Marguerite really hadn’t been shocked when Caroline had told her that she and Tyler had gotten back together. Honestly, it was only a matter of time. But between Caroline obviously wanting to spend time with Tyler before he left for a work thing and Marguerite having auditions to prepare for, it had made sense to wait until the weekend to have a much needed girls night.
So it was thus she was at the younger woman’s home, wine glass in hand. She had said that she would go into the Chauvelin of it all, the blackmail and crossing of lines and why she undoubtedly was more in line with Tyler than Caroline in all that had happened. But she did hope that there would be more to it than that.
Honestly, she probably could have just brought a copy of the stage version of the Dreams she’d been in. Let it all play out that way. No matter.
A lot had happened for Caroline over the past week. Getting back together with Tyler. Tyler leaving for Texas. Caroline thinking he was back and kissing a guy that looked exactly like him only to find out the guy was not Tyler. It was a whirlwind of emotions. Caroline was ready for a relaxing girls night with one of her best friends. And she hadn’t forgotten Marguerite’s comment about being the Tyler of her own situation. Caroline was dying to hear more details about that.
“So the lines you came close to crossing?” Caroline asked taking a sip of her wine.
Well that was one way to dive into the conversation. Though it made sense. It wasn’t that Marguerite would try to avoid it - having to do that confession on stage in front of people pretty much made it just a thing - but it also meant they wouldn’t get side tracked.
“Not so much came close to crossing and actually did cross.”
Sighing, Marguerite leaned back into the couch as she mulled over what to say. After all, a lot of the language she had used in the Dreams had been related to the time, which really had so much to do with everything.
“When I was in France, before I was ended up as an actress, I had been a prostitute. It was a way to provide for Armand and myself since we were alone. However, he never knew. I couldn’t let him know really.” After all, there hadn’t exactly been many options available to people like her and her brother during the time, “During the storming of the Bastille, I met a man - Chauvelin. He became my lover. Around that time I also began acting, but he knew my past. But I noticed how he grew obsessed… not just with me but the Revolution. The bloodlust. I believed in the ideals on which it had been founded. I had marched on Versailles. Around that time, Armand had been whipped for daring to send a love letter to the daughter of the Marquis de St. Cyr.” She still hated the man, and given the way their lives had ended up crossing over here….
Taking a sip of wine, Marguerite sighed.
“Anyway, time went on, I focused on acting, began to distance myself from la Revolution and her bloody guillotine. Then I met Percy and we were soon engaged despite him being an English aristocrat and me a French actress. When Chauvelin found out, he came to me. Told me to find out where the English, meaning Percy, had hidden away the Marquis de St. Cyr. If I didn’t, he would tell Percy about my past. Our union was already something that was breaking norms, I was terrified that it would be what ended us. Or that he would ask Armand, not wishing to offend me and then Armand learning the truth. Besides, he promised no harm would come to St. Cyr or his family.”
Shaking her head in disgust at herself, Marguerite continued.
“Well, I was terrified of losing Percy and was so used to doing whatever was necessary to survive. And I didn’t want to risk Armand learning the truth either. So I made the oh so foolish decision to trust Chauvelin when he said St. Cyr and his family would be safe, and feeling I had no choice because it was that or lose everything I had built for myself, I found out where they had been hidden and gave the information to Chauvelin.”
Scoffing bitterly, the actress took another drink of wine.
“Chauvelin lied, though. The man and his family were executed and so I have their blood on my hands because I did have a choice even if I felt I didn’t.. If I had known, I wouldn’t have given him the information but I had seen how consumed by the Revolution he had become, I should have known.”
Marguerite’s feelings on the matter were complex given her every complicated and negative feelings about St. Cyr and how that man and his family had constantly managed to upend her life. Always because of his elitist beliefs, let alone what had happened here.
“He came to me later, wanting my help again. Only instead of threatening to reveal my past to Percy, something which wouldn’t have worked by then given what was going on in our marriage at the time, he instead threatened Armand’s life should I not learn the identity of a man who was rescuing those from La Guillotine. So even though it was an impossible ask - no one knew the identity of the Scarlet Pimpernel - my brother’s life was in my hands, the brother I had done everything to raise and protect. And in doing so, nearly condemned Percy without even knowing it.”
That was a lot to take in. Caroline merely sipped her wine as Marguerite spoke, letting her tell her full story. By the time Marguerite was done Caroline had already finished her glass and poured herself another. “But you were being blackmailed,” Caroline finally said. Which she supposed was sort of like the sire bond. Marguerite didn’t have much of a choice after all. Not when her brother’s life was at stake. And Tyler well he didn’t have a choice even if he wanted to. But turning off his humanity was still something Tyler had done on his own. Klaus didn’t make him do that. Caroline understood his reasoning though it had just taken her some time to be okay with it.
“You didn’t exactly have a choice,” she went on taking another sip of her wine. “I mean I don’t think Percy would want anything happening to your brother. This Chauvelin guy sounds almost as bad as Klaus.” Because really, was anyone as bad as Klaus?
It was a lot. Marguerite knew that. And while she was pretty open about what had happened in her Dreams, that didn’t mean she also talked about them all too much. Especially as she hadn’t had any since she had died the year before. It only took five sets for it to stop.
“I certainly didn’t feel like I did. But the choice was there, especially the first time. Yes, I was lied to about what would have been done with the information, but the choice was still mine to find out where the English had hidden St. Cyr.”
She did smile slightly at the comment on Percy not wanting nothing to happen to Armand.
“He wouldn’t. When I met with the Pimpernel to tell him what Chauvelin wanted me to do, he did break character when he realized I was preparing to sail to France myself to save my brother. I was just too distraught and worried to put it together at that moment.”
As for Chauvelin nearly being as bad as Klaus?
“Almost.”
