I like how casual she sounded
Who: Carol, Diana and Kitty
What: Danger Room Shenanigans and malfunctions
Where: Gym, then the Jean Grey Outreach Center
When: recent
Status: Complete
Rating: PG-13
Diana had gone to the gym to workout for a while. After all, she had to keep herself in shape. It was a good routine to have, honestly, especially for a warrior like her. She was dressed in a tanktop and shorts and she had her hair in a ponytail. Several people eyed her when she headed over to the weight section, deciding to start with handheld weights and do bicep curls. The bench pressing would come later.
Now, Diana could pick up the entire rack of weights and not even break a sweat, but considering she wasn’t trying to blow people’s minds, she opted for a more reasonable weight. It was a weight that would compliment the muscle tone she had on her arms and shoulders.
Carol had her hair tied back in a tail, and had opted for sweat pants and a tank top as she worked on a punching bag. Sometimes it was better to hit a punching bag instead of a person, even when that person had offered training and sparring lessons, and she didn’t want to bother Colleen all the time.
Plus she could visualize who the punching bag was and that was always fun.
When one blow sent the bag further than it really should be going, she caught a glimpse of a well built woman at the weights. The bag swung back and smacked her in the face and chest.
Diana was the very definition of an Amazon, even without people knowing that she was, actually, an Amazon. Tall, muscular, she was the type that tended to draw attention when she entered a room. As it was, while she was doing her bicep curls, she was glancing around, doing a little people-watching of her own as she worked out.
That was how she spotted the woman on the punching bag...who got her attention by how far the punching bag swung after getting hit. Though Diana flinched a little when the bag swung back and hit the woman when she was clearly distracted. Setting the weights down, Diana moved closer to the woman.
“Are you alright?” She asked, knowing that a punching bag could certainly hurt when one got hit by one.
Kitty was over on the treadmills ,oogling her girlfriend, though she sighed in disappointment when Diana left the weights.
Carol grimaced, embarrassed. She rested her hand on the bag and gave Diana a sheepish grin. “Yeah, yeah, I’m fine. Got a little distracted in my thoughts.”
And also by those amazon biceps and amazing butt, but Carol was too polite to just blurt that out, unlike some other people.
Later, Diana would make certain to flex more just for Kitty’s benefit. But for the moment, she was concerned about the woman who got hit by the punching bag. Hopefully she didn’t have a broken nose or anything.
“Ah, that does happen sometimes,” she responded with a chuckle.
Kitty had never blurted that out in public thankyouverymuch.
Carol rolled her shoulders, settling the bag and falling back into prime punching position. She jabbed, hitting it in rapid succession and no she wasn’t showing off and okay she was.
Except she hit the bag so hard the chain snapped and it went crashing into the wall.
Sometimes Diana felt that Kitty could only barely keep herself from blurting such things in public. But it only made her girlfriend all the more endearing, honestly.
As the punching bag went crashing into the wall, Diana’s eyebrows shot up to her hairline. “You have quite the punch there. I wonder if it’s equal to mine,” she commented, looking back at the blonde woman with a new outlook. Was this woman a Dreamer?
And, more importantly, could she attempt to test just how strong she was when sparring with this woman?
Carol looked down at her fist, both eyebrows raised. There hadn’t been any glowing, but now that she thought about it she focused on that feeling, that energy that rippled through her. Her skin turned red, as though fire were burning inside her, before the energy dissipated. There was a wild, joyous look on her face as she smacked her palms together repeatedly, “Come on come on do something!!”
Well, that certainly answered any lingering questions Diana may have had on if this woman was a Dreamer or not. She noticed the skin turning red, and she quickly glanced around to see if anyone was looking over here and had noticed. Her gaze lingered on Kitty, mostly to see if she noticed this as well.
“So it would seem you, too, have powers. Perhaps this isn’t the best place to draw them out?” Diana stated, noting how excited the woman seemed to be. If she wanted to test her powers, a public gym was not the place to do so.
Kitty raised her eyebrows, but made no move to come over. Glowing people? Probably best to let the tank deal with at first.
Carol glanced around, then look at Diana and smiled sheepishly, eyes crinkling as she did so. “Uh. You’re probably right.”
The buff woman had powers; okay, Carol could deal with that, she’d met a woman who could pick up a car.
