Deep down, Freya had known that there was no other outcome. They weren’t going to be able to save Hayley. She had seen what was happening, yet she had naively clung to the hope that they would somehow succeed even knowing the way that the Dreams tended to go. In some ways, the witch had just needed to cling to that. Especially as her waking and work life grew more and more complicated and overwhelming with everything she had to do. She was burnt out yet refused to admit it.
But it wasn’t something she could avoid forever. At some point, Freya would dream and find out how the search for Hayley ended and there was simply no avoiding it.
And eventually the dream came. Getting back to New Orleans after everything that had happened back in Virginia. Of nearly binding Hope’s werewolf side in an attempt to appease her captors so they would release Hayley. Not like that would work. But there were disagreements with Vincent on what to do about Declan. First she had wanted to tell him the truth because he deserved to know but Vincent stopping her to preserve his innocence in it all. Then a suggestion that maybe compulsion might work so that he wouldn’t drown in his grief. They of course worked it out but it was too late.
After a time, the tracking spell worked and Klaus went to get Hayley but…. She died. Elijah had shown up, only he wasn’t there for them. He had a new family and he went to help them apparently and Hayley died and Freya had to be the one to tell her. To be there for her and remain strong. Because when Klaus had been unable to be there thanks to splitting the Hollow into the four Original vampires, it had been Freya who had helped Hayley in raising Hope.
But so much went wrong as they got to New Orleans. Klaus couldn’t be there for obvious reasons, but as they got to the Second Line, the others weren’t there and Hope was freaking out. It made sense and Freya did her best to calm the teen but what could she do? For some reason, Klaus was late in being astrally projected there and then Marcel called to tell her to cover for him and Vincent as they had Elijah and were going to make him remember as part of some deal to save his new love. And honestly, part of Freya agreed. This had all happened because he didn’t remember who he was.
Yet nothing in the life of the Mikaelsons was easy because those same vampires showed up to the Second Line prepared to kill and Hope refused to listen to Freya to calm down and instead she was magically moved to the side and it was only because Josh was there and she was able to call out to him that Hope didn’t die as well. To going back to the house and overhearing Hope telling Klaus she wanted to die…. To the phone call with her brother. Not only had she messed up again because he’d been trying to save Elijah from himself and the ramifications of him realizing what he had done, but also the fact that the prophecy he had told her about? All signs pointed to it being true. That if any of her siblings were with one another, with Hope, it would end with the death of all first borns who called New Orleans their home. And Freya didn’t care about herself but Hope… And she lost it. By herself, unable to reach out to Keelin, of the fact she couldn’t do anything right…
But they had to get to the Bayou for the final farewell to Hayley. Hope asking for her help in finding a way to save their family, giving her her mother’s necklace. Keelin showing up as well as Marcel and Vincent. Giving the eulogy on how Hayley made her feel like part of a family, how she would lift her up when she failed, they would dance together when she succeeded. How you forgot the words but never how someone made you feel and a vow to honor Hayley’s memory by coexisting with one another and loving one another as she would want them to….
Then Klaus showing up as himself despite the danger because Hope needed her father and everyone leaving, all the while worried and knowing that they shouldn’t interfere. Not right then. But the lightning hitting the bayou and spreading fire on the water. One step closer to the end.
Waking with a start, Freya’s entire heart was heavy as emotion after emotion washed over her. Much like Hope had done when she realized the truth, glass in her room shattered. On instinct, the witch reached for her phone to call her girlfriend. To make sure she was okay. But then she remembered that Evie was on a mission and so getting up, Freya made her way up to the attic. She wasn’t thinking about logistics or anything like that. Freya just needed to see Evie and know that she was okay and so magic Skype calls was going to be a thing.
Except it didn’t work. She couldn’t reach Evie and if that was because she was so out of sorts or what, Freya didn’t know. But not knowing wasn’t an option. Not right now. She was too anxious and agitated, desperate really. She’d been on edge for so long now…. So without any thought on where she might end up, Freya began to do the incantation for the travelling spell. Yes, it was a much further distance than she usually did but again, Freya didn’t care.
And despite the strain of the spell, the blonde suddenly found herself….well, she didn’t know and all she could do was look around as she tried to place herself before she noticed Evie.
