It was dusk verging on nightfall as Obi-Wan stepped out of his car and began the walk up the path to Dani’s house. He’d made the short journey on a daily basis in the past, it felt a little strange to be making it so infrequently now. There was a vague feeling of happy familiarity and a simultaneous burning in his chest. He was fresh from work, dirty and rough-handed from handing tools without gloves. In one of those hands was a folded piece of paper, which he carried with pronounced delicacy. And truly, he wished he was coming home, rather than arriving at a house.
He knocked on the door, greeted at once by the sounds of the many animals within. Ho’nene’s wet nose made streaks against the front window, like a child tracing a smiley face. It certainly brought one to Obi-Wan’s. There was some scratching at the base of the door. Obi-Wan crouched down and lifted the latch of the mail slot. Doom’s tiny and disturbingly almost-human hands burst through immediately, clawing at the air to clutch at whatever lay waiting. He chittered at Obi-Wan and Obi-Wan chittered right back.
“Danielle?” he called, between squirrel sounds.
Dani's presence was heralded, not by the sound of her footsteps approaching but by the fact that all the animals at once seemed to quiet and step away from the door. She'd gotten comfortable enough with using her empathy with them to get them to calm down when she needed them to.
Which was good, because otherwise when she'd opened the door Ho'nene would have burst through it like a wrecking ball and probably knocked Obi-Wan over, while Doom nibbled on his fingernails.
The look on her face wavered between confusion and happiness to see him, "Obi?"
Obi-Wan popped back up to his full height, his own expression wavering between happiness and something a little like loneliness. He wasn’t looking forward to leaving Dani back in California while he traveled to Minnesota, so soon after their latest reconnection. Things were rather peaceful at the moment. He didn’t want to leave that peace behind. Especially considering he was heading for a combat competition.
He continued to handle the paper in his hands very carefully. He tilted his head and smiled brightly. “I just wanted to stop by before I headed off tomorrow. Not looking forward to the early flight. I have to be up at 4 AM.” He lifted the paper. “Well, I came to give you this. It’s a... I don’t know exactly what to call it. It’s just something I started writing down this afternoon.”
He was handling the paper with such delicacy that Dani felt like it might be some sacred relic. She handled it with a similar amount of care when she took it from his hand, "Is this one of those things that I shouldn't read right in front of you?"
With her permission, the dog finally came up to greet him while she tucked the note into her pocket. No matter how he replied, she felt that reading it right there would be a little awkward. So she turned the subject back around to his flight, "4 AM is early, I guess I shouldn't invite you in for coffee."
“No, read it once I’ve gone...” ...Or I’ll turn red as a tomato, Obi-Wan finished. He peered into the house and crouched down again to scratch Ho’nene’s ears. Coffee was tempting, but more so was the company. The trouble was he didn’t have much time to spare, or time at all. This was already a side trip he couldn't really afford. But for almost a full minute, while he played with the dog, he seriously considered saying to hell with it all and taking Dani up on it. He could sleep on the plane.
But as the seconds ticked by, he accepted that he had to be responsible instead. “I wish I could,” he said, his voice very sincere. The corner of his mouth turned up with a lopsided smile that was meant to convey his disappointment. He knew once he crossed the threshold, he wouldn’t be able to convince himself to leave in a timely manner. “Keep it warm for me until I get back.”
"I'll keep the thoughts of drinking it with you warm and just brew fresh coffee when you get back, if it's all the same to you," Dani tilted her head and smiled, the joke warming her features up considerably.
She'd made the choice not to go with him and she still stuck by it. Not just because it would have been hard to get the time off so soon after getting back to work, but because she still felt he needed to show Loras his support on his own. She wondered if he'd spoken to Loras about the fact that they were trying to get back together, but if the man had a competition this week it probably wasn't the best time.
It could wait, she decided. The important part was that they were working through it, "When are you two coming back, anyway?"
“Sunday,” he replied. “I should be back around noon. That’s a good time for brunch, isn’t it?”
He wanted her to come with him, but he knew it was better they avoid certain tensions while they were putting themselves back together. Besides, a little longing could only help things.
But as for right now, Dani was going to get kissed, whether or not he was a mess. Obi-Wan took a step forward and placed his hands on her shoulders and kissed her goodbye for the weekend. She would have to forgive him for the smudge of dirt he left behind on her cheek.
She never minded when he came home all dirtied up, and was extremely happy to be kissed, especially with him in the state he was in. It was actually a turn on of hers, and the smudge of dirt left behind on her cheek was considered a badge of honor.
