Mia Dearden thinks your facial hair is silly ([info]speediest) wrote in [info]valarlogs,

Who: Liam Smith and Mia Dearden
What: Therapy
When: Wednesday morning
Where: Liam's office
Warnings: PG-13 for cursing, talk of drugs, prostitution, etc.

Mia had seen Liam for two sessions. They'd mainly been getting getting all the preliminary stuff out of the way. Where was she born, what symptoms she was having, all that stuff. She'd told him some about the dreams, though they'd glossed over a lot of it. She wasn't 'fixed', by any means, but the process was a lot less scary now that she'd had a session or two. She was starting to trust the guy.

She sat in the waiting room with her feet up on the table, leafing through a magazine.

Mia stood up, putting her magazine back down on the table. "Hey," she said as she followed him into the office. She sat down in the comfy chair, folding a leg beneath her. It was a much different pose than the relaxed 'I don't give a fuck' posture she'd taken in the waiting room.

"So I think I'm gonna be doing that dream study thing." She'd mentioned it very briefly at the end of their last session, but they hadn't really discussed it.

The Doctor actually sat in a different position than normally he would when with a patient, leaning back in the chair with his hands crossed over his stomach.

Why bother taking notes when your brain worked like this now?

"At the risk of sounding like a trope, how do you feel about that?" He didn't quite have a read on her actual opinion of it.

"Well, I met with the guy running it." She shrugged. "He's kinda.. I don't know. He tries really hard to be professional, but comes off really wooden and cold. I kinda snapped at him." By the end of it, she thought maybe they could get along, but she still wasn't really sure.

"But.. I don't know." Her voice got a little quieter. "It's not easy to talk about that stuff with people, especially when they act like robots. It's going to be hard, I know. But I feel like.. it might be good for me to talk. And it might actually help other people."

The Doctor nodded, rubbing a hand over his face. "The problem with research scientists is the disconnect most the time, it's true. But if he's putting his neck out there on something as fantastic as this, you might need to meet him halfway. Understand that he's not intending to come off like that, and he's likely in a good position to help."

He shrugged. "Granted, he might not wind up your best mate, but is that really why you're going?"

Mia shook her head. "No. And I think I told him that." In much more flippant terms than that, but still. "I don't expect him to become a completely different person, or anything." She was trying to meet him halfway. "I just want him to, like. Pretend to care. And not treat it like I'm talking about the weather."

She sighed. "I'm gonna be nervous either way, I think." 'Nervous' sounded better than 'terrified', which was probably closer to the truth.

He leaned forward, elbows on his knees.

"Of course. It's a natural reaction to something this major. This kind of trust. But detachment on a clinical level, particularly for someone trying what he's up to doesn't really mean he doesn't care. It's more about control, for him."

The Doctor shrugged. "And you have to ask yourself, is it easier to get mad at him and find a reason not to go than to open up honestly?"

She hmm'd. "Yeah," she admitted. "It is easier. And I'm probably doing the same thing. Trying to stay in control." And who could blame her? Considering some of the things from her dreams, and even in real life, control was crucial.

"Maybe that's the really scary thing. That they want to know everything from my dreams. 'Full disclosure'. I can't pick and choose what to hold back. And they don't have to do that. They're not telling me stuff."

The Doctor nodded. "Giving up control is frightening. I do understand that much."

Oh, did he understand.

He frowned a bit, looking at Mia. "What are they not telling you?"

"I just mean. They don't have to talk about their dreams, you know? It's this one-way 'Tell me everything', but they don't have to share." She shook her head. "Not that I really want to know theirs, I guess. And like. You haven't told me yours, but that doesn't really bother me. I don't know."

She sighed. "It's just hard. And I don't think they appreciate how hard it is."

The Doctor nodded. "A little compassion goes a long way. And if they're having dreams of their own, sure would help a bit."

Mia nodded. "Yeah. I don't know, maybe I should just give up on it." She didn't like the idea of quitting, though, and that distaste came through in her voice. She sighed, annoyed.

"Or. Do you think I should just ask them? I mean, I know they want to be professional and in control and stuff. Would it be way out of line?"

Shaking his head, the Doctor sat back in his chair again.

"I can't see a single harm in asking. Sure, I take things a bit less formal, me, but I can't expect that they wouldn't want people comfortable when they are asking quite a healthy bit of them. I think bringing it up next time would make loads of sense. You won't keep going if it bothers you."

Mia nodded. "I could tell the guy was pretty uncomfortable when we were talking." Mia had been calling him out quite a bit. "Is there. I mean. I don't want to even the playing field by making him as uncomfortable as I am." Well, she kind of did, but even she realized that wasn't the ideal solution. "Is there something I can do to let him feel like he's still in control even though I'm asking him that?"

"Well, if you don't, I think it's within your power to make sure that you could make it less so. It's possible he is dealing with very dark dreams as well. It's not as if these seem to often come in the flowery rainbows and sunshine variety."

Except those damn Ponies.

"And I think that the most important thing you could do is be up front with any discomfort, but deliberately take a step back from confrontation. That's in your power more than his, since the researcher is going to have to take the wheel, so to speak."

Mia nodded. "I guess there's no harm in asking." It still felt like there was, but that was probably her own discomfort coming through. But that was supposed to be a good thing, right? Pushing through that anxiety and talking about that stuff anyway.

She was probably spending too much time talking about the study, and maybe she was trying to avoid personal stuff. "He says he wants to prove the dreams aren't changing people, but.. I don't know. I think they are. Me, at least."

The Doctor snorted.

"Oh my, is that his theory? Well, he's entirely wrong then, isn't he? The dreams absolutely are." His focus was on helping people deal with the changes, not denying it.

How could he, when he had two hearts beating in his chest?