Freya wasn’t the only one getting burned out because of work. Evie was more than feeling of strain of her job, of a world in which terrorists sometimes seemed to have the upperhand no matter how good or advanced the intel was on them. She felt the strain of her country being pushed further and further towards the precipice, waiting to be pushed off into the abyss because of Brexit. Though Evie well knew it wasn’t completely the fault of politicians in Westminster. No, Russia had a hand in the Brexit misinformation just as it had in the U.S. elections, and now both countries were self-destructing in different ways.
But currently, thanks to the Brexit extension, Evie had been able to be more focused on her job, and on planning out her solo missions. She was an Assassin, and while Templars weren’t here, at least to her knowledge, she was going to use her abilities as an Assassin to protect the innocent. It was what she did in her Dreams, but without the Brotherhood’s hierarchy existing in this world, Evie was more than willing to bend the rules that guided the Assassins.
Truth be told, she could’ve planned a mission to several different places, but she’d chosen Kashmir this time because it was a hot zone located between two nuclear powers that historically hated each other. And if she could make an attempt to de-escalate, or prevent de-escalation in the area, she most certainly would. So careful planning had been undertaken, contacts made, but finally she’d been ready for the mission and left.
Magical Skype most likely hadn’t worked because Evie wasn’t in the hotel she’d told Freya she’d be staying in. She was out making her strike on the Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorist organization. She’d identified one of their camps and was there. Evie was crouched, the hood of her hoodie pulled over her head, rendering her invisible to anyone who wasn’t within a couple feet of her. She had the high ground, memorizing the movements of the soldiers keeping watch as well as all others in the base. Evie was outnumbered, but that didn’t matter. If she did this right, which she nearly did, she could take out half of the men before anyone knew there was something wrong. And then she could take out the other half before they even identified who was attacking them.
Of course, sometimes things got messy, but she still managed to get out of it well enough. So once she’d identified movements and how many were here and where they were, she began her methodical attack. She was armed with her Hidden Blade, the new design that Ruby had helped her with (which was a vast improvement over her clunky 19th Century gauntlet), more throwing knives than anyone would even guess she could possibly carry, and a handgun. She preferred to not use the gun because it made noise, but sometimes things got messy and a gun was preferable to her Hidden Blade or throwing knives.
First she took out the guards watching the main entrance easily. They never saw her coming, and she dragged their bodies into cover so they weren’t found right away. Then she got back to her initial spot to wait for the next round. However, before she could make her move, one of the men noticed the lack of guards at the main entrance.
“Shit,” she cursed under her breath. As the men went to inspect, Evie poised herself to leap upon them and double assassinate them. However, she was just leaping off of her perch when something unexpected happened. Freya seemed to appear out of nowhere, something she caught out of the corner of her eye. “Freya?” She questioned, taking her attention off of where she was going and...that was definitely Freya.
But When Evie turned her attention back to where she was going, it was too late. She’d missed her target. She hit the ground and rolled out of it. One of the men shouted a warning. Mentally cursing, Evie tried to attack, but she couldn’t dodge bullets. She took a bullet to the shoulder, a cry of pain coming from her as she recoiled from the attack. She managed to roll into cover from the shooter, gritting her teeth as she pulled a throwing knife out and readied it if he came closer to her.
But why was Freya here?
If Freya had been more aware of her surroundings or of logic, she would have put together that Evie was probably out when she had tried the Magical Skype call. Because that made sense. But after the torrent of emotions she was dealing with because of the Dreams, the feeling that she couldn’t do anything right and just the desperate need to see her girlfriend and make sure she was okay given what it was she was in Kashmir to do? None of the logical explanations had really taken hold and Freya instead had acted on instinct.
So of course she ended up in the middle of a fight. Yes, it would have been awkward to show up in a random restaurant that Evie was getting food at or something, but it wouldn’t quite be this.
Turning, the witch noticed her girlfriend. Just as she got shot. She wasn’t close enough to see where Evie had gotten shot, just that she’d been shot and dropped.
“No!”
There was a surge of fighters coming up behind her but Freya paid them no mind. A quick head snap to the side and flick of her wrist and bodies dropped, their necks snapped to the side. Dead. Birds in the sky dropped as well.
Honestly it was just a good thing they weren’t near an actual village or anything because undoubtedly it would be up in flames by now as Freya raced towards where she had seen Evie drop.
Under normal circumstances, Evie would’ve realized that Freya’s presence here, be it Magical Skype or physically being here, meant something was wrong. But given Evie had been in the middle of working, her brain hadn’t been able to shift into logical thinking outside of her current objective.
