Kyle Valenti felt like death. He really did. He also didn’t look great. The night before had been unpleasant to say the least and even now it lingered. The occasional flirt back to feeling like he was losing his mind and all autonomy in the same way his dad had. Things like that were genetic and hereditary after all so the fear whilst not real wasn’t based on some sort of fact.
Of course it had become easier to focus past his own fear and panic when he’d spotted Hanna who much like him was seemingly wrapped up in her own personal nightmare. Looking after her had steadied him enough to get them both out of the bar, away from whatever that red mist had been, and mostly clear their heads. Neither of them had been in any position to make it home unassisted but thankfully for Kyle when he rang Alex the other man answered and immediately came out to help.
Hanna was shown to the guest bedroom and Kyle to his own though admittedly not much sleeping happened and now in the breaking of a new dawn he was sleep fuddled and padding aimlessly through his home in the pursuit of coffee. He didn’t even care that he was only in his boxer briefs and a muscle tee, he really didn’t.
Alex was already awake; he wasn't sleeping well at the moment as his dreams were taking a turn he wasn't enjoying. He'd dreamed about prom night, he'd dreamed about Guerin in an alien museum (of all places for a guy that woke up out of a pod to kiss him, an alien museum seemed to be the most obvious) and he'd dreamed about- Well. He decided not to focus too much on what he dreamed about after that because it was harrowing.
Plus concern was a good motivator for an early morning. Dressed himself in sweatpants and an oversized tee, Alex glanced up, glasses perched on the edge of his nose which he nudged up his face when he saw Kyle padding in.
"Coffee's still fresh," he said, brows creasing slightly. "You wanna tell me what happened last night?"
Kyle made something akin to a grunt as he shuffled in the direction of the coffee pot and helped himself to a full cup of pure black coffee which he nursed as he pulled up a seat to settle at the breakfast bar.
“Honestly I have no idea.” Not a lie. “Some girl bumped into us and this red mist descended which basically made everybody myself and Hanna included freak out.”
He flexed his hands around the coffee cup and reached up to rub at the bridge of his nose because it felt like he was frowning.
Alex shifted so he was sitting next to Kyle and bumped his shoulder gently. "Red mist?" he asked, "You- when I called you last night you told me you were losing your mind. I've never seen you so freaked out."
His hand moved to rub between Kyle's shoulder blades reassuringly.
Kyle exhaled a breath and found it was shakier than it had any right to be but then that tended to happen when you were in the company of somebody you trusted.
“Yeah, literal red mist. It was like it tapped into my worst fear and played it out for me to see.” His mind was by far one of the things Kyle valued most and the thought of losing it? Losing himself? Scary shit.
He worked tension through his jaw. “I felt myself losing pieces of who I was, what I did or didn’t remember and I saw myself completely and utterly stripped of everything that makes me me.”
Alex's hand slid up Kyle's back, touch securing at the back of his neck and tugging him closer so he could drape his arm over Kyle's shoulders properly and press a kiss to his temple. "I get it, it's a real fear but it- it's not happening to you right now. It won't. Inheritance percentages are getting lower and lower."
Kyle went with the tug and closed his eyes at the reassuring kiss to his temple. “Rationally? I know that but last night? I was anything but rational, man. I lost it. I lost it big time.”
"Yeah," Alex mumbled against Kyle's temple, pressing another kiss there before he just lifted his chin and slotted Kyle underneath it for a moment, not holding him fast so he could move if he wanted to but the offer of continual comfort was there. "You sounded pretty messed up when you called."
It had been a long time since Kyle had been comforted in any form as ordinarily he was the one doing the comforting so much like a deprived child he soaked up the attention and allowed himself that moment of vulnerability.
“I definitely was that. I was probably less messed up than I had been at the start but marginally so.”
Alex just tightened his arm around Kyle and hummed quietly. "Well, it's over now," he offered. "Once sleeping beauty wakes up we'll go for breakfast, hmm?"
Kyle nodded his head. "Mm, sounds good. I could definitely eat." He was starving, actually, now that he thought about it. He nudged Alex gently in the side and offered him a small but genuine smile. "Thank you, man."
Alex just smiled, shoulder hitching. "Don't mention it, I'm just glad I could help."
Kyle blew out a breath and frowned slightly as he sniffed himself. "And I need a shower, apparently."
Alex laughed, "Yeah, well, stress sweat is a breed all of its own, dude. Go on, take your coffee. I'll go see if our guest's ready to get up and we can leave in an hour."
Kyle nodded his head, reaching out to gather up his coffee before getting to his feet slowly. He literally felt like an old man. "Yeah, cool. That works for me." He reached out and squeezed Alex's shoulder before he headed in the direction of the stairs and then the bathroom.
Alex cradled his coffee in both hands and watched Kyle head away, letting out a breath and then following suit, easing off the stool.
Time to go check on their guest.
