Anakin had thought of that question a thousand times a thousand since they'd started... this. But he didn't want to end this - this was the first thing he'd wanted since, well since his mother died, he'd lost his arm, and was discharged from the air force. He'd been merely afloat, unmoored, drifting wherever this universe was taking him for almost two years, and he now had something that made him smile again.
Nothing Padme said made him angry, it made him anxious: he didn't want her walk out of his life. If she did, he would respect her, but he would be miserable.
Without thinking, the moment she paused long enough, Anakin leaned in and kissed her.
"I don't want you to leave," he said when they finally stopped. But he stayed close.
"I want this- with you... But I don't want to ever hurt you." He knew the probability of maintaining that was impossible. People in relationships hurt each other and that's what apologies and forgiveness was for. But he meant something different. He didn't want the possible monster he could become to hurt Padme.
He paused stumbling over how to tell her what he was planning.
"I... may have found a way to... stop myself if I ever wake up that monster..." He didn't know how Padme would take his contingency plan, given the outcome would most likely be his death.