Her shoulder burned, and she wasn’t certain if the bullet had gone all the way through or not, but she could tell it hadn’t ricocheted and hit anything vital inside of her. She could breathe so it hadn’t hit her lung or anything of the sort. At any rate, she had a knife in hand and flicked her left wrist, her Hidden Blade sliding out. She pushed through the pain, ready to lash out at the man who had shot her, but instead of hearing his footsteps, she just heard a thud. Along with a lot of other thuds. It was slightly disconcerting, so she stood up, favoring her left shoulder where she’d been shot, and she saw all the bodies, both of the fighters and birds. All of them were dead. But she didn’t have much time to process that scene before she saw Freya running towards her. Another flick of her left wrist caused her Hidden Blade to slide back into hiding, and she pushed the hood of her sweatshirt off.
“Freya? What are you doing here?” She asked, ignoring the pain she was in. The more she moved her left arm, the worse it hurt.
Something seemed to register in Freya’s brain as Evie stood up. That she wasn’t dead. But the witch didn’t stop until she actually got to Evie, hands on her arms (not near where she’d been shot) and just scanned Evie over as if not believing her own eyes.
“Oh thank god, you’re okay, I thought….”
Gaze landing one where the bullet had pierced Evie’s shoulder, Freya removed her hands from her girlfriend’s arms and instead focused her energy on healing the wound. Only once the wound was healed did she seem to breathe before just hugging Evie tightly.
“I thought I lost you.”
When Freya came over to her, Evie looked back at her. She was trying to figure out what exactly brought her here. She hadn’t exactly checked the Network recently since she was focused on mission, so she supposed Orange County could be going to hell and Freya needed her back there. But that wasn’t it, it was clearly something more pressing.
Evie was about to say something when Freya instead healed her shoulder. Which, okay, she did enjoy having a witch for a girlfriend at times like these. Not that Evie got injured all that often, but it did happen now and again. It was nice to not have to go to a hospital or find a doctor who’d treat her off the record.
Now, the hug pretty much told her all she needed to know. Or it narrowed down the causes of Freya coming here to about two. One being Dreams, the other being her family in Orange County. She returned the tight hug, gently rubbing Freya’s back.
“It’s okay, I’m here,” she responded softly.
Freya was all action at the moment, focusing on what needed to be done. No time for words or anything like that. Not until Evie was healed and only then did she let herself breathe, which was when she had hugged her girlfriend and made the comment on thinking she’d lost her.
It could have been because of the Dreams or what had happened. Well, it was fairly obvious that part of it was directly because of what had happened. The dead bodies all around gave that one away. But it usually was Dreams that brought too much up and made Freya realize things or just make her panicked depending. Her mind was still a swirl of emotions, a storm, and as the adrenaline and energy wore of, Freya barely was keeping herself up as she clung to Evie and just nodded in her shoulder at the words of assurance.
As Freya clung to her, Evie could almost feel the emotions through the hug. It was certainly more than a clue as to why her girlfriend had suddenly showed up here. Evie just held onto Freya, letting her calm down a little, but she knew they couldn’t stay there. Sure, everyone here was dead, a particular fact that somewhat unnerved Evie at how Freya had just done that without a second thought, but who knew if they were expecting reinforcements or something. And knowing how tensions tended to be high in this area, it probably was best that they get somewhere safe, and then talk.
“It’s good to see you, but we shouldn’t linger here,” she said softly, not yet pulling away from the hug. She didn’t know if Freya could teleport them to Evie’s hotel room without draining herself completely, but the Assassin would get them back there if needed.
Ever so slowly, Freya began to calm down. To place herself and the fact that Evie was there. Her emotions were still in a tailspin from the Dream and then everything that had happened when she had shown up, but she could at least focus on Evie. And what she said.
So even though she didn’t want to pull away, she did so. Because her girlfriend was right. They shouldn’t linger there. And while Freya probably shouldn’t use the teleportation spell, se did so anyway. She’d need to save up energy to get back home seeing at how this wasn’t exactly planned but she could at least have some time with Evie to get everything settled and to make sure her girlfriend was truly okay.
Once they were at the hotel, Freya all but collapsed to sitting on the bed but she didn’t care. All that Evie was alright.