And Diana was definitely a tank, so she could most likely handle whatever power this woman had. And Diana had a feeling it was a lot of power. Which was enticing to her because didn’t actually know how strong or powerful she really was. Sure, Kal-El had put her to the test when they’d resurrected him and he hadn’t been in his right mind and attacked them, but she’d been able to withstand him. She’d exchanged headbutts with him, and even when he’d headbutted her into the ground, she’d gotten back up relatively quickly. Which couldn’t exactly be said for Bruce or Barry. Arthur could take a hit, but even he wasn’t quite on the same level as Diana was.
Then again, it’s difficult to compare to a demigoddess whose father was Zeus himself.
“I know a place where you could test your ability without drawing unwanted attention, if you’d be interested.” And then Diana remembered her manners. “I’m Diana,” she introduced herself, holding her hand out to the other woman.
“Carol,” She took Diana’s hand. “And I’m interested.” In more than just testing out her powers, actually, but the testing out her powers thing came first.
She knew how dangerous they could be in her dreams, so there was that element too. If she couldn’t control them…
“Did you drive here?” Diana would be happy to give her a ride, of course. But it was also easy enough to have Carol follow her there. This would be intriguing, she hadn’t actually offered to test out someone’s powers like this yet. Luckily for Diana, it was next to impossible to kill her.
She could get injured, but so long as she remained the demi-goddess of her first Dreams, this wouldn’t be difficult. Though if she turned out to be more human like in her current Dreams, there would be a problem.
“Yeah,” Carol glanced towards the front of the building even if she couldn’t exactly see her motorcycle from here. She looked back at Diana and grinned. “I drove here, but I can follow you pretty easily.”
Kitty chose then to slip up next to Diana and very obviously put her arm around the taller woman’s waist, her expression peak feline canary.
Carol hid her disappointment well. “So where is this place?”
Diana responded with the location of Logan’s training facility, then looked down at Kitty when she came up beside her. “I was going to show Logan’s training facility here to Carol,” she told her. A subtle way of noting this woman seemed to be one of them without non-Dreams around them wondering what they were talking about.
She looked back to Carol. “It’s not that far from here, but I think you’ll like the facility.”
“Cool.” Kitty nodded at Carol, then at her girlfriend. “Sounds like it might be fun actually. Gives us a chance to really show off.”
And to oogle her girlfriend some more while also impressing a stranger herself.
Except Kitty knew full damn well who Carol Fucking Danvers was. Long, involved history with the X-men, assuming she was even that Carol.
“It would certainly be fun,” Diana said with a smile. She was itching to see just how strong she was, how much she could take, and so forth. Pitting herself against Carol might help provide that answer. Or at least a better idea of an answer than not knowing even an inkling of knowing the answer.
Kitty gathered up her water bottle and Diana’s towel, and then ushered both women out of the gym and to her car. The quicker they got there the quicker they could get this over with. She was as curious as Diana on if the two women could match each other, though she thought Diana had the advantage for now.
Once Carol was fully unlocked though, it was anyone’s game.
Carol spent the drive chatting both women up, curious as to how they met and what their day jobs were.
However things went, Diana hoped to at least have a better idea of what she was capable of. It was probably a good thing that she tended to take her gauntlets with her wherever she went. After all, one never knew when Orange County would get invaded and she’d need to fight. Her sword was also hidden under the backseat, and her shield was in the trunk. Because Wonder Woman always traveled prepared.
She was more than happy to answer Carol’s questions on the way, while asking her own in return. Getting to know each other.
Once they were there, Diana pulled her gauntlets out of the glove compartment, sliding them on as she got out of the car.
“Here we are,” she said with a smile.
“Doesn’t look like much,” Carol said, though with an undercurrent tone of ‘I know looks can be deceiving.’
“Yeah, wait until you see the underground.” Kitty lead them towards a shed, punching in a code. The low tech door swung open, revealing a high tech door. Behind the door was a stainless steel elevator. “After you, ladies?”
Diana heard the undercurrent tone in Carol’s voice and she smirked a bit. “Just wait until you see the inside. It can be a bit mind-blowing.” Diana may have had slightly too much glee in saying that before she stepped into the elevator and waited for the others before the elevator descended.
