WHO: Emma & Veronica
WHERE: Veronica's office
WHEN: Recently
WHAT: V has news to share that Emma asked for.
WARNINGS: PG
STATUS: Complete
Of course Veronica had looked into what had happened to Emma’s son right away. Free of charge. She didn’t charge her friends after all. Not to mention with everything with Emma’s dreams, seeing her kid in the dreams? Veronica could only imagine how hard that was for Emma. She wanted to help. Do what she could to make her friend feel better.
As soon as she had a decent amount of information Veronica called Emma to come into the office. Yeah, she could have met her for lunch or something, this wasn’t official business after all. But in case Emma wanted anything else looked up right away it was a good idea for Veronica to have her computer handy. Not to mention she was sure Emma might want some privacy at least.
She sat with the file on her desk, waiting for Emma to show up. A bottle of whiskey in her desk just in case Emma needed a drink to go with the information. Plus well, Veronica just liked to have alcohol handy. Though she did have to keep herself in check so she didn’t end up like her mother.
---
As her dreams had progressed Emma had just grown more and more worried about Henry, in both the dreams and how his life might’ve turned out in this reality. Truthfully, she didn’t know much about what happened after she gave up her child. She knew that there was already a family chosen to take him, she hadn’t asked about his name or where they were based. At the time, she just hadn’t wanted to know.
Now, it was just all she was thinking about.
That was what made Veronica, her profession and her skill all the more fortuitous. Although Emma had been nervous the whole trip to Veronica’s office, having called an uber rather than driving, just in case it wasn’t good news and she really needed to get drunk afterwards.
“Hey,” her nerves were probably obvious as she entered V’s office, tense and wound up. “How’re you doing?” Rather than just launch into things.
---
Small talk. Veronica could do that. She was taking Emma’s lead on this one. With her clients she usually just got right into it. That’s what they paid her for. She didn’t deal with what the news she dug up did to her clients. How they handled it. But Emma wasn’t a client, she was a friend. And Veronica planned on being there for her through every step of the process. At least for as much of it as Emma wanted her to be involved in.
“Same as always,” Veronica replied with a small smirk. “You?” she asked motioning for Emma to have a seat.
---
Same as always, because this was old hat for Veronica probably, dealing with people who needed information about something. Which was, ultimately, why Emma had asked her rather than going somewhere else, like to an adoption agency to see if she could track down files or any of the county information. Veronica made her living doing this.
“Honestly? I’m a ball of nerves.” The thing was, she’d had a good experience with the system here, in her dreams? Not so much. She’d been adopted and sent back and then bounced from place to place until she aged out and went at it on her own.
And that hadn’t gone so well.
“I feel like ripping the bandaid off might be the easiest way so… hit me with it?” Hopefully her son hadn’t ended up bouncing in and out of foster homes.
---
That was as to be expected. Also why Veronica figured privacy might be better for this. It wasn;t she had found out anything horrible. But still any information was a lot to handle. A fact Veronica was well aware from.
“Well,” Veronica said pulling the bottle of whiskey out of her desk drawer. “That’s what this is for. If you need it.” Also something Veronica didn’t do for her clients. That was a friends only gesture.
But on to the information. Veronica didn’t need to look in the file. She had it all memorized. Yet another thing she didn’t do for her clients. “His name is Henry,” Veronica began which made it easier to find him that he had the same name Emma had mentioned from her dreams. “Henry Mills. Parents are Garrett and Rachel Mills. They divorced a few years ago.” Veronica paused looking over at Emma before she went on.
---
For a blinding second, Emma was worried that Veronica would have terrible news about Henry, the offer of alcohol being there to numb her. And as Veronica got into things, Henry Mills, Emma almost panicked again.
Thankfully it wasn’t Regina, just a fluke that his adoptive parents were named Mills. “Divorced? Aw man,” it wasn’t too surprising, half of all marriages ended in divorce after all. “Do you know where they live?”
---
“San Diego,” Veronica replied. So not terribly far away. She slid the file closer to Emma. “Address is in there.” What Emma did with it was up to her. And if she needed the support Veronica would be there.
“Everything I found is in there,” she went on. Emma could look at it now or later. Either way it was hers now.
---
San Diego. Her son was in San Diego. That was, that was just a few hours away. She could drive there and back within a day. That was barely a day trip away.
Pulling the file towards her, Emma paused before opening it, “Do you… I mean do you know how he is?” Of course Veronica got information, but she wasn’t sure if that entailed checking anything. “Which parent does he live with? Do you think he’s happy? That he’s okay?”
---
“I didn’t find anything about him seeing a therapist,” Veronica offered. Though of course that didn’t necessarily mean that he was happy. But Veronica hadn’t seen anything to indicate that he wasn’t.
“He lives with his mom. His dad gets him every other weekend.” Which didn’t seem like enough but it was better than nothing. “I think he’s got a pretty average life.” Nothing over the top horrible. No curses either.
---
It was a shame that Henry’s parents hadn’t managed to go the distance, and Emma felt bad that he had to split his life like that. But hopefully it was a balance they maintained well, something that they didn’t struggle with.
“That’s good, that’s great.” She was very happy that he was doing well, that his parents seemed normal and every day, even if they were living separate lives. It could be something that worked for them.
“Thank you, for this, so much. I mean it.”
---
“No need to thank me,” Veronica assured. “It’s what friends are for.” The blonde didn’t make friends easily. But those she had she was fiercely loyal to and would do pretty much anything for. And Emma fell into that category. “If you need anything else,” Veronica said eyes on Emma. She didn’t just mean information, but also support for whatever Emma wanted to do with the information. “I’m here.”
---
Emma didn’t really count this as standard friends doing friends favours. It was a much bigger deal. And if Veronica wouldn’t accept thanks verbally, then Emma would just figure out another way to repay her. “I still appreciate it, a lot.” And the offer of further support.
“Since I think I’m going to be an emotional mess for the next hour or so, and I don’t want to subject you to that in any way,” because Emma wasn’t exactly good at showing vulnerability on the best of days either, “I think I should take this home to process.” At the least she could work out what to do with it, if she wanted to reach out to Henry’s parents, meet the kid.
If the kid even wanted to meet her in this reality. It wasn’t like he had an evil queen for a mother here.
“Can I take you out for drinks though? Just as a thank you that you have to accept?”
---
Veronica was like Emma. She didn’t like people to see her vulnerable either. Even Logan. So she understood that when Emma said that she didn’t want to subject Veronica to that, it really meant she wanted to be alone.
“All yours,” Veronica replied in reference to the tfile.
As for the drink? No thank you was necessary but Veronica could tell Emma wasn’t going to take no for an answer. “Well I guess I can’t really say no to that,” Veronica replied with a small smile. Besides it would be good to get drinks with Emma. She had a feeling once Emma had time to process she was going to want a drink or two anyway. And probably some company.
