never had been good at showing her vulnerable side, not even to her closest friends. “Do you have any requests?”
She snapped her fingers, “what was the song, what’s going on?” she frowned “it had that chorus “hey yeah yeah” She smiled, “What’s up!” that was it...right? She doubted herself for a moment, “I think that’s what it was called.”,
“Ah, 4 Non Blondes,” Maria said knowingly. “Always a classic. I think,” Maria said, taking a sip of her wine and looking over the rim of her glass, “that we should make a duet of it.”
“I’m good with it,” she remarked with a smile, “only you sing better than I.” Isobel sat the bottle down on the table closest to the stage and took a long gulp of her wine, “let's do this!”