Mind blowing? Carol wasn’t so sure about that, it took a lot for her mind to be blown.
The elevator doors opened to a futuristic interior corridor. Kitty led them to one room and tapped a control. “Lets try...dinosaurs.”
“Dinosaurs?” Carol asked.
The door swung open to reveal a dense, prehistoric jungle. Kitty turned and grinned at her. “Dinosaurs.”
The sheer capability of this place was mind-blowing in and of itself. Diana had to wonder if Bruce would try to build his own version of this place if he was here. Something to help keep them all training and potentially ready for any scenario.
“Dinosaurs are a good start. I wonder which type we’ll come across first,” Diana commented as she moved towards the jungle, a rather eager grin on her face as her gaze was fixed on the jungle, looking for signs of life.
“Dinosaurs?” Carol looked around in disbelief. “What is this, a holodeck?”
“Sort of,” Kitty rolled her shoulders and bounced around a bit to loosen up. “We call it the Danger Room.”
As if to punctuate her answer, something roared nearby, and the ground started to shake.
“I think I love you both,” Carol murmured, looking down at her hands. “come on, come on, start glowing.”
Diana shook her arms a little and readied herself. Anything could come at them, and she was curious as to what just roared like that. Tyrannosaurus Rex? Something bigger? Something deadlier?
“Stay on your toes,” Diana cautioned as she prepared herself. She didn’t have anything powers for shooting anything, but she had raw strength. Her gauntlets were weapons, and suddenly she wondered if they could get some lightning to toss into the mix to charge her gauntlets for a little something different.
“One of these days I’ll take you to Krakatoa,” Kitty said, as if that explained anything. But she knew it didn’t and she knew Diana would want to know more later.
A large carnivore emerged from the mist of the jungle, tall, with large, jagged teeth. Not a T-Rex, but a larger relation.
At almost the same time, a pack of raptors attacked from behind.
Carol reacted instinctively, blasting one of the raptors and sending it skidding into a tree. She let out a woop.
Seeing Carol’s attack, and her reaction to it, made Diana smirk before she decided to take a running charge at the big dinosaur coming towards them. Because of course she’d charge at the biggest one. The pack of raptors were probably the most dangerous given how intelligent they were, but Diana still liked to go for the big targets when there was a choice.
However, she stopped before getting in range of the large dinosaur. She held her left arm up in front of her, fist clenched as the predator came towards her. She smirked, then brought her right arm up and rammed the gauntlets together, causing a burst of energy to flow from it, leveling some of the trees in its path and causing the T-Rex relative to stop and skid backwards in the blast.
And then Diana being Diana, she leapt up, intending to land on the thing’s head. Or at least the back of its neck.
Grunting in pain, Kitty unsheathed the bone claw in her right wrist. It had been awhile, but against this kind of opponent (and stupidly without stopping to pick up a sword or her gauntlet), she wanted something that gave her a little boost.
She couldn’t remember if she’d shown Diana that claw or not, but it was too late. She flipped over a raptor, bounced off of it and clawed its sister across the face.
The large carnivore roared, trying to dislodge Diana and Carol watched with some interest, incredibly impressed by both women. Rolling her shoulders, she tried to charge up a blast, but it was ineffectual against the big one. “Damn.”
At the current moment, Diana also didn’t know if she’d known about Kitty’s bone claw, but she was also distracted by holding onto the predator’s head as it tried to throw her off. She noted Carol seemingly having trouble with her glowing fist.
“Don’t try to force it. Maybe try feeling it instead!” Diana called out. But her grip slipped (there weren’t exactly hand holds on this thing) and when the dinosaur reared again, Diana was dislodged. She was flung into a tree, hitting the trunk shoulder first, then crashed her way down it like a pinball. She managed to finally catch hold of a branch and stopped herself from falling, but she was all scratched up.
Grunting, she pulled herself up onto the branch as it was large enough to support her weight. The large dinosaur then let out a mighty roar in Diana’s direction.
Feel it. Feel it. Carol closed her eyes, her power like a resevoir that she could just barely tap. It seemed to go on for ages, more an ocean and a lake, and when she opened her eyes it was like a flood gate. Twin blasts of energy shot out of her fists, hitting the dinosaur straight on and obliterating it.