Teleporting was...an experience, to say the least. It was something Evie wasn’t used to, and it took her a moment or two to regain her bearings once they appeared in her hotel room. It was small, but she hadn’t needed anything large or fancy. She was here on a mission, not for vacation.
After Freya was sitting and Evie got her bearings back, she went to grab some water for her girlfriend, bringing it over and handing it to her as she sat down beside.
“What happened to bring you here?” She finally asked, knowing something had triggered Freya to come here in her pajamas. Evie took her hoodie off, carefully setting it on her suitcase considering it had throwing knives in it. She also took off her streamlined gauntlet and set it aside before giving Freya her full, undivided attention.
That was the question, wasn’t it? Though it wasn’t like this was the first time a Dream had startled Freya to the point of needing to check on her girlfriend. Surprise airport pick ups, texts… but she had never been quite like this. Running her fingers through her hair, Freya sighed.
“We failed at saving Hayley.” While the witch didn’t comment too often on her Dreams, she had kept Evie up to date on all of that given the whole nazi vampire thing and why she had told her to not listen if Freya ever pulled away because she thought she couldn’t be with Evie while handling family drama as well.
“God...I just….then it was like I could do nothing right. I had to give her eulogy…. And of course there’s a prophecy involved with the Hollow, or more it would be the catalyst and all the more reason why my siblings can never see one another.”
Because there was always something and god she was so tired. Tired of having to be the strong one. Tired of one thing after the other. She’d do it, of course she would. And it was one more reason to keep digging into things in Orange County to ensure it never came to pass. Just because the specifics of the prophecy were about the end of the supernatural community in New Orleans didn’t mean it wouldn’t alter enough to be about Orange County instead.
Just as Evie had thought, it was a Dream. That was typically the source when Freya needed to come check on her. So of course, it made sense why Freya had come here. Clearly Evie hadn’t had her phone and she wasn’t where Freya could magical Skype her. Thus the teleporting directly to her location.
Evie took Freya’s hand in hers and squeezed it. “I’m sorry, Freya.” It sounded trite given how Hayley had died, but Evie did mean it. She didn’t like to see Freya upset and feeling like she couldn’t do anything right. “Though, catalyst?” She wasn’t completely certain if Freya had mentioned that before or not. Neither of them really went into detail about their Dreams unless something like this came up and it needed to be said.
With everything Freya dealt with in regards to work, it usually did take a lot to get her to react in such a way as she had. It just came with the whole older sister thing, the one who had to fix everything. But sometimes….especially when it involved those she loved (or made her think of them if the situation was not exact)? Freya wasn’t nearly as rational as she tried to be. And because she’d been unable to reach her girlfriend through more conventional methods….rash decisions had been made.
Perhaps it was trite, but Freya returned the hand squeeze all the same. It was grounding. Especially with everything going on. As for the catalyst? She hadn’t as it was because she hadn’t even known about this particular prophecy until this exact dream.
“I’m not sure when the prophecy was made. It was a footnote really…. But the spell we used to split the Hollow into four and out of Hope? Each time any of my siblings are together, or near Hope….it brings us one step closer to this prophecy. Blood from the skies, snakes from the water, water on fire….and the last is death of the first born in all supernatural communities.” So Freya and Hope from the Dreams. And yet that was hardly the thing she was focused on. Sure, it was part of it. But everything else? That took more of her focus. “So while the Hollow may not be part of the prophecy, when we did the spell and the destruction that comes when my siblings are close to one another or Hope...those are the signs.”
And the last in the Dreams had been the water on fire. Right before death of the first born.
Evie definitely understood the eldest sibling thing given she herself was one. Sure, she was only a couple minutes older than her brother, but she was still older. And she was the one that always had to fix her brother’s messes because she didn’t want him to get hurt. Well, okay, sometimes he deserved to get hurt, but Evie tended to prefer being the one doing the hurting. Sibling’s right and all of that.
As Freya explained the catalyst, Evie nodded a bit. “So it’s sort of like the plagues of Egypt in the Bible. Something terrible happens any time your siblings get close to each other.” The whole death of the firstborn including Freya was not lost on Evie. It was clear why Freya had suddenly showed up here, given what had happened in her dream. She clearly had been worried that maybe something bad had happened to her and Freya needed to make sure that she was okay.
“Did any of your siblings show up at Hayley’s funeral?” Because it stood to reason that one or more of them, and Hope, would’ve shown up there regardless of knowing the consequences of being in close proximity.
