Who: Kara Danvers & Padmé Amidala When: Tuesday, May 21st. Afternoon Where: Cafe What: Supergirl stops an attempted robbery Rating/Warnings: Family Friendly Status: Complete
So much had happened in Kara’s most recent dream and considering she’s woken up late, she hadn’t had much time to really process it all. Upon arriving at work, at Stark Industries, she’d had to immediately deal with a few PR problems that had arisen recently then had had to attend a meeting and force her mind to focus there instead of wandering to replays of her and Clark finally working together. Getting the chance to fight crime alongside Superman had been exhilarating.
Luckily, by the time the meeting let out, it was lunch time and Kara headed down to a cafe a few blocks from Stark where she was able to go over everything from Clark, to her new boss at CatCo to finding out the identity of the mysterious occupant of the pod.
Reaching the cafe, Kara went inside and got in line then pulled out her cell phone to send Alex a quick text.
For someone that didn’t like coffee, Padme tended to spent a lot of time at cafes. To be fair, she had a sweet tooth and this place had a cheesecake to die for and also ...well, did she really have to explain it? Nope. Standing behind a young blonde in line, Padme also whipped out her phone and started reviewing her schedule for the week. It’d already changed a few times, considering she was suddenly asked to be at a few wedding dress fittings (ugh) for one bride who had no less than four dress changes for her wedding. Padme had tried to talk the bride out of it, explaining that every change took at least a half hour to an hour, meaning the bride would be spending half her wedding getting ready.
She hadn’t been successful in swaying the bride though, which is why dessert therapy was needed.
Hey -- it wasn’t HER dress fittings. She could afford a few slices of cake. And then horror upon horror: she noticed that someone ahead of her was getting the last piece. “Oh man, if there’s no cheesecake left, I will never get through this day,” she said to herself, not realizing how loud she was talking.
Kara couldn’t help but turn towards the woman behind her as she spoke then turned back towards the case that held the various food items. Lowering her glasses slightly, she squinted her eyes as she used her x-ray vision to scan the area and spotted another cheesecake in a spot hidden from customers. Fixing her glasses, she glanced back towards the other woman, “I’m sure they have more. I mean it’s still early. I doubt they wouldn’t make enough to last the whole day.”
Padmé blushed suddenly, startled that she had spoken out loud. “Oh, sorry! Inside thoughts were supposed to be inside, but thank you very much for that. I need the positive reinforcement that dessert for breakfast is still a possibility in my life.” She smoothed her hair and put her phone in her pocket. “Sweet beats savoury every time. Give me cake over a bagel any day of the week.”
“Oh trust me, you’re not alone when it comes to accidently speaking your inside thoughts out loud.” Kara had done just that on many occasions. “I think it happens to people a lot more often than you’d think.” She smiled and nodded in agreement at the other woman’s statement, “Oh, I totally agree. My sister and I bake all the time for just that reason.”
“I never learned to bake,” Padmé confessed. “It just seems so complicated, what with all the exact measurements, and science, and all that ...stuff.” It also hadn’t helped that their cook at home was from France, and made the most beautiful pastries. How was Padmé supposed to compare to that? And on top of it all, she was never really allowed in the kitchen. The fact that she knew how to cook was a mystery to her. “Hence,” she continued, “why I’m here, waiting for cake.”
“It’s one of the things I’m grateful that our mother taught us. So we can bake whenever we’re bored,” Kara and Alex had spent many nights just baking and goofing off and while they sometimes made more than they needed for just the two of them, there was always someone that they could share with in the end. “I’ve never tried to make cheesecake though. It’s one of those things I want to make, but it’s also the one thing that never comes out the same as it does in a bakery.” She noticed that the line had moved up so she took a step forward, two people still ahead of them.
Padmé stepped ahead as well. The conversation was light enough to keep her talking, and besides, it was better than looking at her phone. “Even watching baking shows is stressful for me. There’s so much equipment and pieces that I don’t understand. I mean, at least when you’re cooking, there’s a pot, a pan and assorted cutlery. Easy. But with baking?” She ticked items off her fingers. “There’s mixers, and bowls, and spatula things, and baking sheets and springform pans…” She threw her hands up and smiled. “It’s just mind-boggling.”
Kara laughed lightly and nodded, “Yeah, there can be a lot of pieces when it come to baking. And you wouldn’t think it, but there’s a lot that can go wrong.” There had been more than one occasion where Kara or Alex had forgotten to set a timer and ended up with a pan of very burnt brownies or cupcakes. There was even one time they had to throw away a pan cause it was simply too hard to get the burnt bits out completely.
Kara was about to tell the other woman about that time in particular when the man at the head of the line spoke to the barista. It wasn’t loud enough for most of the people in the cafe to hear, but Kara had super hearing so she heard it as if she was standing next to him and it was likely that anyone else in line would have heard him too.
