It had been a long day between classes and Hayley having to control her urges, like listening to all the heartbeats, the new smells, she was still getting used to it not being a human. It was the end of the night, Peter was working on a few odds and ends and she had ordered pizza for dinner, which just arrived. Elijah was providing her blood and suggested to take up drinking, more than wine, to help cut the urges.
With her dreams being dark and waking up, anger bubbling within her, she had bottles hid everywhere, even in her office. However tonight she had a six pack of beer, she had excused herself earlier to drown a blood bag, get the beer, and met the delivery guy at the door for the pizzas.
"Peter," she called out as she locked the door and moved to the receptionist desk, setting the pizza down, "dinner." She moved behind the desk, with ease lifted a chair to move to the other side for her could sit if he wanted.
Peter didn’t hear Hayley. His headphones were on, twentyonepilots singing about heathens in his ears, and it wasn’t until he finished up in the storage room that he took them off. It was pretty quiet now though, and he wondered if Hayley had forgotten about him.
Until he smelled the pizza.
His stomach grumbled loudly, reminding him that he’d only had a sub earlier that day and hadn’t eaten anything else. It wasn’t like it was a busy day -- it was just that once he started on a project, he liked to finish it, especially when he was given free reign like at the studio.
Tucking his earbuds and phone into his back pocket, he walked over to where Hayley was, rubbing his hands in glee. “Aw yeah, pizza. You’re the best, Hayley girl,” he said grinning. Taking a slice, he sat down in the spare chair and stretched his legs out in front of him. “The shelving is all up now, and I think it’s a better use of the space than the clutter that was there before,” he said in reference to the storage room. “I don’t know where you want everything, but maybe after this, I can help you put it back together.”
“It’s fine,” she waved a hand at his dismissively, “you can leave after the clean up, I’ll set it all up.” She shifted to push a beer bottle in his direction, “you’ve worked hard, no need to do more than what you’re meant to.” With ease or much thought, she twisted the cap off her own beer and down half of it . “I need something to do at nights since I haven’t been sleeping much,” she told him.
Hayley was avoiding her dreams, her moods were swifting, and the sooner she got Peter out of her place, the sooner she could relax more without the heartbeat enticing her like it was now. Sighing she leaned back in the char, sipping on her half of beer, but then lean forward to get a slice of the pizza as well, “thanks for all your help, by the way.”
Peter gave a shrug as he chewed his pizza. “Don’t matter.” It wasn’t like he had any plans really. Both Evie and Katherine texted him, not the other way around, and he was okay with that. Peter didn’t want to go anywhere he wasn’t wanted, so getting that text? It proved he had a right to be there. At least in his mind.
“And no problem. I’m always happy to help, you know that. I may not like yoga too much, but I like you so.” He’d tried a class or two, but hadn’t loved it so he’d stopped. With Nine’s brutal workout regimen (he was convinced the younger man was a machine), it was all the exercise he needed right now. “How come you’re not sleeping much? Dreams?”
“They are the worst,” she replied instantly after swallowing her bite of the pizza. “So I get a bunch of innocents people killed, get knocked up by the man who killed them, than witches kidnapped me to hold me hostage, but he didn’t care about me till his brother convinced him to care about the baby.”
Hayley downed the rest of her beer, took a bite and grab another. “So in dreamland, I’m a mother, I have a child, who the witches wanted to kill, than they killed me after I gave birth.” She open the beer bottle with easy and took another gulp, “slit my throat.” Pointing her bottle at him, “that’s not even the worse thing.”
Peter gave a little choke. “What do you mean that’s not even the worst part?!” He looked at her in shock. Whenever other people talked about their dreams, all he could think was ‘daaaamn’. Sure, he had somehow ended up in space and was essentially a criminal anti-hero dashing type figure. Was that bad? Maybe, but at least no one had killed him or made him have a kid, or anything like that.
Frick.
“Dude…”
“I know!” she breathed out, “it’s fucked up, really fucked up, cause I woke back up, I did die, but with Hope sharing blood with me, I became a hybrid!” Hayley paused, she didn’t mentioned she was a werewolf, did she? Opps! “Oh, yeah, I’m a werewolf or was, I’m a hybrid, part vamp and were.”
