Now that Leon was back from Fiji it was time they caught up, properly. Over food, because Veronica was still worried about just how much Leon was drinking. She invited him to a restaurant near the beach for lunch. Of course Veronica arrived before him, getting them a table in the outside seating area overlooking the ocean. She did see it enough living right on it, but it was still a nice view.
Veronica didn’t wait for Leon to arrive to order, when the server came by she ordered herself a coke to drink and some lobster nachos. Once that was taken care of she sent a text to Leon to let him know where the table was.
Leon could always go for food. He was nursing a bit of a hangover, and nothing sounded better to him now than a greasy double cheeseburger with bacon and fries. He had just pulled up to the restaurant when he got Veronica’s text, and so it didn’t take him very long to find the table and to take a seat.
“Hey,” he said to Veronica, and then turned to the server to order his burger and a Long Island Iced Tea. Once that was over, he turned back to Veronica. “How’s it going? Long time no see.”
Veronica raised a brow at his drink order. Wasn’t it a little early for alcohol? If it was anyone else she wouldn’t think much of it. But Leon had been drinking a hell of a lot lately.
“That’s what happens when you disappear to Fuji,” Veronica replied wind blowing hair in her face. “So,” she went on using the hair-tie on her wrist to pull her hair back into a ponytail. “How was it?”
“Oh it was great,” Leon said, grinning. “Lots of swimming and surfing. Tons of hot beach babes. Chris and I had a great time. It was nice to get away from,” he waved a hand vaguely in the air, “all of this for a while.” Even if it all caught up to him again the moment he’d returned. Go figure that problems didn’t just disappear if you left them alone for long enough.
Veronica rolled her eyes at Leon’s comment. She was pretty sure he was overcompensating for something. Probably the fact that he wasn’t over Alex yet. “What?” Veronica asked as the server brought over their drinks. “You didn’t miss me?” she quipped taking a sip of her coke, eyeing Leon’s long island iced tea.
“Not even a little,” Leon snorted, taking a sip of his drink. He frowned a little when he saw Veronica eyeing it. “What, you want a sip?” he asked, holding the drink out to her.
Veronica rolled her eyes at Leon’s question. That wasn’t at all why she was eying his drink. In fact she was about to comment on it when a big gust of wind came. The umbrella in the center of their table flew up in the air. Veronica watched eyes wide following the umbrella as it came back down and landed right on Leon.
It took Leon a moment to process what was happening. There was no way a gust of wind had just picked up a giant fucking umbrella and had hurled it directly at Leon, and by the time he realized that yes, his luck really was just that bad, it was too late to move out of the way.
His glass of long island iced tea shattered when he dropped it to fend off the umbrella, and he was knocked over backwards in his chair, still struggling with it. Somehow, every time he tried to push it aside he just found more fabric to flail at, until finally the umbrella was lifted off him by the worried looking server.
“What the fuck was that?!” he bellowed, still in a seated position in his chair even if he was now lying on his back.
Veronica probably shouldn’t laugh, but the image of Leon on the ground trying to fend off an umbrella was too much. “Geesh, Orcot,” Veronica finally said with her friend still on the ground. “What’d you do to piss off an umbrella?”
“Shaddap,” Leon snapped.
“I’m very sorry sir,” the server said after he managed to fold up the umbrella and place it to the side. “Are you okay? Here, let me help you up,” he said, offering a hand.
“Whatever, I got it,” Leon snapped at him, and managed to climb to his feet on his own.
“I’m sorr-” the man started, and Leon snapped “it’s fine,” before picking up his chair. How freakin’ embarrassing. He tried not to look around, but he was pretty sure that everyone was staring at him.
Once Leon was back on his feet and had the chair up right Veronica finally stopped laughing. She did feel a little bad for laughing at her friend when he could be like hurt or something. But the whole situation was one of the most hilarious things she had seen in her life.
Of course Leon would get attacked by an umbrella.
“Well,” Veronica finally said. “That’s certainly not something you see everyday.”
“Ha ha ha,” Leon said dryly, clearly not amused at how amused Veronica was by all this. “You know what,” he said to the server. “Maybe I’ll take my burger to go after all.” The umbrella might not have wounded anything other than his pride, but he still wasn’t feeling very up for lunch anymore.
“Come on, Leon,” Veronica said. “Don’t be like that.” Though she couldn’t really blame him. She had been laughing at him after all. “I want to hear about Fiji.”
Leon scowled, rubbing the side of his head. He could still feel everyone’s eyes on him and all he wanted to do was leave. He glanced at Veronica, then scowled and looked away.
“Fine,” Leon said, sitting down at the table again. “What the fuck even was that?”
“Well you see, Orcot,” Veronica began. “The force of the wind caused the umbrella to lift up and land on you.” She said it very matter-of-factly like this was something she saw everyday. When it was actually one of the last things she was ever expecting to see.
“Ha ha ha,” Leon said flatly. He turned to the server, who was still standing there as if uncertain what to do. “I guess I’ll stay a little longer,” Leon grumbled. “I’ll get another drink.” The majority of his other one was now drying on the cement under him.
“Too bad it didn’t land on you instead,” he muttered in Veronica’s direction.
“That’s just uncalled for,” Veronica replied to his comment though her usual smirk was on her face. “It’s not like I wished for the umbrella to fall on you.” Though it was a sight she could never unsee. Nor did she want to.
Leon snorted. Honestly, at this point he wouldn’t be surprised if someone had wished for it and that was the whole reason it happened. That would almost be more normal in Orange County than it just being a freak accident.
His burger and Veronica’s nachos came not longer, and Leon was content to just focus on his burger, telling Veronica stories from his and Chris’s trip. He went through another two drinks, and was feeling pretty good again by the time the bill came around. He pulled a $20 from his wallet, and went to hand it to the server.
Veronica watched as the wind came once again and Leon’s $20 bill went flying out of his hand and over the fence. Maybe it wasn’t the umbrella Leon had pissed off. But mother nature in general. Veronica found herself laughing again as she pulled a credit card out of her wallet handing it over to the server. “I’ve got this,” she told Leon given that his money had just flown away.
Leon watched, mouth agape, as his money flew out of his hand. “Goddammit,” Leon swore, barely hearing Veronica’s offer to cover lunch. He was already off, using one of the potted plants against the patio wall as a step before he vaulted himself over the glass. He would be damned if he let the wind steal his money. He needed that.
No sooner had Veronica pulled out her credit card than Leon was jumping over the wall. Veronica leapt to her feet running towards the wall herself. “What the hell, Orcot?” she yelled through the glass. “Are you okay?” Because seriously he could have hurt himself jumping over the glass wall like that.
“Fine!” Leon called over his shoulder. A few more steps, and he slammed his foot down on his loose bill, and he let out a sigh of relief before he bent down to pick it up. “Got it!” he yelled back at Veronica, and began a light jog back to the restaurant.
Veronica rolled her eyes as Leon continued to go after his $20. She went back to her seat once he got it waiting for both him to return and the server to return with her credit card. “You know,” Veronica said once Leon got back. “If you’re that hard up for cash I could have given you $20.”
“It’s the principle of the matter,” Leon grumbled. He’d be damned if he was going to let some rogue gust of wind rob him of his money. Anyway, he wouldn’t feel right borrowing money from a friend anyway. He’d lend money to friends, but he wasn’t the kind of guy who’d borrow. “Thanks for the lunch. I owe you one.”
“Pretty sure it’s a lot more than one by now,” Veronica shot back with a smirk. What with all the favors she did for Leon these days. But who was keeping score? Oh right, she was.
