Who: Peter Quill, Laurel Lance
When: Last night
Where: A questionable bar
What: Laurel's drunk and Peter goes to check on her
Rating/Warnings: None
Status: Complete
Laurel didn't normally do this, she didn't just go to a bar, get drunk, and let her hair down. However, dreaming of your best friend, who was a lover, in your dreams, dying to protect you and had died in real life, she earned this night out. Olivia was with Sara went to visit their Mom, so Laurel went out.
After a few shots of whiskey, avoiding the creepy guy who was trying to hit on her and buy her more drinks, Laurel went through her phone contacts to see if someone wanted to party with her, not wanting to see Oliver, she landed on Peter. Yes, Peter was fun and they could hang out, he was a good guy and perhaps she needed a friend. A few text were sent back and forth, that Laurel had just put money in a jukebox and was swaying to a song that was playing as she sipped a beer. She just wanted a night to forget everything that had been going on with her dreams, with her. When the song was finished, she went back to the bar and ordered another shot of whiskey, using her beer as the chaser.
Peter had been watching TV and trying to fix a radio when he’d received a series of random texts from Laurel. At first, he kind of laughed it off and answered back flippantly, but as the night went on, he started to get worried. Laurel was a good person, a genuinely good person, and this wasn’t typical behaviour for her. Often when she didn’t have Olivia, she didn’t get drunk...at least, he hoped she wasn’t any more than drunk.
After a while, he decided enough was enough.
When he parked his truck in front, he was glad he had put on some steel toe boots. This did not look like a great place to go to, and as he walked in the door, he stood up as tall as he could, surveying the scene, trying to find Laurel.
She was right where he hoped she wouldn’t be: sitting smack dab at the bar, several drinks around her. Sidling up next to her, he gave her a nudge with her hip. “Hey, you okay?”
When she felt the nudge, Laurel hand swung to the side, “You came!” Avoiding answering is she was okay, clearly, Laurel wasn’t. Leaning forward, “hey,” she shouted at the bartender, “two more beers here and another round of shots.” Her body swayed, so she saw back on the stool.
Turning back to Peter. “I’m so glad you came, drinks are on me tonight.” she said with a nod of her head, than blinked from the motion, she was little drunk, heading to be very drunk. “You can get whatever you’d like.” she slurred.
A rule of thumb was to always accept drinks, especially those provided by hot blondes. Somehow, Peter felt a little wrong this time though. Laurel was obviously not being her usual self, and that made him feel a bit wary. “Sure, thanks.” And even if both those beers were for her, he scooped one up quickly. At least then she wouldn’t be drinking both.
Taking a few tentative sips, he flickered his gaze at her. “So. What’s up. This is new …. Right?”
She shrugged, “not really, I have you know I was kind of partygirl back in the day,” she downed her beer, putting it on the table, “but then shit happens, had to grow up, and then Livvia “ She snorted, “but she’s not home so I can just be whatever I want to be,” she smiled at him, “you are so freaked out right now aren’t you?” A giggle slipped out of her mouth and then she snorted lightly, “I just needed a night of this,” she informed him,
The drinks were sat down and she took the shot downed it and chased it with her beer, ““got a problem with it?” she asked with a small grunt from the burn of the whiskey
Peter would never have taken Laurel for a ‘party girl’. That blew his mind. The slightly aggressive way she was talking to him also blew his mind. Was this really the same person? Holding his hands up, he gave a smirk. “Hey man, we all have needs sometimes, and letting loose is one of them…..but this is kind of a sketchy place for you. Why don’t we go back to your place? Drink your face off and then pass out in the comfort of your own bed, so you’re not dealing with all these asshole who are staring at you like a piece of meat?”
It hadn’t escaped his attention that she was a prime candidate for ‘bad things’. This was not the best place to be.
She arched a brow at him, “Are you scared?” she asked him with a smirk, “this place is as good as any,” she shrug her shoulder, “plus I just put money in the juk….” stopping she piped up, “I love this song,” she shifted off the stool, grabbing her beer, she wasn’t foolish to leave it alone.
“Let’s dance!” she nodded her head for him to join her, honestly she didn’t care if he did She was already on the floor, singing along as she danced to the beat.
He groaned audibly but naturally got up to join her. It wasn’t like he was going to let her be by herself, not when she was basically a fresh cut of meat to some of these jackasses. Positioning himself between her and the view of others, he danced half-heartedly, just trying to keep up with her. The alcohol seemed to have been doing its trick though because he did feel slightly mellow. He would stop drinking now though, since he had to drive and was going to be taking care of her tonight.