She finished her beer, finished the slice of pizza, “I drink blood down and picked up drinking, it cuts down on the urges, which aren’t so bad, but in my dreams I went on a killing spree of the bitches who want to hurt my baby and woke up in blood, I meant covered, it was nasty and I’m such a bitch in my dreams, I hate myself.”
Peter didn’t quite know what to say. She was obviously annoyed by this all, but at the end of the day, it didn’t change anything -- she was Hayley, the first person that ever gave him a chance. He wasn’t about to give that up.
“So does all that happen here too? Because you’re eating pizza and beer, and TV taught me that vampires can’t eat regular food.”
Looking at him her eyes yellowed and she hissed at him, but then she went back to normal, “I’m a hybrid, I can eat anything, but blood has to be a part of the diet as well.” She grabbed another slice, “I’m super fast now, I am stronger, I can turn into a wolf anytime I want and no full moons don’t affect me like it would others.”
Hayley looked over at him, “Only you and Wanda know some of the things, it’s just weird and it freaks me out. Especially cause I’m so hateful.”
“You’re not hateful,” Peter said, shaking his head. “I mean, that hiss was hot and all, but I did pee a little in my pants. So I guess that means you can be scary. But not hateful.” He grinned and took another slice of pizza. “I don’t blame you for being freaked out though,” Peter added after a moment. “That’s like ..a lot to deal with. I can’t even imagine how you’re handling, and those dreams …”
“Do you have other people in your ….dream universe to help you out?” At least Peter had Yondu. That helped. A lot.
Hayley found herself laughing at him, but it was a lot to deal with and she sighed as she took another bite. “Elijah is from my dreams, he’s helped me out a lot, my friend high school, there’s a few people here, some I haven’t even met yet in my dreams.” She shrug a shoulder as she ate her slice, “Enough about me! “
“How are you doing with your dreams?” she asked as she reached for beer, “I’m guessing vampire or werewolves are in your dream world?”
“No...they’re not….and my dreams are weird. I mean, I hear from everyone else how they’re like dreaming in order? I just ...dream. Sometimes they’re from the beginning. Sometimes they’re in the middle. Or the end. I know I’m older in some, younger in others. I have friends in some, I’m alone in others. It’s weird.” He shrugged.
“Basically I’m from space. I don’t know how I got into space, all I know is I am a kick-ass space pirate who is a guardian of the motherfuckin’ galaxy.” He grinned. “I’ve gotten out of the most hardcore prisons, I’ve kicked the ass of some of the scariest dudes ever.” Was he preening a little? Just a little. “And in one I died, but hey, we can’t win them all right?”
For a moment, she thought he was joking, but the way he spoke, the grin on his face was pride, she made an impressed face, “too bad I’m not in space,” she told him with a chuckle and than sighed softly, “sounds like fun,, your dream, I guess cheers to us since we both died!”
Laughing slightly she grabbed more pizza and leaned back as she looked at him, smiling softly, “so cheers to not staying dead?”
Peter burst into laughter. “Hell yeah, I’ll cheers to that.” He raised both his half-eaten slice and his beer in the air. “Cheers, Hayley. We’re alive, we’re still alive, and we’ll stay alive until we die. What more could a person ask for?” He took a bite and then chewed quickly to add: “Oh, and for good friends. You rock, by the way. I mean, don’t matter how crazy your dreams get. YOU, this you? Rocks. So just stick with that, and fuck the haters, yo.”
Hayley laughed for the first time in weeks and nodded her head, “I will try,” she told him with a nod of her head as she munched on her pizza. Her phone went off and she moved to check it, “It’s late,” she told Peter, “finish up and go home,” Hayley told him as she put her phone down.
Glancing at his phone, he realized she was right -- it was late. Later than he thought it would be. Gulping down the rest of his slice, he stood up and gave her a little salute. “Aye aye, boss lady.” Peter wiped his hands on his jeans, adding to the various stains and marks on them. Work pants were good for everything, napkins included. “And just so you know,” he added, “I fully expect my phone to be filled with memes tomorrow. You’ve been warned.”
He gave her a wink and headed back to his work area to get his toolkit. Now that this job was done, back to Stark’s he went.