Marguerite may not talk about her dreams much, but it was helpful for Caroline to know of other situations that were similar to what she had literally just lived through. To hear about what someone in a situation somewhat similar to Tyler had done in his position. “Percy was the Pimpernel?” Caroline was pretty sure Marguerite had mentioned that before. Not to mention the name of his outreach. But even without that, with the way Marguerite was talking about the Pimpernel it was easy to deduce.
Which was why she had brought it up. It was all past now, but if it could help Caroline with whatever was troubling her? Then of course Marguerite was willing to talk about it. Besides, the story was out there five times over.
"He was. The set we both had he became the Pimpernel after learning of my betrayal but before he learned the truth. The other four, he had been the Pimpernel before we met."
“Percy hadn’t had multiple sets?” Caroline questioned. Though she supposed it made sense. Tyler was the only one from her dreams that seemed to have another set. But still if Marguerite had five, Caroline assumed Percy had at least had two.
“No. Which is quite rude if you ask me. At least Armand has the excuse of not being on the network currently. But really now. It would be quite unfair if I’m the only one to have to deal with multiple sets of Dreams.” Okay, Marguerite didn’t care that much, and it wasn’t like she wanted her husband to Dream of her dying after she had died in the real world. But it was still quite rude of him not to have any more dreams at this point and something she did like to tease him about as well.
“Well there’s always Tyler,” Caroline offered. “Not that he dreams the same as you.” At all. It was the same as her actually. “But he seems to be the only one from my dreams with multiple sets. And there are a few of us on the network.”
Marguerite nodded some. She did recall something about Tyler dreaming another set of Dreams as she had made comment on that but they never had really gone into how strange it could be. No matter, “True, there are a number of people who dream different sets. But still, it would be quite rude if I’m the only one to deal with all five of the ones I’ve dealt with. Because really now.”
Then again, she and Percy tended to be the types to make running commentary on the matter which really was all the fun of it.
“So that’s my tale of why I would be more like Tyler in crossing lines and doing things I don’t wish to. But how about you. Besides basking in love and reigniting your relationship, how have you been?”
“Five does seem like a lot.” Hell even one seemed like a lot. And from what she knew of Tyler’s second set there were a lot of differences too. She couldn’t imagine if there were three more versions of Mystic Falls out there… or Fells Church or whatever it was called in Tyler’s new dreams.
“So you’d forgive him too?” Caroline asked because that was something she had struggled with for awhile. He had done horrible things when his humanity was off. And Klaus didn’t force him to turn it off. But he turned it back on and he was her Tyler again. She couldn’t fight how much she loved him.
“I’ve been good. Kind of sucks that Tyler is going to be gone for like almost a month.” Especially when they just got back together. But his career was important. Caroline had been the one to encourage him to go for the coaching job in the first place. She wanted him to succeed. “Apparently he has a look-a-like. I met him at an event this weekend and may have thought he was Tyler at first.”
It was all about the situation. And in this one? Even with what Tyler had done with his humanity turned off?
“I would.” Because Tyler as Tyler was not abusive. He shouldn’t have turned his humanity off but it did make sense given the way things had all seemed to pile up that he got to that point. “After all, as you’ve said, it’s not like he would do so again.” And there was no more concern about the sire bond as well.
As Caroline answered the question, the actress nodded.
“That’s fair. The timing may be unfortunate, but just think of the reunion you two can have once he’s back.” Winking and then laughing some, Marguerite was about to take a sip of her wine when Caroline mentioned the fact Tyler had a look-a-like. She was pretty sure she had seen someone who wasn’t Tyler on the network but honestly it could be hard to keep up with that. Still, it didn’t take a rocket scientist to see how that particular run in could go, “Well that sounds potentially awkward.”
“Trust me,” Caroline said taking a sip of wine. “That’s like the only thing getting me through this,” she laughed herself before giving a small nod to Marguerite’s statement. “Yeah. It actually didn’t turn out to be quite so awkward. Once we got past the me kissing him part. I guess he’s used to people mistaking him for Tyler.” Apparently it happened a lot, which didn’t surprise Caroline too much. Tyler was pretty popular.
“What about you? How were your auditions?”
“See, so you have that to get you through until it can be reality.” Reunions could be quite intense and in a wonderful way depending on those involved and Marguerite had a feeling the reunion of Caroline and Tyler would be one such reunion. “At least it was easy to get over. And yes, Tyler does seem to know quite a few people so it would make sense he’s used to it.”
Taking a sip of her wine now, Marguerite nodded at the question.
“They went well. I’ll know tomorrow if I make call backs or not.” It wasn’t really a question, Marguerite was going to make them. But she also just assumed she would either.
“And more time with you,” Caroline reminded her with a warm smile. Not that she would completely abandon Marguerite when Tyler was back, she wasn’t like that. But he would definitely take up some of her time.
“Like you wouldn’t get a callback,” Caroline replied finishing off her wine and pouring another glass. “Though I fully expect a text once you hear.”
“Of course.” Oh, Marguerite didn’t expect Caroline to suddenly disappear on her now that Tyler was around but reignited relationships did take time and it wasn’t like the actress would begrudge Caroline that.
“You know me, I never like to be too confident on something, especially after the first round of auditions since you never know what a director might be looking for.” Though given it was Andrew, Marguerite would be shocked if she wasn’t cast, “And obviously I’ll text you to keep you informed. Both if I get a call back and if I get cast.”
“That’s what you have me for.” Though Caroline got where Marguerite was coming from. Not wanting to jinx things and all that. But she was beyond talented. Caroline would be shocked if she didn’t get some sort of part. “I totally expect all the updates,” Caroline added with a large smile. And she knew that Marguerite would give them to her too. But for now it was time to enjoy the rest of the evening with her friend.
