Co-owning a club wasn’t something Magnus had ever thought he’d end up doing, but since he and Alec had taken over ownership he’s found that he quite enjoyed it. Sure it wasn’t all fun and games all the time, but once they’d gotten the hang of running a business it had become less stressful and came with the perk of Magnus getting to spend most nights with Alec whether they were working or not.
During the day, Magnus could usually be found at the Magic Guild then at Pandemonium at night either in the office he shared with Alec, their apartment upstairs or somewhere on the dance floor. Tonight he was sitting at the bar, amusing himself by watching the way customers practically drooled over Alec. It felt like ages ago that Magnus had been jealous of the same thing, but that had been very early on in their relationship and now five years later, Magnus couldn’t have been more confident in their relationship so a few guys flirting with his husband was nothing.
He was sitting on the opposite end of the bar from where Alec was working so as he finished off his drink, he waited for the nearest bartender to become available before gesturing towards his glass.
Caleb hadn’t thought about tending bar as something he wanted to do for a job, but it was actually a lot of fun and didn’t completely interfere with his studies. Although some nights went a little later than he wanted, but he was doing his best to make sure he wasn’t taking an 8am class the next day. Pandemonium was a really great place to work, the bosses were awesome, and the clientele was actually really nice. He was sure that he if worked at a typical frat boy-type bar that he wouldn’t have as much fun. It didn’t hurt that he was found attractive by the guys who came in, so they usually left bigger tips in an attempt to flirt.
He knew Magnus was down at his end of the bar while Alec worked, so he was trying to do his best to prove he wasn’t a slouch at his job. He had finished up cleaning a few of the glasses on his end when he noticed Magnus gesturing towards his glass. He threw the rag over his shoulder and made his way over, “What can I get ya, boss? Another refill?” Magnus was a definite curiosity to him after learning that magic was real because even though he would become a warlock in his own dreams Caleb definitely wasn’t one here yet.
Magnus smiled as Caleb approached and he nodded, “A refill, please.” To say that Magnus was intrigued by the fact that Caleb dreamt about being a warlock was an understatement. From what his new bartender had written about his dreams on Valarnet, warlocks appeared to be very different in his dreams than in Magnus’ and that was the most intriguing part of it. Magnus knew that there were many different types of magic users: witches, wizards and magicians, to name a few, but he’d yet to meet another warlock until now. “Good night so far?”
Those yellow cat eyes were completely unnerving the first time Caleb had met Magnus, but he had gotten used to it over time. He really hoped something like that wouldn’t happen to him if his powers came over into this world. He grabbed Magnus’ drink when he approached and flashed him a smile. “Coming right up,” he replied as he turned around to fix the drink. He heard the question and spoke over his shoulder as he poured. “So far so good. Everyone’s been in a really good mood,” He turned back around to present the glass back, “And here you are.”
For a long time after his Demon mark had manifested, Magnus wore brown contacts until he was able to glamour them, but eventually he’d decided that was simply too much work and now most people simply assumed that his cat eyes were the contacts and that was fine with him, but he did know how unnerving they could be at first.
“That’s good. I always like to hear that our customers are in a good mood.” Magnus took the new drink and took a sip, “Because I’d rather not have to banish anyone tonight. If I’m going to use magic for something, I’d rather it be something fun,” He smirked and took another sip before focusing on Caleb, “Speaking of magic, have you had any bleed over yet?” He was very curious about how different Caleb’s magic would be from his own.
“Banishing someone is definitely not what I want to happen either. It puts a bit of damper on the mood for a good half hour or so before people start drinking again. It’s also not much fun to watch,” with or without magic it was still a bit awkward to watch someone stupid get banished out of the bar. It didn’t happen too often, thankfully, but enough to make an impression on Caleb, “And not yet. I’m a little surprised, but maybe it’s waiting to show up. I can feel a bit of a tingle of awareness sometimes. I’m also a little worried on if it would drain me here like it would in the Dreams when I use it.”
“And if there’s one thing I hate doing, it’s putting a damper on a party,” Throwing parties was one of Magnus’ favorite things to do so owning a club, which was basically like having a party every night had seemed like a no brainer when Alec had brought up the idea of buying the club, “I forget just how long I’d been dreaming before my magic crossover, but it was a good few months and now I can hardly remember what it was like without it.” Magnus lifted a hand and blue sparks danced around his ringed fingers. “If I use too much it can drain me too. That’s no fun at all.”
“You’re definitely in the right business if you don’t want to put a damper on a party. This place is usually one big party and I think that’s why everyone enjoys it so much,” Caleb pointed out with a chuckle. Magnus was quite skilled at putting the fun into the club. It had a whole different environment than he was used to at other clubs, which he appreciated, “Oh wow, at least I know I’m not a late magic bloomer.” He couldn’t help but give a chuckle at that comment, Danny wasn’t wrong when he said it was like a second puberty.
His eyes watched the blue sparks that appeared on Magnus’ fingers, “Is it just energy for you? In my dream world it actually drains my life force, so I could grow old and feeble quickly if I use too much power. It’s kind of scary and I’m still try to figure out how to find out without dying.”
“As far as I know.” Magnus said, picking up god glass and taking a sip, “The way I understand it, I do have a reserve of magic and I can use it up, but then I have to let it recharge.” Not having actually spent hundreds of years as a Warlock with Silent Brothers to explain it all to him, Magnus only knew what he absorbed from the dreams and while he’d been dreaming for quite awhile he felt that there were still some things that he was missing, “Magic being connected to your life force sounds awful. If you want to come by the Magic Guild and look through our books, feel free. We have many different books and it’s possible you could find something there that could help you.” After all, what other reason was the guild there for if not to help other Magic users?
“Ahhh, that sounds way better than mine. I would take a reserve that can be replenished any day,” Caleb commented dryly. He was kind of annoyed that his magic took away his life force and really didn’t want to accidentally turn into his father who misused his magic. It was really interesting to come to this place and meet a whole set of people that also did magic, but it was different from his own. Studying at the Magic Guild sounded like up his alley especially since he wanted to read through his own Book of Damnation, “I think I might have to do that. Maybe there’s a way to fix what my magic does with someone else’s magic. Where is the Guild located?”
“There’s a number of us that you could speak to about that. And we have a number of books including books from my own dream world.” Magnus had received his own Gray Book and the Book of the White before he and Alec had left the OC a year earlier and now they were safely secured at the Magic Guild, “Someone might be able to help you with that.” Whenever he could Magnus tried to help others.
Snapping his fingers, he produced a business card with the address of the Magic Guild and held it out to Caleb, “Come by whenever you want. I’m there during the day a lot of the time if you need anything.”
“Talks and books are definitely the best way to go about this,” Caleb agreed. When it came to studying he could definitely get to work on that. Caleb definitely felt like knowledge was power and he was fully intent on understanding all he could about the powers in his dream world before they started to come forth in the real world, “I appreciate you telling me about the Magic Guild.”
“Oh perfect, I will definitely make a stop over there as soon as I can. Thanks, Magnus. You’ve given me an awesome job and now you’re giving me a place to hopefully get some info on these weird powers,” Caleb gave him a grateful smile. Magnus was a pretty awesome boss to have.