“Give me all the money in the register and no one gets hurt.” Stepping slightly to the side of the woman in front of her, Kara lowered her glasses slightly and used her x-ray vision quickly, on the man, and sure enough, he had a gun in his pocket. She knew she had to do something to stop this. It took Padmé a few seconds to realize what was happening ahead of her, and when she finally did, she couldn’t help but gasp outloud. “Oh my god,” she said under her breath, her eyes wide open at the apparent robbery occuring right in front of her. She’d never been in this kind of situation before. Her first thoughts were that she wished Anakin was there. He was such a rock in these kinds of things, anything unexpected and unplanned seemed to be what he thrived on.
Glancing over her shoulder, she realized that apart from those in line, no one quite knew what was happening, although she could see the panic slowly spreading around as people realized what was going on. The poor barista seemed to be doing what she could, but even Padmé could see how badly the girl was shaking and struggling to open the register.
Who robbed a bakery, Padmé wondered to herself. There had to be more lucrative businesses, but the robber didn’t seem to be the most stable. He was twitching a little, and was shaking too.
Kara could also tell that the would be robber wasn’t completely in control. His heartbeat was erratic and she noticed he was beginning to sweat. Glancing around quickly, she took a step back, bumping Padme slightly before she moved behind her just enough to be out of the other woman’s line of vision. “Don’t panic. It’ll be okay.” Without giving Padme a chance to turn or respond, Kara ran, using super speed, into the back and out through the back door, returning seconds later through the front in full Supergirl costume, her blond waves loose and her cape unfurling behind her.
“Sir, put down the gun and step away from the barista.” The man turned towards her, clearly taken off guard by the sight of a girl in a leotard and cape coming towards him. Kara took that opportunity to use her heat vision, pin pointing on the gun to hear it just enough so he’d drop it.
The other woman’s words barely registered with Padme, who had taken to huddling in with the group. At the end of the day, humans were barely more than animals and instinct was such that there was safety in numbers. Pressed against an elderly woman, she watched the scene unfold.
And then there was a superhero. Resplendent in spandex (Padme wondered idly where one would get such a costume), the young hero made her demands clear. If she was facing a rational person, Padme was sure the gunman would have acquiesced, sat down maybe and calmly waited for the police.
Or not attempted to rob a bakery in the first place.
Instead, she could see the jitters in the man’s body and she couldn’t help herself. “Watch out!,” she cried, a hand outstretched in emphasis. The man was going to do something, she knew it.
The man, being both nervous and clearly not too bright reached for the gun he’d just dropped only to end up burning his hand since it was still hot from Kara’s heat vision.
Using her super speed, Kara now closed the distance between herself and the would be robber “That really wasn’t very smart.” As she grabbed both of his arms and held them behind his body, she heard the distant sounds of police sirens. Someone must have called the police, which in Kara’s opinion was good because she really had no idea what she was going to do with the guy otherwise.
Within moments two police officers walked in, hands on their guns, but relaxed when they saw that Kara had apprehended the man. “Thanks for coming, Officers. I think this man needs a trip downtown.” It was super cheesy, but this wasn’t something she did often unlike in the dreams.
Considering the crazy things that tended to happen in the OC the police officers were barely phased by the scene in front of them and simply began cuffing the man while two other officers, who had just arrived started questioning some of the patrons.
It was over before it began, and Padme didn’t know what to do. An officer was asking her questions, and she answered them as methodically as she could, trying her best to say what she could while still trying to process the whole thing. It had felt like an eternity but of course, it was only a few minutes.
And that superhero...she turned her head quickly, scanning the bakery for her but she didn’t see her. She did see the blonde that was in line with her though, looking calm, cool and collected. Basically the opposite of Padme. “That was crazy! I’ve never been in this situation before,” she confessed to the younger girl. “I never wanted to, really...are you okay??”
While the police questioned the patrons inside, Kara had gone outside with another and attempted robber to make sure he ended up in the back of the cop car. After telling the police officer that they could always count on Supergirl, she took to the skies, but only went as far as the back door of the cafe and slipped back in, now back in her civilian clothes and glasses.
“Yeah. Yeah, I’m okay.” Kara said, adjusting her glasses in an attempt to make it seem like she was more nervous than she actually was, “Are you? I’ve never seen a real gun before. I was so scared that something awful was going to happen.” It really was surprising that no one recognized her just because of her glasses and the fact that now her hair was up where it was down a few minutes earlier. “I’m glad that girl showed up. It’s crazy that there are legit superheros around now, right?”
“I know!” Padmé’s heart was still racing, trying to figure out what happened. “Can you imagine? I mean, I always thought that was some sort of fiction thing but hey, stranger things have happened. “ She peered out the window, before glancing back at the younger girl. Kara seemed nervous. “Are you okay? Do you need a ride or me to walk you to your car or something?”
“Oh no, I’m fine.” While trying to appear frazzled apparently Kara had done a much better job than she’d expected, “Still just a little shaken up, but I’ll be fine. Thanks.” She smiled in an attempt to show the other woman that she was okay.
A few moments later the remaining police left and things began to go back to normal inside the cafe, “I should probably be going. I’m not feeling much like coffee now, but you should get your cheesecake.” Kara headed towards the door, her smile becoming a little more genuine as she reached the door, happy that she had been able to thwart an attempted robbery.
