Tyler had originally planned on staying with the other UCI coaches in Texas for a couple of days after the conference, but by the time the conference had ended, all he wanted was to come up to Caroline. They had only just gotten together, and he’d needed to leave so soon afterward that it was all he could think about, especially if she was kissing other guys while he was gone. Not that he could have blamed her - he had met Kyle himself and he wasn’t surprised that Caroline had mistaken the other man for him - but it still got under his skin a little. Caroline was his, and it bothered him that he hadn’t been there to claim her again after that.
He explained himself to the other coaches, and they seemed to understand, so as soon as the conference was over he booked a flight back to California. He tried to be extra quiet as he walked up Caroline’s doorstep so that he didn’t ruin the surprise, and then he rang the bell.
It had been a long few weeks for Caroline. Even with work and with spending more time with her friends. She had missed Tyler like crazy. She had just gotten him back when he had to leave for work. It was torture. But there were only a few days left. Soon she would have her boyfriend back. For now though? It was The Bachelorette and wine - drinking every time they kissed or the guys had a fight. She was just settling in on her couch, wine glass in hand, when the doorbell rang. Strange. She wasn’t expecting anyone.
Dressed in leggings and a t-shirt Caroline set down her wine glass and made her way over to the door. She froze the second she opened it. Tyler. What? How?
Forget processing what was going on. Tyler was here. Caroline’s body responded before her brain could fully comprehend what was going on, arms wrapped around her boyfriend, lips crashed into his.
Tyler couldn’t help but smile as Caroline threw herself into his arms, pulling her tightly against him, tangling his fingers in her hair. When they finally broke apart, he pulled back just a little so he could see her face, and grinned. “I take it you missed me,” he said. “Apparently I should leave more often.”
Caroline’s usual warm smile was about ten times brighter when the kiss broke. Tyler was finally back. The blonde didn’t think she could be any happier. However his comment caused her to give him a playful slap on his chest. “Don’t you dare,” she told him. “That was like the longest three weeks of my life.”
She moved her hand down to his, fingers wrapping around his as she pulled him inside, shutting the door behind him. “I thought you weren’t back till Friday?” She had a whole outfit planned out for his return and it was not leggings and a t-shit.
Now that they were away from prying eyes, Tyler couldn’t help himself. As soon as the latch clicked closed, he pushed her against the wall and kissed her deeply. He pinned the hand that she had taken up near her head, and wrapped his free arm around her waist. “Yeah, turns out I missed you too much,” he said, once he came up for air.
Caroline’s arms wrapped around Tyler. One hand around the back of his neck, the other resting on his bottom. Man, she had missed that ass. “You missed me?” she asked feigning innocence looking up at him, that smile still on her face. But then she moved her head closer, on her tip toes so her lips we practically level with his ear. “Or you missed having sex with me?”
“I don’t think those two things are mutually exclusive,” Tyler said, trailing kisses along her neck.
“Mmm,” Caroline replied both in agreement and because she was enjoying the feeling of Tyler’s lips on her neck. “Let’s take this upstairs.”
Tyler didn’t need to be told twice. He lifted Caroline up so that she could wrap her legs around his waist, and carried her up the stairs, falling onto the bed with her. He had missed her, all of her, and he had intentions of making this last. It was sometime later when Tyler was finally satisfied, and he had the feeling that Caroline was just as satisfied as he was. He wrapped an arm around her shoulders, and pulled her onto his bare chest.
“I’m glad to be back,” he said, kissing her on the top of her head.
“Mm,” Carolined agreed a satisfied smile on her face as she settled against Tyler’s chest, tilting her head so she could look up at him. God, he was so gorgeous. Caroline could probably stare at him all day. “No more leaving for three weeks,” she teased. Obviously she’d be understanding because work was important. But man three weeks was a very long time.
“So,” she began he hand running along Tyler’s chest. “How was Texas?”
“It was good, mostly,” Tyler said, twining his fingers in her hair. “I wished that you were there, but aside from that it was about what I expected. Learned a lot about coaching, met some of the family of one of my players.”
“You did?” Caroline replied. “That was nice of you.” It was cute, how Tyler really cared about his team and his players. Made Caroline love him even more. “Sleep with any hot Texans?” she teased throwing his joke from before he left right back at him.
“You know, I thought about it,” Tyler said, grinning a little. “But there wasn’t a single girl in Texas who could hold a candle to you. Looks like you’re the only one who got any action while I was gone.”
“Hey!” Caroline began to protest swatting him on the chest lightly at his ‘thought about it’ comment. But then he went on and she softened just a bit. “There’s not a single girl anywhere that can,” she clarified. Although there was a smile on her face she was slightly serious. Not that she thought that highly of herself, but she did need to know Tyler only saw and wanted her.
Caroline wrinkled her nose slightly. “Are you ever going to let me live that down?” She had realized the guy wasn’t Tyler like right away at least.
“Well, you’re not wrong,” Tyler said. Caroline was the love of his life, there was no way any girl anywhere in the world could ever compete with her. He’d been in love before, but never like this.
“Oh, probably,” he answered here. “I mean, we have forever. Maybe I’ll stop bring it up in a thousand years or so.”
Tyler may not have realized what he just said. But Caroline had heard it loud and clear. Her heart practically stopped, stomach did a little flip.
Forever.
He was planning on being with her forever.
Still she kept the mood light, eyes shining as she spoke. “You think we we’ll still be together in a thousand years?” she teased even if her stomach was still doing flips.
Tyler wet his lips, trying to figure out how to answer. With the dreams, he knew how quickly everything could fall apart. But this wasn’t the dreams. He didn’t want to make the same mistakes here, and he didn’t think Caroline would either.
“I hope so, at least,” he said after a while. “There’s no one else I’d want to spend a millennia with.”
“Me either,” Caroline replied beaming. Forever was a long time. But Tyler was the love of her life. Caroline knew she didn’t want to be with anyone else. Ever. “I love you.”