“You know what would be even funner than this? Sitting in our PJs, having some good ol’ fashioned friend cuddling. Wouldn’t that be great? I’ll even let you touch my butt.”
“I do that every night,” she groaned at him, “I don’t want to touch your butt, it’s cute and all, but no,” she shook her head, “I like you Peter, but I don’t liiiiiike you like that.” She smiled at him when the music change, “This is my song!” she declared as she started to dance more, singing loudly, she spun around, nearly tipping over.
Laughing she grabbed onto Peter’s arm, “loosen up, this is a night of freedom!”
Peter was still a bit wary, but he decided to give in. Whatever. He was sober enough, and she did look like she could use the break. She was a dedicated mother, a dedicated cop (and how funny that she was a cop and he was still comfortable with her) and right now, she wanted to dance.
“I’m offended you don’t want to touch my butt by the way,” he said between songs. “It’s rock hard now. I work out like nobody’s business. You could probably bounce quarters off of it. Just throwing it out there.”
Laurel laughed, good heartedly at his comment about his butt, she shrug her shoulder, “I doubt a bounce quarters off it,” she would offer to test that theory, but she honestly just viewed him as a friend, a close one at that, Laurel hadn’t had many male friends since Tommy passed away.
“Come on, more drinks!” she called out as she headed back to the bar, the thought of Tommy, him dying in the world and her dream word, left a pang within her heart. Tonight she wanted to drink it away, she wanted to drink the sorrow of her dad not being here for her like he was in her dreams, just everything between her and Oliver. Laurel just needed to drink it all away.
Her laughter was infectious and Peter found himself following along with everything but the drinks. He had no interest in getting drunk tonight, he’d be happy to just watching Laurel, making sure she was okay and not getting herself into too much trouble.
“Are you sure you’re okay?,” he asked her later on. “I mean, hey, you’re shaking your groove thing, having a blast which is awesome. You deserve the break. I’m just throwing it out there that you can talk to me about anything. I’m pretty non-judgemental and I’m a dude, so I’m totally going to forget it all later.” He gave her a wink to show she was joking.
“I killed someone,” she told him looking at him, “not in real life,” she shrug, “But I loved him, here and in my dreams. He’s dead here, now he’s dead in my dreams.” she looked at him, than turned to “Beer and whiskey shot,” she called out ot the bartender, “He was my best friend, here and we were actually a couple for a bit in my dreams.”
When the shot was put in front of her, she downed it, “at the end...after we broke up, he came to rescue me, because… I was dumb and I got him killed.”
Well.
That wasn’t what Peter expected at all, and he stared at her in a stunned silence.
“Okay ...but you didn’t physically kill him. Just shitty circumstances. You can’t own that kind of guilt, girl. It’ll eat you up inside.” And Peter knew. He always suspected his grandfather’s heart problems were directly related to Peter’s behaviour ...and then when the old man died, it made Peter even more convinced of it. “You didn’t mean to be taken, and you didn’t mean for him to rescue you, and you definitely didn’t mean for him to die.”
“I wasn’t taken, I was trapped under a ceiling, even came back with the wounds, I’m fine.” she grabbed the beer that was sitting in front of her, “I’m home alone till Sara and my babygirl gets home, so I’m not thinking about it,” She lifted the beer up to show him how she was dealing with it and the took a gulp.
“I want to feel nothing, Peter,” she told him, “so tonight I will.”
He almost said that she needed a stronger drug do that like, like heroin, but he didn’t think that kind of joke would be appropriate.
Plus, he was worried she’d take him seriously and he wasn’t going to mess with those hard drugs. No thanks. They weren’t fun.
Instead, he simply nodded and watched her drink her beer. “You do you, girl. Just know that you’re not a bad person.”
She looked at him, put her drink down, “Take me home, Peter.” she said softly, this was foolish and she had done what she wanted to do and it wasn’t working. She moved to pull her wallet out and shifted off the stoll, tittering as she placed a hand on the bar.
“Whoa….” she breathed the liquor and beer was finally setting in.
Peter hesitated a bit before stepping up closer and holding her arm. “I’ll pay. Just get your coat on, and let’s go.” The bartender came up, and Peter couldn’t help but be slightly impressed at the bar tab. He really hadn’t thought such a little person could drink so much, but hey -- it happens.
Putting a steady hand on the small of her back, he tried his best to guide her out and into his truck. He reminded himself to pick up some Gatorade -- she’d need to rehydrate.