The electrical feedback flooded the system, and an alarm sounded.
“Danger Room Safeties disengaged
And that was when the lasers and buzzsaws went wild.
The first thought that crossed Diana’s mind when the alarm sounded was along the lines of ‘oh crap.’ The second thought was wondering how upset Logan would be if this place got trashed. Because with the power Carol clearly had and Diana’s capabilities, there was potential for destruction to be had.
Diana used her gauntlets to block lasers coming at her as she quickly took note of the buzzsaws before she jumped out of her tree.
“Is there an off-switch? Otherwise we might have to nuke this place.” Diana directed the question to Kitty, but the statement about nuking the place was directed more towards herself and Carol. “We can cover you if you need to hack the system or something.” Diana stated.
Kitty’s head popped up from behind a control panel. “Yeah the off switch isn’t responding and with the safeties off this place will actually try to kill us so you guys … go all destructo while I try to bypass the power.”
At that, Kitty disappeared back into the control panel.
“I like how casual she sounded,” Carol quipped. “You’d think something like this has happened before…. and okay the buzzsaws and lasers are on flying robots, who designed this thing, that guy from SAW?”
“We’ll give you the time you need,” Diana stated as she moved to stand beside Carol, fists clenched as she used her gauntlets to block lasers. She glanced down at Carol, a little smirk on her face. “I cannot speak to that, but I suppose whoever did design it has quite the sense of humor for people who think the normal settings are too weak for them.”
Diana took quick inventory of the room, noting where everything was again. “Shall we give this room all it can handle?” She was probably far too excited to unleash. Though she would always keep an eye on Kitty, making sure to keep as much of the lasers and buzzsaws away from her. She knew Kitty could phase, but the fewer interruptions to her trying to work on the system, the better.
“Safeties are off, there are robots trying to kill us….” Carol punched her fist into her palm, generating another flood of energy. “Why does this feel like a typical Tuesday for you people?”
“That’s because it is,” Kitty called out from within a tangle of wires.
“What she said,” Diana responded to what Kitty said. This was about the norm for around here. Though at least this time it was contained to this one place and not the whole of Orange County going up in flames.
Once again, Diana clashed her gauntlets together, sending a pulse of energy out ahead of her, destroying some of the buzzsaws. She had to wonder if there was going to be other dangers added to this picture. After all, with the safety disabled, it seemed like there’d be more than just buzzsaws and lasers.
Their casual banter stirred something familiar inside Carol. It made her think of …. people she’d never met. Was that something from her dreams? One of those memories that was locked away and unknown to her.
Carol didn’t really have time to think any more than that. She flipped out of the way of a buzzsaw, tried to blast a laser bot only for her powers to putter out. “Seriously?”
Rolling to the side, she picked up the saw from a destroyed bot and started swinging it around at assorted targets.
Diana started blocking lasers again with her gauntlets, but it seemed like suddenly the lasers were coming from every direction at once. So she decided to just take things to the next level. Diana started moving faster than a bullet from a machine gun, darting all over, blocking lasers and deflecting the lasers into the buzzsaws to blow them up.
She suddenly appeared at Kitty’s back, blocking a buzzsaw, then she was gone again, this time appearing beside Carol, holding her gauntlet up to block a laser that would’ve hit Carol in the head.
“Watch your head,” she teased before she was again moving faster than a speeding bullet.
“Motherfu-” Carol was cut off as sparks from a buzzsaw nearly blasted her face. She felt suddenly very lacking in ability and strength, and redoubled her efforts to try to keep up with the Amazon.
“Keep it up babe, I’m almost there.” Kitty yelped when she shocked herself, then started yanking on cables.
They could fix it all later.
In some respects, Diana was still discovering her potential where her abilities were concerned. Sometimes she honestly did forget that she could move faster than a speeding bullet, but she was definitely thankful for it. Especially at the current moment.
Diana kept moving, not daring to stop for overly long lest she get hit by a laser or a buzzsaw. She didn’t want to get injured, at least not beyond the scrapes and bruises she’d suffered getting thrown into the tree earlier. Though those were probably mostly healed by now, given she healed quickly.
She kept buzzing around the area, protecting Kitty’s back while she worked. Diana briefly hoped that this place didn’t have a back up power source or something.