Funny thing about the Dreams. Even knowing Hayley and Evie were different, in those moments of exhaustion and just waking up, Freya’s thoughts still turned to Evie. And she just..needed to know. There had been so much going on...so many emotions that she had just needed to see her girlfriend.
As for the question?
“Let’s see. Elijah doesn’t remember us and is the reason Hayley is dead, not to mention apparently the woman he now loves was bitten by Klaus and he’s with her though Marcel and Vincent are doing a spell to get his memory back.” So that answered that one. Which had more significance given his feelings for Hayley, “Kol and Rebekah are not. Klaus initially was, only as a projection. But he came to it at the end despite the risks to be there for Hope.”
Evie could understand the jumble of emotions upon waking. It was still a little odd, and more than funny to her, that she had an identical twin without actually being related to her. But even so, the initial confusion upon waking and needing to make sure Evie wasn’t injured or dead was more than understandable.
And, well, it did only deepen Evie’s feelings for Freya.
The implications of any of Freya’s siblings being at the funeral were huge. Though Elijah’s situation seemed to be the more tragic given his loss of memory. Not to mention dangerous if he didn’t remember his family, he could inadvertently show up where they were and bad things would happen because of the Hollow. “Even with the risks, being there for Hope was a good gesture on Klaus’ part. Perhaps inadvisable considering the risks, but family is family.”
And Freya had become part of Evie’s family.
Dangerous was one way of putting it. After all, they were dealing with prophecies and how if they were together and near Hope, they would bring about the end of the supernatural community in New Orleans, and Freya was on the list as they moved towards the end and death of the first born.
“It is…. Always and Forever.”
The vow which could destroy them all and yet it was who the Mikaelsons were. They had all taken it here in Orange County and it held true. But for Freya, Evie was part of it. Even when she struggled in the Dreams to see that it was possible to love both her family and Keelin. It was why she had needed to tell Evie when that Dream happened to make sure Freya didn’t pull anything like that. What they had was just too important.
Family was family, and even while she could appreciate Klaus being there for Hope, it was just another step towards fulfilling the prophecy. And the death of the firstborn thing. Evie already knew it would be too much to ask for the Dreams to not carry the Hollow or something close to it over into Orange County. The worst parts of the Dreams tended to become a reality in Orange County.
“But I would assume when Klaus appeared, it caused the next step in the prophecy to happen?”
Her hold of Freya’s hand tightened a little. As much as she didn’t want to think about Freya dying, it was obviously a possibility that it could happen in her Dreams. Which meant a potential for it happening here again. And Evie had no interest in losing Freya. But she also knew her girlfriend was smart and resourceful. She was undoubtedly working on a way to thwart the prophecy in the Dreams, which meant she’d no doubt do the same here.
Oh, Freya was planning on making a contingency plan. In what little free time she had, the witch was at the Magic Guild, trying to find ways to deal with the Hollow on the chance that it crossed over. Or now this new threat. She wasn’t going to let people die, not if she could help it.
“A storm and water on fire.”
Nothing like seeing Hayley’s funeral boat lit aflam by lightning and the water of the bayou go up in flames.
Returning the hand squeeze, the witch sighed.
“And then I woke up and panicked because of the haze and had to make sure you were okay because I love you and couldn’t just…”
Shrugging helplessly, Freya didn’t even seem to realize what it was she had just said. Too many emotions.
Even without the explanation of what exactly had led to Freya showing up here, Evie understood that whatever had happened was bad and worthy of concern upon waking. Though whatever else she may have responded with was put to a halt when she heard what exactly Freya said.
Three little words that carried so much weight. Three words that had once frightened Evie to her core, and she hadn’t wanted to give them voice, both in her Dreams and in this world because her and emotions didn’t always go well together. Evie prided herself on being rational and logical. Emotions, especially love, were irrational and illogical. But when she heard the words come from Freya, she wasn’t scared. She wasn’t about to leap out the window to avoid the conversation. ….again.
Quite the opposite, in fact.
“I love you, too,” she responded simply, looking at Freya.
It was only when Evie repeated the words that Freya realized what she had said. And yet it wasn’t like she could take it back. Nor did she want to. There were all the concerns and worries about the things that happened to those who became involved with a Mikaelson. But Hayley dying, thinking that Evie had been shot and died as well….
Life was too short.
So instead Freya just kissed her girlfriend because really, there was nothing else to say now. Nothing else mattered.
