Things had been going well for Margo ever since Roman had gotten out of the hospital. She’d dressed a couple of bigger named celebrities for events and her and Roman were in the process of narrowing down their search for a new place for Roman. The house search probably would have gone quicker had Roman not had so much to catch up on with work over the last month, but running one’s own business was a grueling job as Margo knew all too well cause of Eliot and Felix’s respective businesses and Roman’s was even bigger than either of theirs.
So Margo had been taking care of a lot of the house searching stuff for Roman. She still hadn’t told Eliot that she might be moving in with Roman once the house was acquired, but she knew he would be supportive of her decision if she did decide to move in with Roman.
One thing that Margo hadn’t done recently was have anymore dreams, which she was grateful for. After her last dream, watching Quentin fall apart when Alice died, she really didn’t want to see just how distraught he was bound to be. She knew it would happen eventually, but right now she was content in knowing that they had defeated The Beast even if it had come at a price.
Margo was currently sitting in a coffee shop, answering a few work related emails as well as looking at a new listing that she planned to send to Roman that evening.
Thankfully for Margo one Quentin Coldwater was woefully behind on the dreams so he was nowhere close to experiencing the love he felt for Alice and the choices made in their quest to defeat the Beast including the release of his demon. He was in the fledgling stage of dreaming and that was still a lot to take in, especially as people he thought were new to him weren’t actually all that new which made him wonder just how much they knew about the dreams.
He was running errands and was making a quick pit stop to grab coffee for himself and Ozma along with muffins because you could never have enough muffins. A sentiment he was sure that Ozma would get behind.
Of course as he waited in line he spotted Margo and he hesitated for all of a minute before he stepped out of line and wandered over. “Margo, hey.”
Hearing her name and that familiar voice, Margo looked up from her phone and smiled at Quentin, “Well if it isn’t Quentin Coldwater. Come to do a dance for me?” She couldn’t help but tease him after seeing the video of that dance he and Julia had done on their night out, “Or is that solely a duo thing and can’t be done without Julia?”
Quentin’s cheeks flushed with colour and let out a small laugh as he reached up to rub at his hair. “Afraid I’m not a solo act. I mean let’s be honest she totally carries me but let’s keep that between us, yeah?”
He bit his lower lip before taking up the nearby seat in his uniquely Quentin way which involved not sitting in any way that was remotely normal.
“Can I ask you something?”
“I guess it’s for the best. We don’t want everyone here to see it.” Margo smirked and watched as Quentin sat down in his own unique way that she had become accustomed to from the dreams. “Sure. I have some time,” She set her phone down and took a sip of her frappe as she waited for Quentin to speak again. She had no idea what he wanted to ask her, but all things considered, the possibility of it being about the dreams was a fairly high one. At the same time, there were many possibilities about what he wanted to talk to her about, so there really was a fifty/fifty chance of it being about the dreams.
Quentin worried his lower lip for a moment before clearing his throat, sweeping his fingers into his hair and tucking it securely behind his ear. “This is gonna sound weird but it’s not and it’s like-”
Okay, stop, breathe
He cleared his throat and looked up at Margo. “I’ve uh… been dreaming, about you, and uh, Eliot. Also magic.” It sounded a lot crazier when spoken aloud but then other people were also dreaming so it couldn’t be that crazy. “So I wanted to know if I’m in your dreams?”
As Quentin started asking about the dreams, Margo couldn’t stop the smirk that crossed her lips. Just like she had been waiting forever for Eliot to dream about their threesome with Quentin, she had been waiting since meeting Q for him to start dreaming and now both things had happened. “It’s about fucking time.”
She leaned in a little closer, “That means yes, by the way. You are in my dreams and have been for awhile. Do you know how hard it was to act like I didn’t know who you were when we met?”
Okay, well, that was a relief. Quentin knew Julia had been dreaming as well but it wasn’t as weird for her to be in his dreams and for him to be in hers as he had a feeling that regardless of the reality they’d still be in one another’s lives. “Really I’d imagine,” he returned with a small smirk of his own.
He didn’t mention anything else in his dreams because well some things weren’t as easy to share as ‘hey you’re in my dreams’.
“I don’t know if there are any more coming but I’ve literally just met you and Eliot.”
“Oh, trust me, there are more to come.” Margo wasn’t one to beat around the bush and considering the nature of some of their dreams, Margo figured it was better if he knew to expect more. She had no idea how he was going to react to the dreams about Alice and Alice’s death, in the waking world, and part of her wanted to warn him about that particular part, but she wouldn’t tell Quentin what was going to happen unless he specifically asked. “So that means you’ve met Penny too.”
“Yeaaaah,” Quentin drawled with a lift of his eyebrows. “And he’s kind of a dick, but then I’m kinda a dick so I don’t really think I have the right to judge anyone on their level of dickish behaviour.” He still felt guilty for how dream!Quentin was being towards dream!Julia, not cool, really not cool.
He didn’t know if he was reassured or worried by the fact Margo assured him that more were coming but no point worrying about it until it happened.
“And somebody called Alice.”
Margo laughed as she nodded, “Yeah, that’s one way to describe Penny.” She knew that he wasn’t always a dick, but the majority of the time he did come off that way. At the mention of Alice, Margo had to use all of her willpower not to roll her eyes. While she’d tried to become friends with the other magician, in the dreams, it hadn’t really worked well, “She becomes a regular in the dreams. Penny too.”
“Well, that’s good to know.” He got the distinct impression that as brief as their interactions had been his dream self was fascinated by Alice. He wasn’t entirely sure if that was a good thing or not.
It was clear that Margo was so much further along in the dreams than he was which meant she had spoilers but it was sort of like going to somebody who claimed they could tell your future, did you really want to know what was coming next?
“Still trying to get my head around the fact that magic is real.”
“You have no fucking idea how real magic is.” Margo’s gaze fell upon a spoon on the table, which gave her an idea. Margo’s knowledge of magic and the various spells they could do had filled in with each dream so this was going to be a piece of cake. Glancing at Quentin, she made a series of gestures with her hands and fingers then watched as the spoon began to bend on its own.
Quentin’s brow furrowed when Margo started doing the same movements with her hands as he’d seen in his dreams and immediately he recognised what that was. It was magic or rather the way in which their magicians in his dreams wielded it and as evident by how the spoon seemed to bend all of its own free will.
He leaned forward to reach out and catch the spoon, lifting it to get a much better look at the state it had been left in by Margo’s magic, and his lips, well, they definitely pulled into a grin.
“That’s amazing.”
Margo’s grin matched Quentin’s as she watched his reaction to her display of magic, “Get ready for some really fucked up and amazing things, Coldwater. You’re in for a ride.”
