Michael had really expected it to take longer for him to get used to wearing the necklace that Katou had arranged for him but only a couple of weeks had passed since Freya had given it to him and it was already habit for him to grab it when he was getting dressed in the morning. It had been easy enough to explain as part of his new image now that he was a ‘free man’ again and off house arrest. A couple well placed hints when that had started and people were still believing the lie even though there were no court documents to back it up. He wasn’t going to complain though. It kept him from having to get into details about why he’d been in his house for a year.
He’d arranged to meet with Freya to check in on how he was doing, make sure it was still working for him and just get to spend some time talking with another vampire which was why he was sitting in the bakery now, sipping at a coffee. He didn’t need to eat or drink regular food anymore but he enjoyed it still.

When she had gotten Michael’s request to meet up, Freya had made time in her calendar. Not the easiest of things, but she had helped him and she did want to make sure he wouldn’t use the necklace so that he could hurt people. Not that it would matter if he ever bothered to kill someone at night. But she still had to make sure. It was her magic, and thus her responsibility. Yes, Michael would make his own decisions but she was giving him that freedom.
Arriving at the bakery, Freya got herself some tea (she was already drinking too much coffee given her current workload before going to the table and nodding in greeting as she sat down.
***
Michael gave her a friendly smile as she sat down, trying to tune out the sheer mass of sounds coming at him from all around. “Thanks for taking the time to meet me.” He said, setting his mug down on the table between them. “And again for taking the time to make this for me. I’d be completely nuts without it I think.”
***
There were definitely things that Freya was glad she didn’t have to deal with being a witch as opposed to a vampire - which almost had become a thing - and that was that she didn’t have to deal with heightened senses and emotions being intensified. She needed to keep her emotions controlled to some degree because of the ramifications that could come when she lost control of her emotions.
“Of course.” It was true she had been annoyed by Katou’s ‘look at me I’m so edgy nothing in the world is free’ mentality when she had first said that she didn’t expect anything for helping. Mostly because she was tired of that mentality and the work she did? Help people. But no matter. “I can only imagine.”
***
“Even if Kat probably did have some kind of an attitude when arranging it.” Michael said with a grin. He loved his boyfriend, even if he wasn’t ready to say the words yet, but he knew Katou’s faults all the same. “A year trapped in my house was enough. And some places I can only get to during the day.” He added before taking another sip of his coffee.
“This necklace...it’s not going to just stop working one day though right?”
***
“That’s an understatement, but I’m used to attitude so it’s fine.” God was she used to attitude. Living with Klaus tended to give her a thick skin. Also why she was pretty good at finding work arounds. Like her payment being tea. Oh, she probably could have pushed for something like volunteer work but that wasn’t her style. Choice in such matters was an important thing for the witch. But getting masala chai out of the ordeal? Not the worst possible outcome. “I can imagine though.”
Ah, and there was the question. Still it did make sense and he was the one to open the door.
“So long as you don’t kill anyone.”
Really, it was quite simple.
***
“I’m sorry for whatever he said. He’s not a bad guy deep down. Really he’s not.” Michael said, turning his mug over in his hands as he looked down into it. “Hopefully it’ll stay only in your imagination. I wouldn’t wish that on anybody.”
“So long as I don’t...kill anyone. Sounds easy enough as long as I can keep getting blood bags.” Which reminded him that he needed to reach out to Tyler and ask him to show him how he got them. “I’m trying to not feed off people if I can avoid it. I don’t know how it would work if I did. Whether it would turn them or...what.”
***
The apology was met with a shrug. Freya honestly didn’t care all that much about it. She thought Katou was a bit of an idiot thanks to bringing about the apocalypse by hiding a celestial egg or whatever under his bed, but she had dealt with worse than his attitude. “Indeed.” She had enough drama to deal with in her dreams and her work was a bit hard to do if she was unable to leave her home.
At least he did seem to be the type to use blood bags so it was a sign she had been correct in the fact that Michael would be fine if she made him a daylight necklace.
“That’s good to know. As for if you would turn someone? I can’t answer that. I’m pretty sure it depends on how vampires work in your world. In mine, you only turn into a vampire if you die and have vampire blood in your system, and then you have to feed to complete the transition otherwise you will die. Again.”
Dream worlds were tricky like that. It had been one of the reasons she’d been concerned initially that the necklace wouldn’t even work just because of the different vampire than those from her Dreams. But it seemed to work so that was good.
***
Michael took a sip from his coffee as he listened to her explanation about how vampires were made in her Dreams. “I still don’t know how it works in my world exactly. I was killed by one and then Amelie turned me even though I was a ghost. Which by logic shouldn’t be possible but...neither should a ghost having a physical body from sunset to sunrise so maybe I should just accept that there is no logic in mine.” He said with a small grin.
“I know that I had to go feed right after Amelie turned me. But Sam...she sent someone with me to make sure I stayed in control. To make sure I didn’t take too much.”