Something that looked partly like a raptor and partly like a mechanical nightmare charged at Carol. Carol jumped up, kicking off of a tree and spinning over the head of the machine. She brought her saw down on it’s back, but the saw got stuck and was wrenched from her grasp.
Something big and heavy roared, the ground shaking as it charged in their direction.
And then the lights flickered, went out, and red emergency lighting came on. The jungle was gone, leaving the three women in a mess of mechanical parts.
Kitty crawled out of the access hatch and looked around. “Well that went better than the last time this placed malfunctioned.”
“The last time?!” Carol threw up her hands. “What is this the Enterprise?”
The roar of something big and heavy was almost oddly invigorating. It gave Diana a target to focus on other than simply blocking lasers and destroying buzzsaws. She launched herself towards the charging behemoth only for everything to stop. Diana came to a rather sudden halt, taking a few deep breaths as she glanced around at the carnage around them.
“I don’t think the Enterprise has anything on this. No offense to the Enterprise,” Diana commented as she glanced from Kitty over to Carol, ensuring that their new friend wasn’t injured. Diana had a cut on her right bicep from a buzzsaw she hadn’t completely dodged, but otherwise she wasn’t injured.
“If you’re talking holodeck malfunctions, Voyager takes the prize,” Kitty retorted. She brushed herself off, then pulled a first aid kit out of the wall. It didn’t look bad, but she’d rather patch it up then let Diana bleed all over the nice metal floor.
Carol felt as frazzled as she looked, but also was excited. She could still feel her power flickering and fluctuating, and thought she could generate a few more sparks, but decided not to upset the electronics again. “I’m going to need a nice deserted desert somewhere.”
The fact that she was bleeding hadn’t even registered in Diana’s mind. And even if she did realize it, it would be healed over quickly anyways. She looked over at Carol, noting how frazzled she looked. She thought that was possibly how Diana herself had looked after she’d clashed her gauntlets together the first time and injured Antiope. Of course, she’d actually been more horrified about it than frazzled, but still.
“There should be a nice stretch of desert relatively close that you can use. Though may I ask, were you born with your powers or were they given to you somewhere along the way?” It didn’t really matter, Diana was simply curious on the matter.
While Kitty wiped DIana’s arm clean and very meticulously put a two inch bandaid over the wound (complete with very serious expression even if her lips twitched from concealed mirth), Carol explained. “They were given to me, though I’m starting to doubt the story I was told. Most of my memory from 6 years prior to my dreams are missing, except for a few recent glimpses. But it’s like looking at a shattered mirror through a fog. I only know I got those powers then, and the Kree gave them to me. Or so they say.”
Kitty started, both of her eyebrows raising, though she didn’t say a thing or look in Carol’s direction.
Diana glanced down, watching as Kitty cleaned the wound. She gave her a thankful smile before she turned her attention back to Carol. Now, she had little context for the world Carol Dreamt of, so she didn’t react to the mention of the Kree. But she most certainly felt empathy for Carol doubting the story she’d been told about getting her powers.
“I am sorry that you can’t remember part of your life. Though at least the memories are starting to come back, even if they are only flashes.” Diana said with a gentle tone. “Though I can sympathize with being told an origin story that turned out not to be true. My mother never told me the truth of who I was in my Dreams, so let us just say I went into the world of mortals with a very black and white view of things and believing my sword was the Godkiller, not me.” She gave Carol an empathetic look. “I hope that you learn the truth of yourself soon in your Dreams.”
Carol wasn’t entirely sure that she was ready to learn the truth of herself. All she knew for sure is someone was lying to her. She rubbed her head and nodded. “Thanks, Diana.”
That was the thing about the truth, people were rarely ever ready to learn it. And even if they were, it tended to still be a shock to the system in most instances. “You are welcome.” She gave Carol a little nod. “If you ever want to spar with someone using powers, just let me know. I’m always happy to do so. I’m still discovering the extent of my own abilities.”
Some could accuse Diana of having a deathwish with how much she wanted to discover the true extent of her powers. She didn’t have a deathwish, she just really wanted to know her abilities as much as possible.
“Anytime,” Carol said. She was as yet unaware of the full extent of her powers, but someday, she’d like to test them out too.