***
As Michael explained what he did (or really didn’t) know about vampires in his own Dreams and the rules for them, Freya just took a sip of tea and listened. It wasn’t like there was much for her to say. She was pretty certain there were other vampires from different worlds who might have different rules but it wasn’t something Freya was paying too much attention to.
“The dreams usually will give you some sort of insight. Usually.”
It was hard to say. But to Freya, it seemed that answers eventually would show up - often in the most dramatic and stressful way possible.
“But that makes sense.”
***
“They might as well give us something good with all the shit they put us through. Or at least something useful.” Michael said, almost grumbled actually.
“I think knowing that it took him to hold me back is part of why I don’t want to go off the bags. Sam’s not here anymore to help me out. Not that he’d have known much about...what I am here.”
***
“Basically.” There really wasn’t all that much to say about what the Dreams should give them to balance out the headache that usually came with them. Given the span of time she had nearly died thanks to Dream injuries, Freya was always happy if something even remotely beneficial would come through. Which really wasn’t often but she made due.
“That makes sense. But I am also pretty sure blood bags aren’t unheard of for vampires here” While Klaus preferred the vein, Freya knew Caroline at least used blood bags. Her other brothers? Not something she worried about too much since there weren’t bodies she needed to deal with. “Either way, you have resources, so you should be fine.”
***
“I still have to figure out a way to get my own blood bags. Right now I’m going off what a...friend brought me. Well I think he’s a friend at least my house didn’t toss him on his ass so he wasn’t coming in with the plan to kill me. I’m taking that as a win.” Michael said attempting to make a joke about it.
***
“Well it’s not like you can’t just ask.” Because really now. If he was concerned about getting blood bags, and there were vampires on the network who used them, it really wasn’t all that impossible to reach out and ask. Okay so Freya wasn’t known for asking for help herself but it wasn’t like she was needing to deal with blood bags and not killing people. “But yes. That is probably a good sign.”
***
Michael gave her a flash of a bright grin at her response. “Yeah I know I can. I’m just - Texas pride and all that. I’m working on it.” He was too. He liked to think that reaching out to her to make sure he had the rules down already was a good sign that he was getting better about it.
***
“I was going to say idiotic male pride and never asking for help. But sure. Texas pride. Why not.” Honestly, she had enough brothers that idiocy and not asking for help was...pretty normal and also thus annoying. Not like Freya was much better. Older sister who had to fix everything and all. “But that’s good to know that you’re working on it.”
And she did take note that Michael at least had reached out to her and was getting the rules.
***
Michael let out a happy laugh and took a drink from his coffee. “Who says it can’t be both? Maybe I’ve got a double dose of pride from two sources.” He said with a shrug. “Would it be alright if I reached out now and then just to check in? I...lost a lot of my contacts for sanity check with being trapped in the house so long. And a lot of them I couldn’t be honest with about what I am now.” And he didn’t want to only have Katou to talk to and Freya seemed nice. And not likely to pull her punches with him if he needed someone to be brutally honest.
***
Freya gave a slight smile at the comment of maybe it could be both. She wasn’t completely cold or annoyed, she was just extremely overworked and stressed. But that didn’t mean she couldn’t be amused or the like.
“It probably is a bit of both.” That was something she had learned. When there were two reasons something might happen? It was usually both.
“But yeah, of course.”
Why not add someone else to the list. Apparently since she didn’t have to only worry about some family crisis or enemy like in the Dreams, she had taken on the world instead. Which okay, she’d been doing long before she had ever joined Valar but still.
***
“Thanks. I just...don’t want to be relying just on Katou or Amycus all the time when I need to know if I’m going too far off the rails. Not sure that Kat...he might not always pull me back. He might push me over it in the right mood.” His boyfriend...Michael knew he had a tendency to get caught up in things. Maybe not always think it through.
***
It took great restraint for Freya not to scoff at the notion of Katou being someone that would be a good gauge of if someone was going over the edge or not. Especially as Michael even acknowledged Katou could push him off the rails if he was in the right mood to do so. But she managed not to, and she deserved a drink just for that. Instead she just gave a nod.
“Well, relying on one or two people isn’t exactly healthy as it is. So if I can help, I’m more than happy to.”
It was what she did apparently. Noticing a missed call on her phone from work, Freya figured it was yet another work emergency which honestly wasn’t shocking at all these days.
“Did you need anything else? Work is calling.”
***
Michael shook his head at that question. “No. I think I’m good for today but thanks. For all of it. And if there’s anything I can do to help with your work or anything - just let me know. I might as well use the fact I’m known for something good after all.”
***
Freya gave a slight smile at the offer. The things she was dealing with? She doubted someone with some bit of celebrity would really help. But it was still a nice offer.
“Of course. If I can think of anything, I’ll let you know.”
With that, the witch grabbed her things before heading to the door. There really weren’t enough hours in the day.
